DE EERSTE ROZEN / FIRST ROSES

Slowly but surely roses are starting to show their blooms, one of the first in our garden is Rosa banksiae 'Lutea'.

In this time of year there is so much to show and/or to write about the garden and also outside the garden that I do not know which subject to choose and where to start, resulting in postponement.  Daily blogging is not an option too, with so much additional gardening as weeding, mowing, fertilizing, watering, planting and transplanting of seedlings and cuttings, and putting sometimes heavy containerplants on their summer place, there is not enough time left. This all together is called gardening.
After much doubt I chose for my first flowering roses.

At the foot of these roses are still some Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus flowering and Clematis 'Guernsey Cream' is crawling up. A more or less accidentally successful combination of shapes and colours.

I'm very pleased Rosa banksiae 'Lutea'  is doing so well so far. This not so hardy rose was for years in the greenhouse flowering in April with her pale yellow flowers.  After about 10 years she gave up and died slowly.  Before that, I took cuttings which rooted all and after a year I put them all outside against the fence on the roadside. A number of them did not survive first winter outside by heavy frost. But next two very mild winters have caused this wonderfull bloom.

This is the inside of the fence in the garden, where a young Acer pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantissimum'  just shows her foliage.

And this is outside, along the road, next to the gate Rosa 'Étoile de Hollande' starts flowering.

Rosa 'Canary Bird' was the first one, she shows her blooms already 3 weeks.

The climbing rose 'Guinée' is not the easiest rose, she likes pampering and warmth.  After two failures this one grows very well and I think I've found the right spot because she is also very early with her flowers.  Unfortunately the pictures don't show the deep red colour, I'll try it again on a rainy day.

Thank you very much for the nice comments on my previous post about Bluebells.
I wish all my readers and followers a wonderful week with possibly lots of garden pleasure!

BOSHYACINTEN - BLUEBELLS HERE, BLUEBELLS THERE, BLUEBELLS EVERYWHERE

'Bluebells', a confusing affair.
There are Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) and wild bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta).  In the English language these wild hyacinths are called bluebells, does not that sound much more melodic than wild wood hyacinth?

The Spanish wood hyacinths are often erroneously called bluebells, but these are slightly different.

Some notable differences:

The Hyacinthoides hispanica has pale blue flowers produced on all sides of an upright stem. This Spanish bluebell has blue pollen and no fragrance.

The Hyacinthoides non-scripta has dark flowers nodding to one side. Flowers are more tubular. This bluebell has creamy white pollen and is fragrant.

I really do love them both and without thinking, I planted in the past both varieties. This resulted in hybrids, in England  known as Hyacinthoides x massartiana.
This is not so strange for at Wikipedia I read the following:
"The plants occurring in The Netherlands are usually interpreted as resulting of hybridizing of Hyacinthoides non-scripta and Hyacinthoides hispanica, both of which occur probably not in pure form anymore."

Despite the wide distribution of the wild bluebell in Europe and the USA, it reaches its greatest densities in the British Isles, where "bluebell woods", dominated by the Hyacinthoides non-scripta, are a familiar sight in spring.
The last five years we visited England in May and took many bluebell photos. These perennials growing from bulbs are so wonderfully sprawling as a blue carpet under deciduous trees and open spaces.

- Here together with wood anemones -

The Bluebells

We stood upon the grass beside the road,
At  wood's fence, to look among the trees.
In windless noon the burning May-time glowed.
Gray, in young green, the beeches stood at ease.
Light speckled in the wood as left it dim:
They lay a blue in which no ship could swim,
Within whose peace no water ever flowed.

Within that pool no shadow ever showed;
Tideless was all that mystery of blue.
Out of eternities man never knew
A living growth man never reaped nor sowed
Snatched in the dim its fitness from the hour
A miracle unspeakable of flower
That tears in the heart's anguish answered-to.

How paint it; how describe? None has the power.
It only had the power upon the soul
To consecrate the spirit and the hour,
To light to sudden rapture and console,
Its beauty called a truce: forgave: forgot
All the long horror of man's earthly lot,
A miracle unspeakable of flower
In a green May unutterably blue.

                                - John Masefield (1878-1967) -

Snarf gaat altijd mee en is nadrukkelijk aanwezig.

Snarf is always with us and is empathically present.

The real wild bluebell native in England.

