EIND JANUARI IN EN OM DE TUIN - END OF JANUARY IN AND AROUND THE GARDEN

Kom op Snarf, we gaan even een rondje tuin doen.

Come on Snarf, let's have a stroll in the garden.

There is no snow, no ice, today also no sun, in short a dull final January day in a dreary garden where fortunately a few things are in bloom.

Een zachtroze Camellia.....

A soft pink Camellia......

en een lichtroze Helleborus orientalis....

and a light pink Helleborus orientalis.....

en een lichte met roze aderen.......

and a pale one with pink veins.......

The yellow and the fragrance of Hamamellis 'Arnold's Promise' pops out.

De eerste krokusjes.

First crocuses.

Sneeuwklokjes beginnen ook.......

Snowdrops are starting too......

This double white Hellebore is already blooming from the beginning of December.

One of the new snowdrops I bought last year at the snowdrop gala in Andijk, is not yet showing her beautiful inside.

Everywhere in the garden are Hellebores blooming, they are very early this year.

Earlier I showed already a blue flowering Iris reticulata, but now there's also a purple one.

If you want to see the flowers you have to take a closer look, if you look around it is pretty bare, really January.

Yesterday I made a hazelnut cake because children and grandchildren came for dinner. Once a month I like to do extra my best when the whole family is toegether. This time I went on the Italian tour with a main course of Italian stew: chicken in hunter's way - Pollo alla cacciatora, I found it on www.smulweb.nl. Together with pasta, a mixed salad and a small bowl of grated Italian cheese, it was delicious. For dessert we had chocolate fondue with pieces of cake and fruit especial for the boys (and my husband). For the fans there was cheese and port and with the coffee we had the already mentioned hazelnut cake. That hazelnut cake had a particular extra taste by the added lavender sugar. I found a recipe where they added a few teaspoons of dried lavenderflowers to the batter. That remembered me to the yar of Yorkshire lavender sugar I still had in my cupboard. I did not know how to use that sugar. this was my chance. I added 50 gr. lavender sugar to the batter instead of normal sugar and also used one tablespoon of lavendersugar in the whipped cream. It was exactly right, special but yummie.

As always, it was an enjoyable long dining and when the coffee came on the table the boys were allowed to enjoy themselves with comic books and computer games.

As you see, Snarf is waiting for me, as always: "What shall we do?" "Nothing Snarf, I want to finish my blogpost first, go to the boss".

These yellow flowers I saw yesterday morning on my walk with Snarf along the bushes. Some snowdrops and my once highly coveted winter aconites. Yes,such a pity but the winter aconite won't grow in my garden. Tried it many times near shrubs and hedges, planted bulbs but also got flowering parts from friends, still I did not manage to keep them, I gave up.

The Winter Aconite Fairy Poem

Deep in the Earth
I woke, I stirred.
I said: "Was that Spring I heard?
For something called!"
"No, no,"they said:
"Go back to sleep. Go back to bed."
"You're far too soon;
The world's too cold
For you, so small,"So I was told.
But how could I
Go back to sleep?
I could not wait; I had to peep!

Up, up, I climbed,
And here am I.
How wide the earth! How great the sky!
O wintry world,
See me, awake!
Spring calls, and comes; 'tis no mistake.

                                                   - Cicely Mary Barker -

We walked on, and as you see Snarf was in his element.

March 1st, the centerpiece of the garden is as good as empty.  We even transplanted a few Camellias with bud and flower, but I'm hopeful they have weathered this action.
Before we go to the garden, we'll have a cup of tea.  On the table there is a dish made by daughter C., in the dish my last white hyacinths.  They were on glasses, but they fell, now they may spend their last blooming days lying.

I baked a cake of the last hazelnuts I picked during my walks with Snarf last October. Most work was cracking the nuts. I found a recipe and baked a delicious cake, which was heavy on the stomach. Half a slice is really not scrimpy but more than sufficient for 'old women' like me.

Recept Hazelnootcake.

200 gr. hazelnoten(zonder dop)    8 eieren
250 gr. suiker                                 200 gr. boter
1 eetlepel cacaopoeder                  0,5 theelepel bakpoeder
250 gr. zelfrijzend bakmeel          iets zout.

Eet smakelijk!

Recipe Hazelnutcake.

200 gr. hazelnuts (without shell)  8 eggs
250 gr. sugar                                 200 gr. butter
1 teaspoon cacoapowder               0,5 teaspoon baking powder
250 gr. self raising flour                salt

Beat the sugar and butteer until it's creamy, then beating in the eggs, one by one.
Gently mix the sifted floor, baking powder and salt with the batter and then the cocoa.
Baking in a greased cake tin for about 50 minutes in a preheated oven at 175 degr. C.

Bon appetit!

Then we go out to see a piece of literally bare garden. We were not in a hurry, that's why it almost took all winter to empty and transplant this piece of the garden.  You should not beleive but here were so many plants:  4 cypresses, box hedges, clinker paths, more boxwood, 21 ancient and shrub roses, 1 buddleja, perennials and bulbs.
Now there is only one seedling Hellebore.  I waited until this one opened their buds and now I know these flowers are not so pretty, so the plant can go away.

When I look behind me, I am so happy to see the blooming Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis'  with small flowers showing beautifully against te blue sky.

There are also quite some Helleborus flowering, I want to make some pictures, what succeeds partly. Carefully I try to bow their hanging heads up behind a stem, so that they remain standing, but they are stubborn, I take my camera and wham there they go again.

Also the Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'  is happy blooming again.  After the pergola had collapsed with a storm, we had to prune the shrub drastically, so I feared the worst.

And from now on I try to show you every first day of the month this part of the garden, then you can keep track of my progress. Let us hope it shows better in June.

PRONKERWTEN - SWEET PEAS

The sweet peas are in full bloom again.  This year I did not sow separate colours but just a mixture.
I glanced back on my sweet pea blogs of 2012 and 2013, what a sophisticated colours and what a classy arrangements.  Not this time, just cheerful bunches but the fragrance is invariably delihtful for the nose.

Every few days I go into the garden with my scissors and cut off all the flowering sweet peas, during cutting I count them, I cannot resist.  Sometimes there are 40, sometimes more than 100 and sometimes more than 200. I give them away and fill a lot of vases.

Snarf is like our grandchildren, when it's baking time, he wants to lick the mixing bowl. When he hears the mixer, he is like the heads and waits impatiently till I am finished.

Een aardbeientaart met slagroom voor het weekend.

Strawberry cake with cream for the weekend.

So that was nice, the bottom is almost licked from the bowl, but now I need to wipe my mouth.......
the seat cushions on the porch will do, oh nooo.

Symbols of sweet peas : blissful and delicate pleasure and also "goodbye"

The name sweet pea is beleived to have first been used by the poet Keats (1795-1821). Sweet peas were very popular in the late 1800s and are often considered the floral emblem for Edwardian England. Sweet peas were an important part of floral arrangements for every wedding and dinner party at that time. Dried petals of sweet peas was also one of the most important ingredients for potpourris.

"Here are sweet peas, on tiptoe for a flight,
with wings of gentle flush o'er delicate white,
And taper fingers catching at all things,
To bind them all about with tiny rings."
