Rosa 'Rhapsody in Blue'

De roos 'Rhapsody in Blue' is een roos die de laatste jaren hevig in de mode is.  Het is ook een prachtig heesterroos die eigenlijk in geen enkele paarsroze border zou mogen ontbreken. De 'Rhapsody in Blue' is genoemd naar een jazz nummer, gecomponeerd door Gershwin in 1924.
Deze roos is door Frank R. Cowlishaw vóór 1999 in de UK gekweekt en door Warner's Roses in 2000 geïntroduceerd. Rhapsody in Blue houdt niet zo van hitte.
Ze staat al enkele jaren in de tuin, doet het bijzonder goed en vertoonde tot nu toe geen ziektes.

The rose 'Rhapsody in Blue'  is a rose which is high fashionable the last few years.  It certainly is a beautiful shrubrose which really should be missing in any purple-pink border.  The 'Rhapsody in Blue'  is called after a composition of Gershwin in 1924.  This  rose is bred by Frank R. Cowlishaw before 1999 in the UK and introduced by Warner's Roses in 2000. Rhapsody in Blue does not like hot weather. 
She is already in the garden for some years, is growing very well and showed no diseases until today.

Rosa 'Waltztime'

De roos 'Waltztime' (synonniem Saint Exupéry) valt ook in de categorie rozen die een blauwige zweem vertonen.  Het is een theeroos die niet hoger dan 80 cm wordt. Is gekweekt door Delbard in 1961. Er wordt vermeld dat ze zilverachtige mauve getinte bloemen krijgen en dat klopt. De bloemen zijn bijna onnatuurlijk mooi.
Waltztime heb ik pas afgelopen herfst aangeplant, dus ik kan over groei en ziekte gevoeligheid nog niet oordelen, ze draagt nu haar eerste bloem die best mooi is.  Wel heb ik ze verkeerd geplant want ze staat vlak naast een hoog wordende Salvia guaranitica, waarvan ik dacht dat deze de winter niet overleefd zou hebben. Op de foto zie je het opdringende blad van de Salvia. Ik denk dat ik de roos in november een betere plek zal moeten geven.

The rose 'Waltztime'  (syn. Saint Exupéry) also falls in the category of roses that have a blue tinge. It is a tea rose, growing not higher than 80 cm.  Bred by Delbard, France in 1961.  There is indicated that she gets silvery mauve flowers and that is right. The flowers almost are unnaturally beautiful.
Waltztime is one of my last bought roses, so I cannot judge about growth and health. At this moment she shows her first pretty looking flower.  All right I planted her on the wrong spot, she is growing together with a Salvia guarantica which will be very large. I thought this Salvia had not survived last winter but it is growing better than ever.  On the above picture you don't see the leaves of roses but the obtruding leaves of the Salvia which will flower later in the season. I think I have to move the rose in November to a better spot in the garden.

Rosa 'Blue River'

Ook 'Blue River' is een nieuweling in mijn assortiment.  Afgaande op de gevulde bloemen zou je niet raden dat dit ook een thee hybride is. Ze is nu ongeveer 60 cm. hoog en heeft één bloem die heerlijk geurt.  Ze is in 1984 door Kordes veredelt en heeft inmiddels al vele geurprijzen gewonnen. Zij wordt een 'blauwe' thee hybride genoemd, maar de kleur is wezenlijk mauve in het hart met donkerroze randen.

Rosa 'Blue River' is a new one in my assortment too.  Based on the double flowers you should not guess this is a tea hybrid.  She is now about 60 cm. high and has one heavenly scented flower. She is bred and introduced by Kordes, Germany in 1984 and won already many fragrance awards.
She is called a 'blue' tea hybrid, but the colour is substantially mauve in the heart with dark pink edges.

Rosa 'Moody Blue'

De roos 'Moody Blue' is een roos waar ik blij van word. Het is een roos met een sterke kleur en sterke uitstraling.
De kweker is Fryer, UK, die haar in 2008 introduceerde.  Deze theeroos groeit stevig rechtop tot een hoogte van zeker 80 cm. Ze geurt matig.  Het mooist van deze doorbloeiende roos zijn echter de grote opvallende bloemen met een unieke combinatie van paars, lila en lavendel tinten. In hun bloei verandert de kleur naar een warme zilver-lila tint. Ook voor deze roos is het het eerste jaar in mijn tuin, maar ik heb goede hoop dat het een topper wordt.

The rose 'Moody Blue' is a rose which makes me happy.  The rose has strong colours and is a strong appearance.
Breeder is Fryer, UK, who introduced her in 2008. This tea rose is growing vigorous to 80 cm. and produces a continuous profusion of blooms. These flowers are large and blue-lilac with the petal edges tipped with violet. As the blooms develop the colour softens, becoming a much warmer silvery-lilac shade.  It is only her first year, but I have good hope this will become a top rose in my garden. 

