VOSSEN ROND HET HUIS - FOXES ROUND THE HOUSE

Late August we visited the Countryfair on the Estate of Mariënwaerdt in Beesd. I went there with a mission.  After we had seen the demonstrations of birds of prey, slip hunting with horses and dogs, we took a look at the stands and there I found where I was looking for:  two fox skins with the same colour, mission accomplished!

I had them already for a week at home, when I discovered they were smelling a bit mustly, they needed a good airing. Then I got the idea to put them on the old airer I found last year on the attic of my parents´ house. I recognized the oak airer of my childhood and took it with me home.  After it has been almost a year in the basement, I painted it in duckegg blue with Annie Sloan paint.  Now the fox skins are airing on it.

Now the reason of buying fox skins. My favorite English easy-chair showed already for some time signs of wear on the arms of the chair.  I sewed dark blue covers for camouflaging but I was not satisfied at all. Then I came on the idea of  fur skins which I found on the countryfair of Mariënwaerdt.

Look at the ears, the nose and the whiskers.

And do you see who is behind the chair?  That's his secret hiding place.

In one or another way I have a fondness of foxes.  This fox is nice and warm around your neck (haha), I found it on a flea market lying in an old pan. I could not leave him there.
The old suitcase underneath accompanied my father in law a long time ago when he was as a soldier in the former Dutch East Indies.

Perhaps many of you don't like having dead foxes in the house, but I can tell you I also like them more alive, despite the havoc they cause sometimes in chicken coops in our environment.

This old reproduction of the painting 'Hard Pressed'(Any Port in a Storm/Late for School), painted by Arthur J. Elsley in 1898 I saw once in an antique shop in Gouda. My husband bought it as a surprise. The original oil on canvas is in the Dallas Museum of Art, this one for some years now in our library and I still love the picture.

To continue the atmosphere of old stuff a little, I picked some flowers in brownish tones, autumn is arriving slowly but sure.  On the table flea market treasures as the root cloth and snails transferware. Together with a few found bones, an antique oil lamp from my grandmother and a number of my collection vintage and antique books concerning gardens.

Ja, en dan de bloemen.  Chrysanten.........?

Then we go to the flowers.  Chrysanthemums.......? Too early for me, I think these are ultimate autumn flowers, I mean flowers for end of October and November.  I grow them in different colours from cuttings I buy and/or grow myself from cuttings of old plants I keep in winter in the greenhouse.
When they are growing, I regularly squeeze the soft growth of the plant, in order to obtain richer plants. About in the end of August I stop the process and then they will start to bloom in October. However, I had forgotten to squeeze one of the plants with this wonderful autumn colour, hence its premature flowering.

Furthermore in the little bouquet, one flower of the rose 'Peaudouce', trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans)  and the variegated foliage of the Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon', the swamp anemone.
With this plant in the garden you have to watch out because it's a rampant groundcover that ruthlessly grows anywhere between. If you want to remove them by hand, you also will be unpleasantly surprised by the strange smell the root suckers and leaves spread when touched. These are the bad traits of the Houttuynia, one of the good qualities is that the leaves are coloring wonderful in this posy.

- the pictures I made in the afternoon on the same spot -

1st of January, the first morning of the new year, after a very short night Snarf is nagging me outof bed.
Snarf is not really crackproof.  When he was trained as a puppy, he could stand cracking, for he knew within the shortest moment that the dogtrainer was responsible for the cracks. After the first fright he jumped cheerful at the dogtrainer and looked at her : "That was you, I know".  But in real life he darts off by the slightest strange sound, dives into the trenches or rushes into the bushes, direction home or car.  So you see, a noisy oldyears eve and night with all the shrieking and cracking is not Snarf's cup of tea, I'll go you one better than he hides himself  shivering and panting under the table, under my desk, in the toilet or in the bathroom.  Normally he sleeps in his basket in the kitchen but this night he is allowed in the bedroom and sleeps on the foot-end of the bed. At about 5 o'clock when we are just settled down to sleep Snarf wants to go out for a pee, last time was early afternoon day before. After this break we go to sleep again for some time I hope, but just a few hours later I feel a paw on my shoulder, it's hardly light outside and I try to keep myself sleeping.  But than I get a wet nose in my face and he starts kicking me with his paws following by using me as a trampoline. I raise my voice and say:  "Go to sleep".  He is very obedient and immediately curls himself up on the end of the bed .  Only for a few minutes and than he starts again but this time my husband is his victim, in this way it goes on for a while until I get up tired. It's my turn to go for early morning walk with Snarf. During holidays, F. and I go by turns. All right, I like to get up in time and I also like the fresh air of the early mornings, but there are special days..........
I have to put on my rainhat for the rain is coming down in buckets, but when we are outdoors together we enjoy it as much as always. It is mouse-quiet, not the so called calmness before te storm, but the silence of the calmness after the storm.  We walk with stick and ball, soaked of rain, between glasshouses full of orchids and paprikas, along horse-stables, meadows and woodland to an open grass-land, where Snarf likes playing ballgames and jumping across ditches.

The lovely Sebright chickens of our neighbours are sometimes visiting our place.

Than all of a sudden I catch sight of something.........on the other side of the water-course along the glasshouse I see a FOX running. He runs in the same way as our sheepdog, low on the ground and fast, I stand stock-still and look..........Snarf is behind me and is standing still in the same way like me. When the fox is right opposite us, he stops, sits down and has a look at us.......
Oh, why have I left my camera home, I could have made lots of pictures of the fox.  It is a shame, but this will be my good intention for this new year, always take your camera.  I know already that it will not happen.  When we are moving again the fox runs swift as an arrow, crossing a gate in the direction we came from, on his way to a prey, may be our neighbour´s chickens.......
