EINDELIJK SCHAATSEN - FINALLY ICE-SKATING

Finally we can skate on the lakes. Last week the weather was very promising, moderate to heavy frost, hardly any wind, the water changed in one night in ice smooth as a mirror.  In the weekend icy wind and snowfall were a kill-joy.  But frost continued, the sun came back and now we have already three beautiful ice-skating days.

My father was an enthusiast figure skater and when I was 6 years old he put me on the ice.  Where I have been grown up there was less water than where we live now so we skated in that time on the natural ice rink or behind the farm where two very deep wheels were situated, named "The Large and The Small Hole". These wheels are caused by a damburst in 1533.
When I was 8 I got real figure skates and my father teached us circling, reeling and all kind of caprioles. In that time figure skating was more in vogue than nowadays, there are hardly figure skaters on natural ice, speed skating is the typical Dutch sport.  After my marriage I moved to the watery area of South-Holland, I still know I said the first time I came here : "what a high water level". They also told me in the past they could skate in cold winters from Rotterdam to Gouda, where they bought a long stone pipe, the point was to bring this pipe back home unbroken.
When I had been skating several times on the frozen river on my figure skates,  I wanted Norwegian speedskates.  That was a big change, but I got used to it. After that time I kept my figure skates for the ice rink or on a pond and I joined an ice dancing club for some years.

Nowadays I mainly skate when there is natural ice.  I have to acknowledge that I don't even skate for sport, being outside in nature with all elements of the weather  is most important for me, the plain of ice, the wide open landscape, the cold, the wind, the sun and the snow. Looking around and enjoying, preferably in the morning when there are hardly people to be seen.

Below a painting from Andreas Schelfhout : Winter landscape with 'Koek en Zopie' at night (1849)

After all those years there has not changed so much on the ice, the 'Koek en Zopie' is still there.

What is the origine of the word 'Koek en Zopie'? This is the food and beverage which is sold by the ice, mainly consisting of hot chocolate, glühwein, pea soup and filled cakes. Zopie is the name of the liquor people were drinking on the ice in the 17th up to and incl. the 19th century, and yes, in Duth the name speaks for itself, when you drink enough of this, you will be drunken.

The original recipee for Zopie is as follows:
1 liter beer
1 cinnamon stick
2 cloves
2 slices of lemon
125 gr. brown caster sugar
2 eggs
1 dl brown rum

Boil the beer together with the cinnamon, cloves and lemon. Infuse it on a low back burner for about 20 minutes. Mix the sugar with the eggs and thicken the beer with this. Finally add the rum.
 You should drink it hot!

Snarf en mijn dochter komen me tegemoet / Snarf and my daughter come to meet me.

We had some blissful cold days on the ice, tomorrow we shall have some snow again and afterwards thaw.
I am looking forward to the snowdrops !

BUITEN KOUD, MAAR BINNEN BEGINT DE LENTE - COLD OUTSIDE, BUT AT HOME SPRING IS COMING.

Again some early morningwalk photos, I only wonder why they are all so blue, was my camera depressive of the cold?  Or was it the darkness in combination with cold? It was still 2 days before 'Blue Monday', so too early for that kind of silly things.  I don't know but I like the blue colour. It represents the sphere as it was, the silence, the quietness, the bare bedewed branches in a white landscape. Than a herd of honking geese is flying over in V-shape, this means there is more frost in the air. Under the shrubs small birds are pattering, looking for food. Than my eye is catching a redwing, these birds are here only in winter. Carefully I try to approach the bird to make a picture, but again and again, the redwing is whisking away when I'm there. All right I shall leave him alone on this gloomy morning.

Fresh snow has fallen. A shame about the ice which is covered now with a thin layer of snow. Yesterday, my husband told me some men were skating on the lakes, so in the early afternoon I went there.  Brrrrr, a hard icy wind blew over the lakes.  When I was on the landing place to put on my skates I was almost alone, except some viewers and undecided who braved the cold wind.  I looked around and saw far away just 4 men skating. I looked and hesitated, it began to snow again, more and more,  than I turned abruptly and was very rapidly home by the fire.  Still I feel myself an old dullard, but there will be many more chances this week,

Outside it's even by day-time minus 6 degr., but at home spring is slowly coming. Last week when frost arrived, I transported all my tubs and pots with springbulbs outof the cold greenhouse to the heated conservatory. Haha, it's not a beautiful still life in the conservatory now, I almost cannot walk in there of the pots on the floor, also crammed between other plants on the sill and on the shelves of the open cupboard. I hope this will not be for long.  On the table I have my hyacinths on glasses, after the 1st of January I brought them inside from the basement where they stood on a dark spot.  When I first saw them they had white stumps like witloof. Apparently it had been too warm for the bulbs in the basement.  After a week in the light conservatory, they had recovered and at the moment they are almost all in bloom.
After switching them on the table, I put the lilac ones in another room.  I poored tea in my huge teacups bought on a market in Limoges, France when we were there on holidays and we had home-baked mini-cupcakes with pink hearts.  Despite of the cold and snow, we had another lovely Sunday afternoon!

There is nothing more changeable than the weather, the year started mild with temperatures of +8 degr. C. and my winterflowering shrubs were blooming abundantly, now the weather has broken, this morning it was -13 degr. C and the forecast for coming nights is -8 degr. C. and even lower.  We also had enough snow to make beautiful landscape pictures, but due to the early time in the morning and snow was still falling my pictures are not so good, it was still gloomy and rather dark. Anyway,  we had a fantastic walk in the snow and were really  the silence of the white world.

De ene morgen  - One morning
buiten het hek - outside the gate

"Have you ever noticed a tree standing naked
against the sky,
How beautiful it is?
All its branches are outlined,
and in its nakedness
There is a poem, there is a song
Every leaf is gone and it is waiting for the spring.
When the spring comes, it again fills the tree with
The music of many leaves,
Which in due season fall and are blown away.
And this is the way of life.
                                     - Krishnamurti -

Snarf was upset, another dog had stolen his football.

Binnen het hek, in de tuin
Inside the gate, in the garden

De andere morgen / The other morning

This morning it is bright and frosty.  We walk through woodland, grassland and along a pond, but what caught my eye on the other side of the pond, I can't beleive my eyes.........a fox.  That is the second time  in a few weeks, wonderful.  Yes, now I have my camera, but it is still too dark and too far away......

We walk on to see the sunrise and to see if the lakes are already frozen over.

And look........the ice is as smooth as a mirror.  What a mercy the lake has only frozen over last night after the snowfall with this very calm weather, this is great, skating within a few days.  O, how I love to!!!!!

Glad en wijd ligt het ijs
in een veeg wit en grijs
en de lucht, tastbre kou,
is gestolpt onder blauw.
En mijn schaats met een kras
als een schot onder glas
trekt een veervormig spoor
van mijn voet uit te loor.
Ik scheer scheef op het vlak
langs een donkerblauw wak.
Na een sprong voor een scheur
als een koord, schiet ik voort
op het staal en ik duik
in de wind en gebruik
elke spier, die geniet
als ik suis langs het riet.

In de middag / In the afternoon
De zon schijnt / The sun is shining

We zijn weer thuis / Home again