During bad weather days past week I have been busy in the greenhouse.  Potting more seedlings, puting container plants outside, filling hanging baskets and sorting and cleaning up.
A blackbird thought it to be too stormy to make a nest in the garden, so they made a little nest in the clematis in the greenhouse. Fortunately there is a gap below the door so that they can go in and out when the door is closed.  Today there are two little eggs in the nest.
Yesterday I made it a bit cozy, picking Spanish bluebells and some branches of the snowball of which the flowers are still greenish. Afterwards we had a nice cup of tea.

"Sacred watcher, wave thy bells!
Fair hill flower and woodland child!
Dear to me in deep green dells -
Dearest on the mountains wild -"

This pretty coffeepot I found in a thriftshop for 2 Euros.

I wish you all a lovely new week with hopefully a lot of outdoor fun!

After my short story about the visit to the Planetarium of Franeker and some 'stinzen' gardens, I kept the best for today : THE COWS.
This is Friesland at its best:  green pastures, Dutch skies, water and wind.

In Friesland ziet men over het algemeen kop-hals-romp boerderijen.

In Friesland there are mainly head-neck-torso farms.  The name comes from the shape of this type of farm, which is reminiscent of a lying cow.

.-.-.-.-.

This is the mound of Hogebeintum, with 8,80 m. above sealevel, the highest mound of our country. Mounds are artificial hills, raised to have a dry place at high water.  Sometimes complete villages were built on these so-called refuge islands.  Mounds were used until the rise of the dikes, after 1800 many mounds are totally or partly leveled for the fertile soil.
The mound of Hogebeintum was inhabited from 600 BC. The village of this mound, is already mentioned in the 9th century.

From this side, I thought the mound with the church on top was most pretty, there are houses on the other side.  Even at midday the landscape radiates tranquility, the church as a landmark and haven on top, sheep satisfied, peaceful loungng in the grass on the slope.

En route we come across a sign direction Bartlehiem,  Aha, now we are here, we want to see the famous bridge of the 'Eleven Cities tour'.   During this skating tour (only in winters with heavy frost) along 11 towns we follow the skaters on television, passing this bridge twice before they go to the last grueling kilometers to Leeuwarden.

Although only late April, it was striking to see few cows in the meadows. However, we saw at several farms large new open stables next to the existing farm.

I will and cannot judge, but I am very sorry that fewer and fewer cows are seen in the pasture.
For natural behavior and other advantages grazing is good for cows.  Also rain, sun, herding behavior and droppings are part of nature of these animals. Despite the comfortable new stables for milkcows, it can go wrong when the animals remain inside summer and winter. When they don´t go out anymore, in the future cattle will be breeded which cannot go out in the pastures anymore, purely because they are no longer accustomed to it.  This is unfortunate for the landscape, the meadowbirds and the biodiversity, but it is especially bad for the cows that are built to graze.  Cows are unique grazers by their lower teeth, long rough tongue and four stomachs. Behavior they can not practise in the stable.

Heel veel water en heel veel vogels  /  Lots of water and lots of birds

This is Vijverzathe in Jelsum, a farm for sale.
Times go by, memories remain.

This was once the farm of Rigtje Boelstra and Jan Nannes Wassenaar, cattle breeder from Jelsum. The couple was very successful in cattle breeding and their cattle belonged for decades to the absolute top of the Frisian cattle breeding. Their farm, Vijverzathe, was visited by many visitors in high positions from home and abroad, highlighted by the visit of the Shah of Persia.
The couple travelled a lot and their cattle showed and sold on almost all continents.
In the early sixties of last century also my parents had descendants of the famous sire Jelsumer Gerard Wouter.

I finish this time with a cow poem of the Dutch poet Gerrit Achterberg (1905-1962), he compares the poet to a cow, which swallows the grass of reality, chews the cud and eventually produces sweet lyrical milk.
It is translated by David Colmer, 2008.

The poet as a Cow

Grass.....and having grazed,
lying here on folded legs
with eyes amazed
that I don't need to take a step
yet find my mouth as full
as wehen I walked the field.
It must have slipped my mind again
what kind of animal I am.
Reflected in ditches when I drink,
I see my head and think:
why is that cow so upside down?
In time the gate I use to rub against
grows old and grey and greasy smooth.
I'm shy of frogs and children and they
of me: they find my tongue too rough.
The farmer's milking is such bliss,
I overlook his avarice.
Quite unaware, I dream in mist at night
that I'm a calf, resting by its mother's side.