KONINGIN VAN DE NACHT - QUEEN OF THE NIGHT

Donderdagavond 11 juli, ik was bezig met mijn rozen blogpost te schrijven, kwam F. mijn werkkamertje binnen met onderstaande foto's op de Ipad.  De Koningin van de Nacht bloeide met wel 7 bloemen tegelijk, dat hadden we nog niet eerder meegemaakt en ik heb deze plant al heel lang. Heb het even opgezocht in oude fotoboeken, in 1982 bloeide de cactus voor het eerst in mijn kas. De cactussen die ik nu heb, zijn daar nazaten van.  Op dinsdag kwam een tuinvriendin langs en ik liet haar de cactussen zien, ik vertelde dat het nog wel een weekje zou duren voordat de volgende knoppen open zouden gaan. Dat was dus niet zo, twee dagen later 7 bloemen, daar stond ik wel van te kijken.

Thursday night July 11th, I was writing a blogpost about roses, my husband F. came into my office to show the below 2 photos on his Ipad.  The Queen of the Night was flowering with 7 flowers at the same time, that was a new experience for me because I have this plant already for a long time.  I searched for it in old photo books and found out that the cactus flowered for the first time in my greenhouse in 1982.  The cactusses which I have now, are all descendants.  On Tuesday a gardening friend came along and I showed her the Queen of the Night, I told her it should take about another week before new buds should come out.  Nothing was less true, two days later I was there to watch 7 flowers! 

Deze foto's zijn 's avonds om ongeveer 21.30 uur gemaakt, toen de bloemen zich juist geopend hadden.

These pictures were made at about 21.30 hours, when flowers had just opened. 

In een vorige post liet ik de eerste bloem van dit jaar van de Selenicereus grandiflorus (Koningin van de Nacht) zien.  Er breken wel eens stukken af van deze klimmende, kruipende bedoornde cactus en soms poot ik die opnieuw, zoals hier bij een andere cactus, de Echinocactus grusonii, ook wel schoonmoeders stoel genoemd. Er staan in dezelfde pot ook nog een paar sprieten van een Crocosmia masoranum, waarschijnlijk per ongeluk zaden in de grond gekomen. Door de jaren heen zijn we wat nonchalant geworden met deze cactus, als je het elk jaar meemaakt wordt het gewoon, terwijl het dat eigenlijk niet is.
De bloemen zijn heel groot en geuren heerlijk zoet.

In a former post I showed the first flower of this year of the Selenicereus grandiflorus (Queen of the Night).  Sometimes pieces brake off, of this climbing, crawling, spiny cactus which I plant again (not always) like here by another cactus, the Echinocactus grusonii, also called Mother-in Law's Cushion.  In the same pot are also a few leaves of a Crocosmia masoranum, probably self-seeded in the greenhouse.  Over the years we have become somewhat nonchalant with this cactus, if you see the flowers every year you get used to it.  The flowers are very large and have a very sweet fragrance.  

Hier is het een uur later, bedtijd voor ons, we blijven er niet bij zitten.

EEN PAAR ANTIEKE ROZEN - SOME OLD ROSES

De ouderwetse rozen zijn mijn favorieten en die bloeien nu volop. De geur in de tuin is, vooral in de vroege ochtend en 's avonds bedwelmend en maakt veel goed als ik uren en uren doorbreng met het afknippen van de verwelkte bloemen. Het zijn niet alleen de gevulde geurige bloemen die voor neus en oog romantiek oproepen, maar ook de Franse namen.  Zeg nu zelf Felicité Parmentier of Gloire de France klinkt toch veel beter dan Sexy Rexy of Westerland.

The old fashioned roses are my favourites and these are in full bloom at this moment.  The smell in the garden is, mainly in the early morning and in the evening almost intoxicating and that makes many good if I spend hours and hours with deadheading roses. Not only the filled fragrant flowers call the sense of romance, but also their French names. Let's be honest, Félicité Parmentier or Gloire de France sounds much better than Sexy Rexy or Westerland.

Rosa 'Tuscany superb'

De heerlijke Gallica roos 'Tuscany Superb', ook wel 'Old Velvet Rose' genoemd, staat in het paarse gedeelte van de tuin.  Deze heeft dieprode tot paarse bloemen met fluwelige blaadjes. Ze geurt licht en is reuze sterk, heeft zelden kwaaltjes, alleen als het heel lang vochtig weer is, kan er wat meeldauw ontstaan.
Zoals bijna alle oude rozen bloeit ze alleen midden in de zomer. Ze is in 1629 al beschreven door John Parkinson.

