2017/2018

2018

I'm grateful to all my followers and readers for their sympathy, sweet words and just nice comments in this for me most sad year ever.

Yet I will start a new year full of courage. I'm looking forward to the first snowdrops, to the days getting longer again, to the birds singing again, to the cozy chat and trips with my grandsons, to the roses flowering again and especially to the sun which hopefully will shine frequently.

for 2018
I wish you
A GOOD START,  A GOOD HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND
PROSPERITY

KERSTVIERING - CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

For Christmas I show you pictures of some dear moments of the last few days.

After all the snow of two weeks ago, this rose 'Tess of d'Urbervilles' of D. Austin is blooming lonely but wonderful in a gloomy garden. Yesterday I noticed her brilliant red Christmas color among all the drabness of these last days of the year.  That  I had to capture on a photo.

Inside the candles are lit early in a part of my collection of tin to make it a little cozy.

The lights in and around the nativity creates atmosphere in the conservatory, especially when there was snow outside, as you see.

The band 'No Idea' with grandson Philip as drummer were playing and singing 'Come to Jeruzalem' on the rock song Seven Nation Army of the White Stripes for the Christmas celebration of their school. They were the three wise from the East, but could not wear the cloaks their school teacher brought because dressed as Wises from the East they could not use their hands to play, lol. There came 15 groups of scholars with parents to hear this Christmas performance, every 5 to 10 minutes another group, so the boys had to play and sing 15 times the same song......... It was real fun, a garden full of swinging children and parents.

One of my most beautiful balls with on the background the old 'painting' of a cow stable, that used to be at my grandmother's diningroom above the door.

And then the asylum seeking ornamental pheasant came to take a look at the table decorated with Christmas branches on the porch.

The decoration we made on our monthly garden club day,  is on the table.

With this I wish you all a merry Christmas!

ZONSOPGANG OP ZONDAG - SUNRISE ON SUNDAY

First of all I thank you all for the lovely comments on my last post, there were many, I read them with pleasure but hardly have time to answer them separately, so I only respond to specific questions.

Yesterday, Sunday morning I made a bike trip to the river after quite a long time at this early hour of the day. The sky was fairly clear and then you have most chance for a wonderful sunrise over the water. I had not expected frost with slipperiness when I stepped outside, so I was almost stretched out under the porch stairs. Watch out Janneke, I have lost most wild hair but I´m still too fast.
It was also pretty cold but we can handle that.
Arrived at the river I left my bike on the path and walked upon the dike. It is always a joy to be outside, preferably on my own, I really never get enought of it and if I walk and stand there, I intend to do this much more.  Of course that does not happen, unless I take a dog again, then you go automatically, certainly with a border collie........

This weeping willow showing so nice along the waterside, I put already many times on my blog in summer and winter.

I look over the water surface of the lakes. The sun has not yet appeared above the horizon, it is quiet and fresh, a soft glow appears and turns the clouds slowly from gray to peach.

The soft glow changes quickly into bright orange and yes the first speck of our copper sun appears behind the ´skyscrapers´ (lol) of Nesselande.

I cycle back home, in the backlight of the sun I see that sheep have come to life again and started  their first nibbles grass of the day.

At home I go first to the chickens and see the pheasant sitting on the chickensteps, she just wants to enter the house. For those who do not know yet, weeks ago I suddenly discovered an ornamental pheasant in the garden, it was a female golden pheasant. Since that time she stays often with our chickens in the henhouse, in the meantime chickens are used to her. Her leg is tagged but I just can not get her, I have registered her with missing animals and put her in the local newspaper, but nobody came up. As far as I´m concerned she can stay.

In the shack I turned the electric heating on and went to my kitchen to make coffee. Then I returned to my heated place to spend coffee time with my chickens, I have opened the door to their section of the shack. and from here I also have another view to the garden. Lol, am I crazy or not.

