The old fashioned roses are my favourites and these are in full bloom at this moment. The smell in the garden is, mainly in the early morning and in the evening almost intoxicating and that makes many good if I spend hours and hours with deadheading roses. Not only the filled fragrant flowers call the sense of romance, but also their French names. Let's be honest, Félicité Parmentier or Gloire de France sounds much better than Sexy Rexy or Westerland.
Rosa 'Tuscany superb'
De heerlijke Gallica roos 'Tuscany Superb', ook wel 'Old Velvet Rose' genoemd, staat in het paarse gedeelte van de tuin. Deze heeft dieprode tot paarse bloemen met fluwelige blaadjes. Ze geurt licht en is reuze sterk, heeft zelden kwaaltjes, alleen als het heel lang vochtig weer is, kan er wat meeldauw ontstaan.
Zoals bijna alle oude rozen bloeit ze alleen midden in de zomer. Ze is in 1629 al beschreven door John Parkinson.
The lovely Gallica rose 'Tuscany Superb', also called 'Old Velvet Rose' is situated in the purple part of the garden. This rose has deep red to purple flowers with velvety petals. She has a slight scent and is very strong. I seldom noticed diseases, only when the weather is humid for a long time, mildew can occur. She flowers only in mid summer like most old roses. It is not sure how old she is but John Parkinson described this rose already in 1629.
Rosa 'Madame Hardy'
Op de achtergrond in de boventuin staat één van mijn favorieten, de roos 'Madame Hardy'. Deze roos behoort to de groep van Damascener rozen. Bloeit helaas ook alleen in de zomer, maar wel verschrikkelijk mooi met witte gevulde middelgrote bloemen en in het hart een groene punt. Ze geurt heerlijk zoet en is in 1832 gekweekt door M. Hardy in Frankrijk. De Heer Hardy was in die tijd directeur van 'Jardin Luxembourg' in Parijs en hij noemde de roos naar zijn vrouw. Deze roos staat voor een altijdgroene taxushaag achter in de border en komt daar prachtig tot haar recht.
On the back in my upper garden grows one of my favourites, the rose 'Madame Hardy'. This rose belongs to the group of Damask roses. Is flowering also only in summer, but very beautifully with white filled medium seized flowers and in the centre a small green eye. She smells deliciously sweet and is raised by M. Hardy in France in 1832. Mr. Hardy was at that time director of 'le Jardin de Luxembourg' in Paris and when he had bred this rose he called her after his wife. The rose is situated in front of the evergreen yew in the border and she shows beautifully on that spot.
Rosa 'Honorine de Brabant'
'Honorine de Brabant' is een Bourbonroos uit de 19e eeuw. Er is nauwelijks iets bekend over de afkomst van deze roos, alleen dat zij door ene Rémi Tanne in 1916 is ontdekt. De bloemen zijn tweekleurig waar ik eigenlijk niet zo van houd, maar zo'n roos mag in mijn tuin niet ontbreken en door de tijd heen, ben ik ook van deze roos gaan houden. De bloemen hebben een witte tot licht roze ondergrond en vertonen lila vlekken en strepen. Ze zijn gevuld, komvormig en geurig. Wat wil je nog meer! Het is een grote bossige struik van bijna 2 meter hoog en net zo breed. In september bloeit ze nog een keer. Jammer dat de bladrollers ook dol zijn op de Honorine.
'Honorine de Brabant' is a Bourbon rose from the 19th century. There is hardly known anything of her heritage, just that she has been discovered by Rémi Tanne in 1916. The flowers are dichromatic what I do not like so much, but such a rose may not be missed in my garden and through the time, I started to love this rose too. The flowers have a white to pale pink basis and show lilac spots and stripes. They are filled, cupshaped and fragrant. What else do you want! It's a shame that 'leaf rollers' love Honorine too.
Rosa 'Félicité de Parmentier'
Ik weet dat ik het telkens over 'mijn favoriete roos' heb, maar dit is dus echt mijn nr. 1 favoriete roos!
Deze roos is van vóór 1834 en in 1836 op de markt gebracht door Louis Parmentier in België. Ze vormt een bossige struikroos tot 1.20 m. hoog waarvan de takken dichtbezet zijn met stekeltjes. Het blad is diepgroen en duidelijk generfd. De bloemen zijn bleekroze, verkleurend tot crème. De bloemen zijn vrij rond en worden 6,5 cm. in doorsnee. Onder de Alba rozen die toch al geurend zijn, valt deze roos op door de zeer zoete lucht die zij verspreidt.
Zij staat al 23 jaar op dezelfde plaats maar krijgt de laatste jaren last van de schaduw van andere heesters en bomen die er al net zo lang staan. Ga na de bloei stekken maken voor een beter plekje in de tuin.
I know I almost call every rose 'my favourite rose', but this is really my number 1 favourite rose! This rose is prior to 1834 and introduced by Louis Parmentier in Belgium in 1836. She forms a bushy shrub to 1.20 m. high of which the branches are full of prickles and the leaves pale green. She has densely packed buds, opening to such full flowers of clear flesh pink. The petals reflex, a fully open flower being of exquisite beauty, shaped almost like a ball, and fading to cream at the edges. She is spreading a very sweet fragrance. Félicité Parmentier is already 23 years on the same spot in our garden but the last few years she is in trouble due to the shade of surrounding shrubs and trees which are grown up in these years too. After flowering I shall make cuttings for a better place in the garden.
Rosa ´Gloire de France´
(in combination with Clematis 'Romantika'
De roos ´Gloire de France´, is weer een Gallica roos van vóór 1819. De 7 cm. grote, lila bloemen met een lichtere rand zijn zeer gevuld, pomponachtig, vaak gekwartierd en werkelijk onweerstaanbaar, zo mooi. Als ik deze roos zie, krijg ik trek in rozenijs.
The rose 'Gloire de France' is a Gallica rose, bred prior to 1819. The 7 cm big, lilac-pink flowers, paling with age towards the edges, pompon-like, often quartered and truly irresistable, so beautiful. When I see this rose, I get appetite for a rose ice-cream.
´Rosa Mousseline´
This rose I bought for the name, oops what silly. It is a French Moss rose, raised and introduced by Portimer in 1855 and is also often found under the name of 'Alfred de Dalmas'. That sounds much less romantic. The flowers are creamy pink, medium sized, cupped and of course delicately scented. Unfortunately the growth is somewhat disappointing at my place and she suffers quickly of black spot. I was fed up with this rose and cut her down to the bottom on 15 cm in March of this year. She grew again cheerfully to a compact bush of about 1 meter high, is in bloom again, but continues to have ugly leaves.
Vandaag plukte ik wat van de besproken rozen en zette ze met enkele zeeuwse knoopjes in een klein theepotje.
Today I picked some of above mentioned roses and put them with Astrantia flowers in a small teapot.
