ECHTE WINTERS, BESTAAN ZE NOG? - REAL WINTERS, DO THEY STILL EXIST?

Vanmorgen in de tuin  /  This morning in the garden.

Ice Scene with mill (1856) - Andreas Schelfhout

A real winter? I'm afraid we have not had a real winter the last few years. I'm so sorry to say, because I prefer snow and ice far above the drizzly, muddy wintermonths we have now.
Beyond expectation this morning showed a little bit of winter with temperatures just below zero. There even was a thin layer of ice on the canal in front of our house, the first time this winter.
This is in contrast with last Sunday, when it was raining all day.  So it was nice that we had chosen that day to visit the exhibition 'Real winters' in the beautiful Teylers museum, the oldest museum of our country. After coffee and cake with our friends, we drove together to Haarlem where we entered the world of real winters.  I'm so happy these winters still exist in our 19th-century Dutch paintings.

The 'little Schelfhouts' were my favorites. As described in the museum, Andreas Schelfhout was one of the most celebrated and influential landscape painters of his day. When he noticed that he was having more success with his ice scenes than with landscapes or other subjects, he decided to specialize in this sub-genre.
No one could convey a wintry atmosphere better than Schelfhout: glistening yet-black ice, sharp skating tracks.  I think it's funny that he expressly confined himself to happy scenes, in pleasant sunny winter weather, no one ever stumbles, let alone falls through the ice. Actually a pitty, the paintings should be even more exciting. Falling through the ice is not needed, that's too scary but to see a fall on the ice on a painting must be hilarious. This also happens in real life. I had lots of crashes on the ice, also with unpleasant consequences. From this you will understand that I'm (still) rather wild and not afraid to fall, however, considering my age it's time to be more careful.

Schelfhout's Romantic style was inspired by that of 17th century masters like Ruisdael and Van Goyen. His winterlandscapes and those of his many pupils were so popular that they were affectionately referred to, even during his lifetime, as 'little Schelfhouts'.

Wood gathering men by a push sledge on a frozen polder canal (1826) - Andreas Schelfhout.
Above painting was my favorite on this special winter exhibition.

This is a totally different style of painting but also very pleasant to look at. As was mentioned under the painting: 'You are almost moving with the rhythme of the skaters'.

Above and below are parts of the large painting Winter landscape (1837) of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862).
Koekkoek was one of the most talented landscape painters in his time.

After watching the 'Real Winters' paintings, the halls with own collections and the building, we had a pleasant lunch in Haarlem. We finished this enjoyable day with our friends and a glass of Glühwein on the 'Real Winters'; on the windows the rain clattered.......

Back to own garden. How changeable is the weather. Although we had a lot of rain the last months, we also had wonderful days with sun and high temperatures or like today sun and lower temperatures. One thing is a fact, the garden is wet and muddy. This morning was not so bad by frost but in the afternoon it's soggy again and I'm soaking on my wellies in the grass.

It should be nice to keep this weather for some time, but after Thursday it will be again like autumn with regular rain and a strong southwest wind. Oh yeah....the garden can wait.

BUITEN KOUD, MAAR BINNEN BEGINT DE LENTE - COLD OUTSIDE, BUT AT HOME SPRING IS COMING.

Again some early morningwalk photos, I only wonder why they are all so blue, was my camera depressive of the cold?  Or was it the darkness in combination with cold? It was still 2 days before 'Blue Monday', so too early for that kind of silly things.  I don't know but I like the blue colour. It represents the sphere as it was, the silence, the quietness, the bare bedewed branches in a white landscape. Than a herd of honking geese is flying over in V-shape, this means there is more frost in the air. Under the shrubs small birds are pattering, looking for food. Than my eye is catching a redwing, these birds are here only in winter. Carefully I try to approach the bird to make a picture, but again and again, the redwing is whisking away when I'm there. All right I shall leave him alone on this gloomy morning.

Fresh snow has fallen. A shame about the ice which is covered now with a thin layer of snow. Yesterday, my husband told me some men were skating on the lakes, so in the early afternoon I went there.  Brrrrr, a hard icy wind blew over the lakes.  When I was on the landing place to put on my skates I was almost alone, except some viewers and undecided who braved the cold wind.  I looked around and saw far away just 4 men skating. I looked and hesitated, it began to snow again, more and more,  than I turned abruptly and was very rapidly home by the fire.  Still I feel myself an old dullard, but there will be many more chances this week,

Outside it's even by day-time minus 6 degr., but at home spring is slowly coming. Last week when frost arrived, I transported all my tubs and pots with springbulbs outof the cold greenhouse to the heated conservatory. Haha, it's not a beautiful still life in the conservatory now, I almost cannot walk in there of the pots on the floor, also crammed between other plants on the sill and on the shelves of the open cupboard. I hope this will not be for long.  On the table I have my hyacinths on glasses, after the 1st of January I brought them inside from the basement where they stood on a dark spot.  When I first saw them they had white stumps like witloof. Apparently it had been too warm for the bulbs in the basement.  After a week in the light conservatory, they had recovered and at the moment they are almost all in bloom.
After switching them on the table, I put the lilac ones in another room.  I poored tea in my huge teacups bought on a market in Limoges, France when we were there on holidays and we had home-baked mini-cupcakes with pink hearts.  Despite of the cold and snow, we had another lovely Sunday afternoon!
