DE TUIN BEGIN DECEMBER - THE GARDEN IN THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER.

My end of the month gardenpost is this time a beginning of the month post. The last days of November were too bad to make photos outside. We got rain and storm over us. Today and yesterday fortunately a little better, but still rainy and gray but normal for the time of year. First photo I took from the stairs of the verandah, as you can see the Oleanders are still outside and as long as we have no severe frost they stay there.
Despite wind and rain there are some reasonable looking roses, these are the super strong ones, like Rosa 'Leonardo da Vinci', who always shows some flowers from early summer to late autumn. As most of the Meilland roses they unfortunately have no fragrance.

On the left of the path is Flora with a background of ivy and in summer the rose 'Guirlande d 'Amour'. On the right side you look through the pyramids of boxwood to the lawn. I'm glad there are rather a lot of evergreens in the garden so that the wintergarden is not one and all sadness. As you can see the blackbirds have not yet picked all holly berries, perhaps there are enough left for my Christmas decorations the coming weeks.

Somber weer, sombere foto's.

Gloomy weather, gloomy pictures. The Larix has almost lost all needles, some roses however, still have their leaves and the rose 'Peaudouce', even shows a nice bud.

There were still some beautiful late Delphinium flowers, the weather made an abrupt end to this.

A thick layer of Ginkgo leaves, among which these green ferns show nicely.

Mijn vriend houdt me altijd in de gaten  -  My friend always keeps an eye on me.

And sure enough there is still a beautiful neat rose of 'Winchester Cathedral'.

Among th many withered Hydrangeas are still beautiful specimens.

Viburnum tinus is the shrub of the month, with buds, flowers and berries.

Witch hazel 'Jelena'  is pretty but too early blooming.

A strange sensation, roses and wicth hazels flowering at the same time. This is Rosa 'Glamis Castle' next to the witch hazel.

A look into the greenhouse where one of the Primula auriculas shows a flower.

Where bric-à-brac and baskets are hanging on the beams.

Along the canal are still many pretty looking Hydrangeas.

Okay Snarf, I'm coming, we have done our round again and go inside.

Inside I have the high whatnot with Hydrangeas, next week it's going back to the greenhouse to make room for Christmas decorations.

Help, ik ontdekte een groene stinkwants.

Help, I discovered a green stinkbug.

ITALIAANSE VILLA'S EN PLATTELAND - ITALIAN VILLAS AND COUNTRYLIFE (2)

VILLA ADRIANA

From Villa d´Este to Villa Hadriana is only a short ride. Villa Hadriana is quite different, these are the remains of almost an entire city. as this complex consists mainly of ruins, there is a special atmosphere and is quite impressive. Fortunately the weather showed from her good side and we walked quite a bit because the terrain is mega-sized.  Cyclamen flowering in corners near old walls gave colour to the whole.

Villa Adriana was built from 117 AD as residence of Emperor Hadrian.  It is the most important and most complicated residence from ancient Rome on an terrain of almost 120 ha. They built here for Emperor Hadrian the grandest buildings he had seen on his travels. It included an imperial palace, bath houses, libraries, a sea theater, temples and extensive gardens full of art. If we can believe the stories his favorite place was the Roman Canopus, a marble pond surrounded by columns and statues.

It is likely that the emperors who succeeded Hadrian kept coming to Tivoli.  In any case they found busts of Antonius Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus and Caracalla. At the end of the sixth century the Villa was forgotten and fell into ruin field. In the Middle Ages there were still artists drawing sketches and lateron  in 1461 Flavio Biondo identified the ruins as the residence of Emperor Hadrian as the first one since ancient times, described in the Historia Augusta.

From the 16th century numerous excavations started, first by architect Pirro Ligorio who was working on Villa d'Este, he could use some marble from Villa Hadriana.  Also Renaissance architects like Raphael and Borromini were enthusiastic and especially statues and mosaics were very popular by major collectors of antiques. Until in the 19th century there was plundered systematically.

Finally, in 1870 the terrain was taken over by the Italian State, which had carried out excavations whereby they exposed the total area of the complex. Now there is also invested in a better protection of the terrain, one is not allowed to walk anywhere. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of mysteries because archaeologists have not succeeded so far to identify the function of the many buildings of the Villa. There are many stories but when you walk around there is much more left to your imagination.

- waiting for cat to come out -

In the meantime it is late in the afternoon and time to go back to Rosa dei Venti (our guesthouse).
It's getting dark early in November, yet we take a scenic route. Initially this is going fine, we drive through countryside with beautiful skies and beautiful evening lights, but that's the silence before the storm. Soon we see the first flashes of light above the hills and yes, thunder is following. After a while the storm is cracking apart, torrential rain, darkness, crackling and thunder, and yes...of course we take the wrong road.  After a tiring drive of 3 hours(!) we arrive on a path full of bumps and holes at the sheepfarm in Mazzano Romano, where our hostess throws some extra logs on the fire, nice and warm.

The other morning we see this peaceful scene from our room.

Sheep with young lambs stay near the farm.

These are all going out to the lands in the morning, guarded by 3 Italian Maremma dogs and come back home in the evening.

Sunday afternoon, a watery sun is shining through the clouds. F. asks if I go with him walking with Snarf.  Yes, I like to go and grab my camera.  In the mornings I mostly leave it at home because Snarf demands all my attention. Arrived behind the glasshouses, F. points to the left where dark skies are looming in sharp contrast to the brightly lit grass. Then we look behind us and see ominous rain veils raging by the wind. However, it is not yet raining where we are walking.

Snarf runs cheerfully ahead in the sunlight coming from the right.

Then the rainbow is carefully appearing from behind the veils over the glasshouses

A cold wind picks up and the rain lashes our faces at a temperature of only 3 degr.C.
It's hard to believe weather can change so quickly, last week November was still mild at 14 degr.C.

The rainbow is becoming more visible, F. has put the camera beneath his coat against the rain.

 Two rainbows........

Then the rain is over and we are soaking wet. We return, but we have one with us who always cheerfully defies all weathers, that's our good old Snarf.

"Come on folks, throw that ball again, we can sit inside long enough before I go to sleep."

And the sun is shining behind the clouds in the blue sky.

Home again, first we have to put on dry clothes, F. puts more wood on the stove and I make us a nice cup of tea and.......all these chrysanthemums are still from own garden.
