De roos "Heathcliff" is een Engelse roos van David Austin, die pas vorig jaar op de markt is gebracht.
In mei 2012 waren wij bij David Austin in Albrighton en nadat we de showtuinen bezocht hadden, kocht ik toen twee rozen, "Tess of d'Urbervilles" en "A Shropshire Lad" (beiden voor hun namen, hoe roos gestoord kan een mens zijn). Zij hadden ook "Heathcliff" al te koop, maar na lang aarzelen heb ik hem niet genomen omdat de prijs ook "nieuw" was, dus duur. Natuurlijk, wilde ik "Heatcliff" wel hebben, want deze roos is genoemd naar de hoofdpersoon van mijn meest gelezen boek. Ik dacht die koop ik wel thuis in de herfst met kale wortel. Dat ging dus niet door, want hij was hier afgelopen jaar nog niet verkrijgbaar. Dit jaar mei was ik weer in Engeland en bij de eerste kwekerij waar ik hem zag, kocht ik "Heathcliff".
The rose 'Heathcliff" is an English rose of David Austin, which came on the market only last year. In May 2012 we visited on our holiday David Austin Roses in Albrighton. After watching the showgardens I bought at that time "Tess of d'Urbervilles" and "A Shropshire Lad" (both for their names, how rose-mad can we be). They also had already "Heathcliff" for sale, but after hesitating a while I did'nt buy the rose, because the price was "new" too, expensive. Of course, I wanted "Heathcliff", for this rose is called after the main character of my most read book. I thought of buying this rose with bare roots at home in autumn, but no, the rose was not yet available in our country. This year May we were in England again and at the first nursery I saw "Heathcliff", I bought the rose.
Thuis zette ik de roos voorlopig in een grote kuip, want in de zomer kun je moeilijk in de tuin gaan spitten.
Ze doet het prima en heeft al aardig wat bloemen gegeven. De bloemen zijn groot, dubbel en karmozijnrood, met een zekere zachtheid die doet denken aan de oude Gallica rozen. Ze heeft echter niet de diepe karmozijnrode kleur van de roos Shakespeare of de helder donkerrode kleur van Tess of d´Urbervilles. Hoewel ik eerst iets teleurgesteld was, vind ik Heathcliff prachtig. Volgens Austin is het een gezonde roos, met een tamelijk opgaande groei en glimmend donkergroen blad. Hierover kan ik nog niet helemaal oordelen, maar Heatcliff ziet er prima uit en vormt inderdaad al nieuwe opgaande scheuten.
Hierbij de foto´s die ik er van gemaakt heb van knop tot verwelking. De kleur komt niet zo goed tot zijn recht, want rood laat zich moeilijk fotograferen.
At home I put the rose temporary in a large tub, for in summer I won't dig in the garden. She is doing fine and gave already quite a few flowers. The flowers are large, double and crimson red, with a certain softness which remembers me to the old Gallica roses. However, this rose has not the deep crimson colour of the rose Shakespeare or the bright velvet colour of Tess of d'Urbervilles. Although, I was somewhat disappointed at first, I think the Heatcliff rose is beautiful on it's own. According to Austin it is a healthy rose, with a rather upright growth and glossy, deep green foliage. I can not judge this until now, but Heathcliff looks excellent and forms indeed already new upright shoots. I show you the pictures, from the first bud to fading away. The colour however, does not show into his own, because red is hard to photograph.

Het boek De Woeste Hoogten van Emily Brontë las ik voor het eerst toen ik ongeveer 15 jaar was. Hoewel ik het toen nog niet helemaal begreep, intrigeerde het me wel. Later las ik het opnieuw in een betere vertaling en daarna nog vele malen in het Engels. Tot nu toe staat het nog steeds op de eerste plaats van mijn buitenlandse literatuur boeken. Het is ook vele malen verfilmd. De hoofdrolspelers Cathy en Heatcliff van de verfilming uit 1992, spreken het meest tot mijn verbeelding. Ralph Fiennes als Heathcliff en Juliette Binoche als Cathy.
The book Wuthering Heights of Emily Brontë I read for the first time when I was about 15 years old. Even though I did not fully understand, it fascinated me. Later I red it again in a better Dutch translation and after that many times in the English language. Until now it is my all time favourite foreign literature book. It was filmed many times, of which the main players Cathy and Heathcliff of the film from 1992 speak most to my imagination. Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff and Juliette Binoche as Cathy.
Woeste Hoogten is de enige roman van de Britse schrijfster Emily Brontë. Het boek werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1847 onder het pseudoniem Ellis Bell. Emily Brontë stierf achttien maanden na de publicatie. Woeste Hoogten wordt gezien als een van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste boeken uit de Engelse literatuur. Het klassieke verhaal is nog altijd actueel door de kracht van universele thema's als liefde en haat en wraak en eenzaamheid.

Wuthering Heights is the only novel of the British writer Emily Brontë. The book was published in 1847 for the first time under pseudonym Ellis Bell. Emily Brontë died eightteen months after publication. Wuthering Heights is one of the most important and most influential books of the English literature. The classic story is still up-to-date by the strength of universal themes as love and hate and revenge and loneliness. I can recommend it to anyone, read it!
