LANDGOED DORDWIJK - VILLA AUGUSTUS

Last week we had a guided tour on Country Estate Dordwijk with our gardenclub the Leprechauns.
Dordwijk is an estate in Dubbeldam south of Dordrecht and was built around 1635.  At the entrance is a castle farm, partly still dated from the foundation time.  Mid-nineteenth century this country seat was transformed into a park in English style by architect J.D. Zocher jr.  In that time they put some new buildings in the park :  Villa Dordwijk in 1855, an orangery in 1861, a gardener's house in 1861 and a few barns.

The Orangery and Villa Dordwijk are built in eclectic style, a combination of features of different movements. The buildings blend perfect with the park landscaped by Zocher.

This statue of Heracles or Herculus (Latin) is close to the entrance, he wears a lion's head as a helmet and a lion skin as cloak.  Heracles is a person from Greek mythology and a real hero.  He became famous for the 12 difficult labours he performed in order of king Eurystheus.  The first labour was slaying the Nemean lion.  He did not succeed to wound the animal with a club or arrows, but at last he strangled the lion with his bare hands.  From that time he wore the impervious skin as an armor.

A pear berceau, unfortunately not yet blossoming.

The orangery which has been restored to its former glory, with lemons hanging on the trees inside.

In het park majestueuze beukenbomen (Fagus sylvatica).

Majestic beech trees in the park.

It is a bad picture, yet I want to show you the Sequoia, which is not common in the Netherlands. This tree is a native of California where they grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Remarkably, the bark is soft and can be pushed easily.
The cones are egg shaped, 5-8 cm long and hanging on long pedicels at the main twigs. There were enough of them on the ground, so we picked some to grow our own Sequoia, haha, but....that is not easy at all.
The Sequoia has a very thick bark and a high crown,  so that by forest fire, the fire can not affect the main parts of the tree.  For propagation it is even necessary that seeds are partially burned.

Here we are in the 'Victorian Kitchen Garden', with a greenhouse, herbgarden, cutting garden and where useful plants are grown.

Hier sla..... / here lettuce......

and again lettuce, bigger ones, grown for the restaurant of Villa Augustus, which is of the same owners.
Here we are almost at the end of the tour and are going up to Villa Augustus for lunch.

Here we have arrived at Villa Augustus in Dordrecht, a hotel/restaurant in an old water tower at the 'Wantij', a waterway from the Biesbosch at the Merwede to Dordrecht.
Villa August and her gardens are always attractive, I have been there several times in different seasons.

And this is the backyard of Villa Augustus, a real Italian garden with a long pond and at the end through the gate a beautiful view on the magnificent crossing of rivers.

Maas en Waal komen samen / Rivers Meuse and Waal come together.

We walk back via the Italian garden to the side and front of Villa Augustus, with greenhouses, a flowergarden and kitchengarden.  The restaurant is as it were in the middle of the kitchengarden.

O noooo, what does the cat of the house...........there in the middle of the prepared vegetable beds......

Voor het gebouw bloeiende Prunus bomen.

In front of the building flowering cherry trees.

The artichokes are very large for the time of year, they will have been drawn inside I think.

En hier komt de zeekool op / Here sea kale is coming out of the soil.

Dit stond buiten op de muur geschreven.

This was written on the wall of Villa Augustus outside:

Augustus let spring come
and pass into summer,
but also in autumn and winter
Augustus shall remain as a tower
by 'Vlij' and 'Wantij'.

And then we went inside to indulge ourselves with soup, salads and wine.  I had a delicious swordfish salad and so pretty, the salads had a topping of violets.

  6. The garedens are so beautiful. It is amazing at how well kept they are. Even more astonishing is the age of everything. I visited Coole Park in Ireland where poet WB Yeats at one time hung out along with other Enlgish literary greats with his Patron Lady Coole. House long destroyed and the land now a park where visitors can linger. There, too, are sequoias imported in the 19th century from California. Grand trees, indeed.

I love the kitchen garden........I only wish I had one here :)

Trees are stunning.......majestic beech trees need a lot of space to truly appreciate them. No wonder that are always found on large estates.

The reflection in the pond makes a lovely image.

  18. Thank you for the "rondleiding." I don't remember ever going to Dordrecht, but now I have a reason to go there. What a beautiful villa and garden! Good luck with the tree sowing. And I just noticed your Black Tulip magnolia in your previous post. Monty Don showcased his new tree in last Friday's Gardener's World. We have a new Slingbox so that my Dutch hubby can see the Dutch news and I can watch the real BBC programs! Who would have ever thought? Now out to take cuttings from our luscious boxwoods to replace the 150 dead plants from last dry hot fall.. Have a great Sunday evening. Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  31. What a beautiful place to visit! The orangerie is magnificent, as is the long pond and formal gardens. And the flower gardens were quite pretty. Don't blame that poor cat if she wants to use those nice soft fluffy beds for what they are obviously intended to be use for: a nicely prepared litter box!

  39. Dear Janneke, sounds like you had a fabulous day at the country estate Dordwijk and the Villa Augustus with your garden club. The orangery of the country estate is architectually one of the finest that I have seen so far. Just beautiful! I love the salads in the greenhouse. They look so crunchy and fresh and ready to eat. It is great that the Villa Augustus restaurant is growing its food in their own gardens close by. I had read about this hotel/restaurant in another blog already and it seems to be a quite outstanding place. If I ever travel to the Netherlands I would love to visit it and have lunch there myself! Thanks for this great blog entry!

  40. I'm so glad you took us with you on your tour of this lovely garden! It is interesting to see the differences and similarities between large gardens here and in Holland. The picture of the beech tree is fantastic and I love the view from the Italian garden down to the rivers. (Oh dear I am always attracted to the water aren't I?) The campsite you stayed in some many years ago is just up the lane from us. It is bad enough being in a house when the wind is strong I'm surprised you didn't get blown away too! Sarah x
