Now we are already in the second half of January and no winter to be seen. Shall we skip that now and silently switch to spring? You could almost go hoping when you walk around in the garden. The snowdrops show white points so I got rid of fallen leaves and twigs around the spots last week. The Hellebores have formed thick buds everywhere and some show already their floral beauty. On the sunny moments of the last few days I took some pictures of what is seen in the garden at this moment.

Prunus subhirtella autumnalis 'Rosea' bloeit onafgebroken vanaf november.

Hamamelis 'Jelena'

And as always Snarf is there, staring at his 'dachshund'. There must be thrown,so that he can do his racecourse round.

A moment later we see our neighbour chickens are visiting us and Snarf disappears immediately through the open kitchen door to hide himself under my desk, the coward.

EERSTE ZAAISELS VAN 2014 - FIRST SOWINGS OF 2014

It is a good custom to sow something on the first day of the year, that is why I inspected the contents of my seedbox.   There were still several half-full packets of cress (Lepidium sativum). When our children were young, they had a small garden on the border of the kitchen garden where they were allowed to sow their own chosen seeds. Cress is easy for children so they sowed in spring their name of it.  In the garden I sow no longer cress but in winter it is always fun to have cress in pots on the windowsill.  This time I sowed cress in an old but nice bowl and put this in the conservatory.  Keep the soil moist and see, within a week the cress can be cut.  We love to eat it in sandwiches and salads, particularly potatoe salad.  It is also delicious with smoked salmon or other fish. Cress contains a lot of vitamines A, B, C and minerals.

Talking about lemon, on the porch are an olive and a lemon in pot.  The lemon tree was a present from youngest daughter of a holiday to Italy. The second year the still very small tree gave 11 big lemons.
Then nothing, the tree needed all to survive in our wet and too cold climate.  Last summer there appeared a few lovely fragrant flowers and finally fruits. To our great surprise we discovered last week on the back of the plant a big yellow lemon. Almost a shame to pick it off.

I also sowed something new in an old tureen, rockett cress, I never heard of it before but it is also ready for consumption now. According to the packet the young leaves are delicious, nutty with a hint of pepper. Combines perfectly with raw ham, cream cheese, smoked salmon and in salads.  Also as a garnish for meat and pasta dishes.  Rockett cress is rich of iron and contains vitamines A and C.

Today I made paprika soup to a recipe of a paprika nursery.  In the glasshouses behind our house there grow paprikas too.

The recipe is as follows :

- Use 6 to 8 yellow or orange paprikas for a thick soup.
- Wash the paprikas, cut the seeds out and cut them into small pieces.
- Bake the paprikas with a chopped onion glassy, until they are soft.
- Make one liter of vegetable or chicken broth.
- Add the warm broth to the paprikas and let it simmer for a while.
- Then put the hand blendere in the soup.
- The result is a nice smooth soup.
- Add 200 ml cream and salt and pepper to taste.
- I garnish the soup with Rucola cress.

I also sowed some lettuce on the windowsill but that is just beginning to come.  When I make the picture I see outside on the porch 'whitefeather', a blackbird with a white spot on the back. This is our home blackbird and easily to recognize.

For the afternoon tea I baked muffins that I covered with a layer of cottage cheese with cream and cane sugar.
I also got already some bulbglasses from the dark basement to the light conservatory.

Eén van mijn favoriete theeserviezen, Hutschenreuther Zwiebelmuster.

One of my favorite tea sets, Hutschenreuther Zwiebelmuster.

And Snarf stares mouthwatering to the boss:  'I want a muffin'

JELENA

When I returned from my dogwalk this morning I did my usual stroll through the garden.
Sofar we have a very mild winter, actually it's not a winter at all and when the sun is coming through it is a joy to photograph the flowering Prunus autumnalis, the Vibrunum bodnantense and the Hamamelis against the blue sky. When I put the pictures on the computer I discovered that in the first week of January 2013 we had the same beautiful weather, the pictures were almost identical. The mentioned tree and shrubs I described in detail on my blog in that time so I don't want to lapse into repetition.
This morning I carefully cut some branches of the Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' and put them in stone jars together with dried flowers of the Aruncus dioicus.

The Hamaelis x intermedia 'Jelena' is named after Jelena de Belder. Baroness Jelena de Belder (1925-2003) was one of the great garden ladies of the Low Countries.  Together with her late husband, Robert de Belder, she built the Arboretum of Kalmthout into one of the most beautiful garden and plant collections of Europe. Dozens of famous botanists from all over the world were with her in the learning.

She wrote a book about her Arboretum of Kalmthout which previously appeared under the title of 'Life starts in autumn'.  It is both a history book, a botanical work and a poetical walk through the Arboretum, where every season has its own color palette, plant wealth and ambiance. The result is a lovely book about a dream garden.

Jelena de Belder was talking about nature, plants and gardens with an enormous passion, a nervous and catching enthusiasm. Early fifties of the last century Jelena Kovacic alighted as young horticultural in Arboretum Kalmthout. She was in love with the beautiful plant collection of the old nursery and with one of the owners, Robert de Belder.  In this book she looks fifty years later to a happy life with plants. The Arboretum was famous far beyond the country's boundaries for its exceptional collections of rare plants they searched for all over the world.  Especially the beautiful witch hazel collection barely knows her equal.

The witch hazel spread an indescribably wonderful fragrance in the house, but I think they're out in the sun at its best.
