Toen ik vanmorgen terugkwam van mijn hondenwandeling deed ik zoals gewoonlijk een rondje tuin. Tot nu toe hebben we een zeer zachte winter, eigenlijk is het helemaal geen winter en als de zon dan even schijnt is het een feest om de bloeiende Prunus autumnalis, de Viburnum bodnantense en de Hamamelis tegen de blauwe lucht te fotograferen. Toen ik de foto's op de computer gezet had, kwam ik tot de ontdekking dat we vorig jaar in de eerste week van januari ook van dat mooie weer hadden, de foto's waren zelfs bijna identiek. De genoemde boom en heesters heb ik toen uitgebreid beschreven op mijn blog precies een jaar geleden dus wil ik niet in herhaling vervallen.
Dit keer heb ik voorzichtig wat takjes van de Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' afgesneden en in enkele stenen kruiken gezet samen met wat verdroogde bloeiwijzen van de Aruncus dioicus.
When I returned from my dogwalk this morning I did my usual stroll through the garden.
Sofar we have a very mild winter, actually it's not a winter at all and when the sun is coming through it is a joy to photograph the flowering Prunus autumnalis, the Vibrunum bodnantense and the Hamamelis against the blue sky. When I put the pictures on the computer I discovered that in the first week of January 2013 we had the same beautiful weather, the pictures were almost identical. The mentioned tree and shrubs I described in detail on my blog in that time so I don't want to lapse into repetition.
This morning I carefully cut some branches of the Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' and put them in stone jars together with dried flowers of the Aruncus dioicus.
De Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' is genoemd naar Jelena de Belder. Barones Jelena de Belder (1925-2003) was een van de grote tuindames van de Lage Landen. Samen met wijlen haar man, Robert de Belder, bouwde ze het Arboretum van Kalmthout uit tot een van de mooiste tuinen en plantencollecties van Europa. Tientallen beroemde botanisten van over de hele wereld waren bij haar in de leer.
The Hamaelis x intermedia 'Jelena' is named after Jelena de Belder. Baroness Jelena de Belder (1925-2003) was one of the great garden ladies of the Low Countries. Together with her late husband, Robert de Belder, she built the Arboretum of Kalmthout into one of the most beautiful garden and plant collections of Europe. Dozens of famous botanists from all over the world were with her in the learning.
Zij heeft een boek geschreven over haar Arboretum van Kalmthout wat eerder verscheen onder de titel 'Het leven begint in de herfst'. Het is tegelijk een geschiedenisboek, een botanisch werk en een poëtische wandeling door het Arboretum, waarbij ieder seizoen zijn eigen kleurenpallet, plantenrijkdom en sfeer vertoont. Het resultaat is een heerlijk boek over een droom van een tuin.
She wrote a book about her Arboretum of Kalmthout which previously appeared under the title of 'Life starts in autumn'. It is both a history book, a botanical work and a poetical walk through the Arboretum, where every season has its own color palette, plant wealth and ambiance. The result is a lovely book about a dream garden.
Jelena de Belder praatte over de natuur, planten en tuinen met een enorme passie, een nerveuze gedrevenheid en een aanstekelijk enthousiasme. Begin jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw streek Jelena Kovacic als jonge Sloveense tuinbouwkundige neer in het Arboretum van Kalmthout. Zij werd er verliefd op de prachtige plantencollectie van de oude kwekerij en op een van de eigenaars, Robert de Belder. In dit boek blikt zij vijftig jaar later terug op een gelukkig leven met planten. Het Arboretum werd tot ver buiten de landsgrenzen beroemd om zijn uitzonderlijke collecies van vaak zeldzame planten, die zij overal ter wereld uitzochten. Vooral de prachtige Hamamelis-collectie kent amper haar gelijke.
Jelena de Belder was talking about nature, plants and gardens with an enormous passion, a nervous and catching enthusiasm. Early fifties of the last century Jelena Kovacic alighted as young horticultural in Arboretum Kalmthout. She was in love with the beautiful plant collection of the old nursery and with one of the owners, Robert de Belder. In this book she looks fifty years later to a happy life with plants. The Arboretum was famous far beyond the country's boundaries for its exceptional collections of rare plants they searched for all over the world. Especially the beautiful witch hazel collection barely knows her equal.
De toverhazelaar takken verspreiden een onbeschrijfelijk heerlijke geur in huis, toch vind ik ze buiten in de zon op zijn mooist.
