ZWANEN EN DE LAATSTE ROZEN? - SWANS AND LAST ROSES?

A whole day at home, that does not happen often nowadays, but perfect to spend all day gardening. Almost do not know where to start so much to do before real wet and cold days are coming.  Although temperatures are back to normal for November, it is fine weather for outdoor work.
I start in front of the house, cut wheelbarrows full of ivy, old hydrangea branches and so on.  I am suddenly startled by a spectacular sound that rages in the water, it's mom and dad swan with their child making a deafening noise and wing flapping to rise slowly and land softly after a hundred meters.
I continue gardening, moments later they approach. Swimming and floating quietly, they look curious what I'm doing, but of course someone else has already seen them too.......

Snarf welcomes them barking loud, the swans blow back.

Rosa 'Mary Rose'

 Rosa 'Lavender Dream'

In the afternoon I take pictures of some last flowering roses and then I pick them off.

 Rosa 'Queen Elisabeth'

 Rosa 'Etoile de Hollande'

 Rosa 'Ferdinand Prichard'

 Rosa 'Paul's Scarlet'

In the kitchen I fill various vases with roses.

 Rosa 'Tchaikovsky'

The rose 'Tchaikovksy' has a firm long flowering branch, I have a moment of doubt and cut it off.....

We have 'Tchaikovski' since last summer and it appears to be an asset to the garden.

Rosa 'Pat Austin'

 Rosa 'Glamis C astle'

 Rosa 'Kent'

Bulb glasses are also very useful for flowers and decoration.

Still, remains for me to thank you all for the astonishing number of comments on my post about the hydrangeas, I really enjoyed it and shall do my best to react as much as possible on your news.

  1. Janneke, you have so many beautiful roses and your last bouquet is pretty and no doubt wonderfully fragrant.
Snarf must view the swans as intruders and not the elegant creatures they are, curious too as you have said.
My garden chores have been completed for winter for a few weeks now and very few flowers are left for colour.

  3. The roses are so lovely and make such beautiful bouquets. Ours are all but gone as we had a hard freeze this week. The swans are beautiful. I love swans. How lucky to have them so close by. I'd be visiting them often and taking photos. We rareley see swans here; perhaps if they migrate from Canada or Alaska with the Canada geese we are lucky to see them all winter long. Sounds like you do a lot of work getting the garden cleaned up for winter. We still have to do some clean up and I would like to plant some spring bulbs. Have a great weekend.

  6. Dear Janneke, how wonderful that you have water directly adjacent to your property and the swans could come up so close.
Your roses have been still so beautiful and you have put together quite a wonderful collection. I haven't heard about 'Tchaikovsky' up to now, but it certainly has a wonderful subtle coloration.
I agree with you, that the vases made for forcing bulbs are ideal for arranging rose bouquets as well. I especially love your green and olive colored vases and would just wish, that they would be available in those colors in the US, too.
The arrangement in the last photo is my favorite. It is so harmonious in terms of the color choice and the vase fits it perfectly. Thanks for this wonderful post!
    Warm regards,
    Christina

  14. I remember when years ago our Doberman was running through the Queen's Park (Holyrood Palance) here in Edinburgh and he spotted the swans in the Loch. I thought we had lost them as the swans rounded on him as he ran into the water. I don't know who had the biggest fright, the dog or me. I really thought those swans were going to kill him.
Good to read you have found time to get stuck into the garden Janneke, it's still warm enough here to get outdoors too.
    As usual, perfect vases.

  20. How lovely to have swans at the bottom of your garden - aren't. You worried that they might attack Snarf. I can't believe that you still have so many roses in flower - wow. Enjoy your work in the garden - from the size of it I guess it will take you some time. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  25. So fun to see Snarf guarding his home from the swans. How lovely your roses are even in November. I enjoyed seeing their beauty. Your lacy mat under the vase of roses reminded me of my mother and grandmother, as they made many of those. I have a few. Alas, I never learned to make them myself.

Your hydrangeas in the previous post, amazing! No wonder you got so many comments.

  27. Those final roses of the year are always special. I am surprised that Snarf did not jump in for a swim with the swans. He seems to love the water. Perhaps it is just as well. I am sure the swans would not have been pleased with a dog in their territory.

  32. I liked how you use the bulb glasses, Janneke. I should to put some flowers as well until my bulbs wait for their forcing time. Lovely swan family, their kid is yet 'ugly duckling' but soon he'll be beautiful white swan.
The rose Tchaikovsky is very pretty, love this soft color.
