IN THE SPOTLIGHTS: AKEBIA QUINATA AND PLEIONE TANGARIRO.

This week I put the Akebia quinata in the spotlights. This not so ordinary climber is in full bloom now in the garden. In the past this climber was growing over the pergola, but since that collapsed during an autumn storm, this Akebia has its tendrils nestled in and around an old shrub rose.

Akebias are native to Japan, China and Korea.  It is a wild grower and the tendrils like winding around each other, creating a wild tangle of twigs. Of course I can avoid this by training them directly in the right direction, but I just have a lack of that kind of tidyness. I like a bit of a wilderness, trick is not to let it get too far, for instance, if the Akebia will be mastering the rose, I certainly shall intervene.

There are two varieties, the Akebia quinata and the Akebia trifoliata, and of course some cultivars are grown. In our garden we have the Akebia quinata with pretty handshaped five-part leaves. During, and sometimes before developing new foliage, flowers appear which spread a hint of vanilla scent. In one cluster are male and female flowers, it's a unisexual plant. The female flowers are dark red to purple, the male flowers are pale pink and slightly smaller.
When we have a warm and sunny summer flowers are followed by sausage shaped fruits with a purple blue colour. In my plant I only once saw fruits. In our country this climber is also called 'schijnaugurk' and in America this climber is known as 'chocolate vine'.

Then we go to a quite different story. Last year, eldest daughter M. came to have dinner with us on a Sunday evening after a long walk with the walking club in Gelderland.  On the way they passed a nursery, De Boschhoeve, and however closed on Sundays, you could buy plants and put the money in a box. She saw something special for me and bought it, then she brought the tiny plant, first walking and then by train.  Of course it was very nice and sweet of her, but I also thought, help, this will be a challenging case.

It was a Pleione tongariro, an earth orchid.

Of course I searched immediately for information how to treat this plant. It is a dwarf orchid from Tibet. She loves a half sunny/warm sheltered spot and in winter a frostfree place. Flowering time is April/May. Although you can put this plant in the garden it's more handy to keep it in a pot. If you take good care, i.e. keep them dry in winter and begin carefully misting and watering in spring, the orchid will reward you with beautiful flowers.  After flowering now and then a little gift of fertilizer and more water until autumn, then you will see they multiply amazingly fast. Because they really only are beautiful during flowering, these easy growing orchids are often neglected and yes, that is what they don't like.  Put pots or dishes with these earth orchids especially not on the ground, but on a rack or etagere, which forms a barrier against pill bugs and snails.

This week to my great surprise I discovered in my greenhouse one Pleione tongariro flower and more buds, so this wonderful earth orchid got a prominent spot on a high table.  This morning there were even two flowers.  Those are the fun things for a woman gardener!

GEDACHTEN UIT MIJN 'TUIN'-STOEL - THOUGHTS FROM MY 'GARDEN' SEAT.

Last week I had no energy to sit down at the pc, just for a moment looking on my iPad during coffee- or lunchtime, that was it. We had some wonderful days on which I hardly knew where to start, so much to do and to enjoy outside in the garden as well as inside. While I prefer working outdoors, the house was calling, cleaning jitters fell upon me. Especially in our living where the woodstove burned all winter it was not a luxury to give it a good cleaning with soapy water. But the sun was luring me out again and again. Result: everywhere work in progress, anyway I will get ready, it only will take some time.  Of course I took some photos during my early morning round in the garden.

Friday I thought: 'Now I have to make a blogpost', pffft in the evening I lacked the energy, yes years are counting. Saturday afternoon I sorted the photos, then I had a look at my blogposts of former years in April. I should not have done that, largely it was every year the same. From 2012 until this moment about the same flowers and plants, about new growth and so on, even the photos were almost the same.  Depressed I closed the computer, next time better.

Last night, actually very early in the morning I thought it all over and see, I'm here again.

I clean my house, the jackdaws make preparations for their nest in the dovecote.

Former years they upholstered their nest with horsehair, the horse called Grandiose, remains stoically.

This year they had other plans. For spring cleaning I put the red cow-hide, normally as a carpet in the livingroom, outside on the porch.  Promptly one of the crows began pulling out hairs....... What's the idea behind: 'This is even more convenient, only 5 meters from my nest, flying to those horsebacks is about 10 meters....'.  After the photo I took the 'carpet' immediately inside, you understand.