To finish, I received a nice card of a sweet friend with a wonderful quote of Roald Dahl, which louds as follows:

"And above all,
watch with glittering eyes
the whole world around you,
because the greatest secrets
are always hidden
in the most unlikely places."

DE EERSTE SNEEUW - FIRST SNOW

We are back in the dark days before Christmas and......this morning the first snowdrops were falling. In the meantime it's snowing hard. The glass roof of the conservatory is covered with a layer of snow and even the glass on one side is completely snowy because I keep the heating low on not more than 10 degr.C.
Last week I pulled out the Nativity scene, made by my father a long time ago, and put it in the conservatory. It's always nice to decorate the barn, as if I am playing with a doll's house. I do some hay in the barn so they all are warm, the donkey and the ox, the baby Jezus in the feed crib with Jozef and Maria and the three kings are watching in the background. In the ridge of the barn is an angel. I covered the soil outside with some moss from the garden and sheep with lambs are grazing there. The shepherd carries a lamb under his arm and a camel is tied to the fence.
My father was good in woodcarving, especially animals. Funnily enough he was very bad in making people, the proportions were never or rarily correct, especially the angel is a good example of this. We always had to laugh about it.

I look through the windows at the front and the back of the house, it looks bleak, but the gray world changes rapidly into a beautiful white world.

Despite the cold and wet I get excited and go outside to make some photos of the garden and afterwards I bring the chickens a tasty snack of  a sandwich with cabbage, lettuce and apple besides their normal food of grains.

Brrrr, inside again I dive into my den with a mug of coffee between the books. Except for the stove in the living room is this the best place to spend these dark days.  On the bookmill is the huge bouquet of chrysanthemums I received from a friend a few days ago. I'm going to have a nice read in the recently bought book 'Women with green fingers are out of the ordinary'  written by Claudia Lanfranconi and Sabine Frank. Originally it's a German book, named 'Die Damen mit dem grünen Daumen'.

So this is it for today, meanwhile I look outside and see that it's raining.........the white world is starting to dissolve again into a gizzled gray world.

SOMBERE DAGEN MET EEN ZONNIG TINTJE - GLOOMY DAYS WITH A SUNNY TOUCH

Slowly but surely we are going into winter, the days are getting shorter and shorter, the chickens enter their nightloft already at 16.30 and are at 8 o'clock  in the morning still on stick , as you see they take the time to get up.  Apparently I'm still close to the chickens, or nature.  I should like to go 'on stick'  after sunset too to get up only after 8 o'clock in the morning, so comfortable to hibernate.  But, beware, in summer I  aksi follow the chickens, then I love rising early full of energy at about five and am ready to start a new day to go on till deep in the evening, or just enjoy the long evenings.

The Larch I brought as a mini seedling from Drenthe, this deciduous conifer has grown up to a beautiful tree in about 10 years. At this time of year he drops his needles and this year we have for the first time little cones, a beauty in itself.

The dark sky on the background is beautiful too, although I sometimes desperatily long for the sun which gladly shows up for a while  almost daily at unexpected moments. All these pictures were  taken on the last day of November, except last photo of the rooster, that was on Sunday one week ago.

A just not faded flower of the rose 'Abraham Darby, which is going strong this year. When I stroll in the garden there is still so much beauty to see, it's the little things that make it now.
Here and there you still see rosebuds. Above bud, also 'Abraham Darby' is perhaps more beautiful than the summerbuds, especially because they really stand out in this gloomy time of year.

I, who always nag that my Ginkgo does not show autumn color as in other gardens, still got satisfaction. The beautiful weeping form of this Ginkgo biloba shows at last his exuberant autumn colors, just only for a while, for the soil is already covered with a carpet of leaves.

And then I discover this season's  first Cyclamen coum .......

In the conservatory I have my sunny surprise, the lemon tree youngest daughter gave me some years ago from a holiday in Italy.  When she gave me the small tree, it wore already more than 10 lemons. The following years no new lemons appeared on the tree. I suppose the shrub had to get used to the foreign climate, moreover surviving in a pot or tub as a kind of bonsai tree is not easy at all.