Pear trees blossom white, after the book written by Gerbrand Bakker, highly recommended.
This is the Gieser Wildeman, F. loves stewed pears in winter. I could not resist to make another photo, phenomenal against the plain blue sky.

The budding leaves of the Acer pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantissimum', make me lyrical.

Oh I wanted to reduce this time in photos and in text, but I cannot resist, when I have started I naturally get excited.

Rovers....

I almost stepped on this egg in the flowerborder. Probably the duck could not keep her egg until she reached her nest. I put the egg on a boxwood, next day it had gone. Raptors....

Mijn ontdekking in de composthoop.........

My discovery in the compost heap......

Do you see this cute little one? When we had our breakfast in the conservatory this morning I saw the bunny nibbling on the Nepetas. There are three of them and their parents, that makes five (may be there are more). In the evening when the sun goes down, they eat together on the lawn. The little ones are slightly bigger than my hand. When I'm in the garden, I sometimes hear them crackling between plants or I see them running away. They have already been nibbling at my just planted sweet peas. F. put wire mesh around now.

Hier geldt echter mijn motto:

'Eerst de dieren dan de planten'.

I adore them despite they destroy half my garden. However, here goes my motto:

'First animals, second plants'.

Iedereen een prachtige nieuwe week toegewenst!

A wonderful new week for you all!

BEZOEK AAN DE KEUKENHOF - VISITING THE 'KEUKENHOF'.

Blue and white in the Delfts Blue Garden.

Last Wednesday a friend an I spent a visit to the Keukenhof gardens at Lisse, the ultimate tourist attraction of our country in the months of April and May.

The last time I visited the Keukenhof was more than 40 years ago and honestly speaking I was never attracted to go again, too touristy, too many people. And yet I wanted to visit this park (country seat) of more than 200 ha and whose history goes back to the 15th century, once more. To be there for the large crowds I departed at 6.30 in the morning, took my friend and at 7.50 we were at the entrance as one of the first. We were the second car on the enormous still empty carparks.

Where are the gardeners?

Here and there gardeners were still working to make this huge park spick and span for a new day. A day without wind, occasional dark clouds, but it ended up with bright sunshine, we had a great day.

This man carefully put sticks beside the hyacinths to prevent falling over of the flowers.

Grape hyacinths and daffodils are flowing like water between the trees, an amazing sight.

Prachtige combinaties van scillaatjes, anemonen en tulpjes.

Beautiful combinations of  Scillas, Anemones and Tulipas.

A mixture of Corydalis solida, Scilla siberica en Chionodoxa.

Geel, de lentekleur bij uitstek.

Yellow, spring colour par excellence.

Beautiful Corylopsis on the background of the brightly colored tulips.

Places to unwind from the colour explosion.

Fortunately the exuberant colours are somewhat tempered by the surrounding trees and shrubs sprouting in various shades of green.

I love these soft colored Hyacinths, spreading a lovely fragrance.

On the edge of the Keukenhof you have a wonderful view over the bulbfields and countryside.

Below some fragments of  'The Sensitive-Plant' by Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1820:

"Then the pied wind-flowers and the tulip tall
and narcissi, the fairest among them all,
Who gaze on their eyes in the stream's recess,
Till they die of their own dear loveliness".

"And the hyacinth purple, and white, and blue,
which flung from its bells a sweet peal anew
Of music so delicate, soft and intense
It was felt like an odour within the sense".

Tulipa humilis from the Middle East.

Behind the daffodils a meandering path of Epimedium 'Orange Queen'.

Ook het krentenboompje begint te bloeien.

Amelanchier starts flowering too.

And what about this lovely mixture of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and Fritellarias, yes plenty of ideas for our own gardens here.

A last colorful mixture!

My image of the 'Keukenhof' has been revised, it was a great day and the photos I showed were only a small part of the many we made.

The last few weeks were so full, that I hardly had time for blogging.  I usually computer in the evening but there were all kind of circumstances that I was out in the evening or too exhausted to start something.  Hope to be here again soon and thank you so much for your kind comments and visits to my blog, I always read them with pleasure.