This year was better, I left the shrub in the greenhouse where it's warm and sunny in summer, gave special manure for Mediterranean plants and look I have lemons again.  On November 22nd I moved the shrub to the conservatory where it's not freezing cold in winter and 'harvested' my lemons, lol.

For the photos I put a blue cloth on the table, waited for a few sunbeams between the rain clouds, and look it's high summer........for a moment.

One single green lemon may get a bit more yellow.

And who is peeping in again?  My cheeky but oh so cute rooster.
However, that was last Sunday, today it's grey and wet and my feathered friends stay close to the shelter of their run and henhouse.

On a wet day in November we paid a visit with our gardenclub to Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar. What we got to see exceeded my wildest expectations. As the brochure mentions it is an experience of art, nature and architecture together.  The modern building that serves the art in every respect is surrounded by the beautiful nature of estate Voorlinden. The elongated shape of the building consists of natural stone and glasswalls through which the experience of nature is, as it were, inside.
The garden around the museum is a design of Piet Oudold and the whole year round interesting to watch by the shapes and stuctures of the plants. As you see, it also looks good on a drizzly day deep in autumn.

In the museum you can find an extensive collection of contemporary and modern art. There are temporary exhibitions but there are also permanent works of art as these five cylindrical sculptures of solid glass. As I remember well they have a weight of 4500 kg. each. The outside looks frosty. On the other hand the top is completely transparent and smooth as a water surface. Water is the all-determining factor in the oeuvre of artist Roni Horn, because water is always moving.

The overwhelming view outside  impresses and amazes the gardenladies.

I first thought to see a group of cormorants fly.....
'Black Kites'  made by Arturo Hernández Alcázar from Mexico are  made of stones, trash bags, nylon and string. Each black kite is tied to a stone with a string and together they form a black ominous cloud.  With this piece of art the artist refers to birds as bad omens.

Another view outside.......

For us as plantlovers there happened to be a very appropriate exhibition of the artist couple Shio Kusaka and Jonas Wood. They live and work in Los Angeles already for more than 10 years.  She is a ceramist, born in Morioka, Japan and he is an American artist of paintings from Boston. Shio and Jonas work from their personal memories and shared histories. This exhibition is a journey through the colourful, eclectic world of the two artists in which the distinction between high art and low art has disappeared.

A major recurring motif in Jonas' oeuvre it the ceramic of his wife Shio. In above painting displays of her elegantly crafted pots are alternated with ordinary terracotta pots.

- Large Shelf Still Life -

- Backyard Snowscape -

This painting 'Backyard Snowscape' of Jonas Wood really appealed to my imagination and I thought was one of the most beautiful of the exhibition. Made a few interesting close-ups.

- Green Garden Landscape Pot -

- Green Landscape Pot with Orchid

In front of the painting a wonderful collection of ceramic made by Shio Kusaka.

Before we left the museum we had the opportunity to have a look in the giant library. The space is filled from plinth to ceiling with approx. 40.000 books about the artists in their collection.
They could have left me here for a while......

You understand that this is only an impression of all we have seen, but  if you have a chance I recommend you wholeheartidly to go there yourself to discover the beauty of culture and nature together. Don't forget to reserve a tour inside for than the art really starts to live.

The outside, the estate of 40 hectares with the Piet Oudolf garden around the museum, the park old park designed by our famous J. Zocher Sr. and later reorganized by L. Springer and then the dunes on the background, is for every nature lover an invitation for a beautiful walk. When you are on the top of the dunes, you can see the sea.
Well, we did not come to a walk that day but I shall go back, that 's for sure.

We enjoyed our lunch in the country house of the estate. The country house was built in 1912 in English style to the design of the English architect Johnston for jhr. Hugo Loudon, the owner at that time.
A worthy end of another great garden club day.