The lovely Gallica rose 'Tuscany Superb', also called 'Old Velvet Rose' is situated in the purple part of the garden.  This rose has deep red to purple flowers with velvety petals.  She has a slight scent and is very strong. I seldom noticed diseases, only when the weather is humid for a long time, mildew can occur. She flowers only in mid summer like most old roses.  It is not sure how old she is but John Parkinson described this rose already in 1629.

Rosa 'Madame Hardy'

Op de achtergrond in de boventuin staat één van mijn favorieten, de roos 'Madame Hardy'. Deze roos behoort to de groep van Damascener rozen.  Bloeit helaas ook alleen in de zomer, maar wel verschrikkelijk mooi met witte gevulde middelgrote bloemen en in het hart een groene punt.  Ze geurt heerlijk zoet en is in 1832 gekweekt door M. Hardy in Frankrijk.  De Heer Hardy was in die tijd directeur van 'Jardin Luxembourg' in Parijs en hij noemde de roos naar zijn vrouw.  Deze roos staat voor een altijdgroene taxushaag achter in de border en komt daar prachtig tot haar recht.

On the back in my upper garden grows one of my favourites, the rose 'Madame Hardy'.  This rose belongs to the group of Damask roses.  Is flowering also only in summer, but very beautifully with white filled medium seized flowers and in the centre a small green eye.  She smells deliciously sweet and is raised by M. Hardy in France in 1832.  Mr. Hardy was at that time director of 'le Jardin de Luxembourg' in Paris and when he had bred this rose he called her after his wife.  The rose is situated in front of the evergreen yew in the border and she shows beautifully on that spot.

Rosa 'Honorine de Brabant'

'Honorine de Brabant' is een Bourbonroos uit de 19e eeuw.  Er is nauwelijks iets bekend over de afkomst van deze roos, alleen dat zij door ene Rémi Tanne in 1916 is ontdekt.  De bloemen zijn tweekleurig waar ik eigenlijk niet zo van houd, maar zo'n roos mag in mijn tuin niet ontbreken en door de tijd heen, ben ik ook van deze roos gaan houden.  De bloemen hebben een witte tot licht roze ondergrond en vertonen lila vlekken en strepen. Ze zijn gevuld, komvormig en geurig. Wat wil je nog meer! Het is een grote bossige struik van bijna 2 meter hoog en net zo breed. In september bloeit ze nog een keer.  Jammer dat de bladrollers ook dol zijn op de Honorine.

'Honorine de Brabant' is a Bourbon rose from the 19th century. There is hardly known anything of her heritage, just that she has been discovered by Rémi Tanne in 1916.  The flowers are dichromatic what I do not like so much, but such a rose may not be missed in my garden and through the time, I started to love this rose too.  The flowers have a white to pale pink basis and show lilac spots and stripes.  They are filled, cupshaped and fragrant.  What else do you want!  It's a shame that 'leaf rollers' love Honorine too.

Rosa 'Félicité de Parmentier'

Ik weet dat ik het telkens over 'mijn favoriete roos' heb, maar dit is dus echt mijn nr. 1 favoriete roos!
Deze roos is van vóór 1834 en in 1836 op de markt gebracht door Louis Parmentier in België. Ze vormt een bossige struikroos tot 1.20 m. hoog waarvan de takken dichtbezet zijn met stekeltjes. Het blad is diepgroen en duidelijk generfd.   De bloemen zijn bleekroze, verkleurend tot crème. De bloemen zijn vrij rond en worden 6,5 cm. in doorsnee. Onder de Alba rozen die toch al geurend zijn, valt deze roos op door de zeer zoete lucht die zij verspreidt.
Zij staat al 23 jaar op dezelfde plaats maar krijgt de laatste jaren last van de schaduw van andere heesters en bomen die er al net zo lang staan.  Ga na de bloei stekken maken voor een beter plekje in de tuin.

I know I almost call every rose 'my favourite rose', but this is really my number 1 favourite rose! This rose is prior to 1834 and introduced by Louis Parmentier in Belgium in 1836.  She forms a bushy shrub to 1.20 m. high of which the branches are full of prickles and the leaves pale green. She has densely packed buds, opening to such full flowers of clear flesh pink. The petals reflex, a fully open flower being of exquisite beauty, shaped almost like a ball, and fading to cream at the edges.  She is spreading a very sweet fragrance.  Félicité Parmentier is already 23 years on the same spot in our garden but the last few years she is in trouble due to the shade of surrounding shrubs and trees which are grown up in these years too.  After flowering I shall make cuttings for a better place in the garden.

Rosa ´Gloire de France´

(in combination with Clematis 'Romantika'

De roos ´Gloire de France´, is weer een Gallica roos van vóór 1819.  De 7 cm. grote, lila bloemen met een lichtere rand zijn zeer gevuld, pomponachtig, vaak gekwartierd en werkelijk onweerstaanbaar, zo mooi.  Als ik deze roos zie, krijg ik trek in rozenijs.

The rose 'Gloire de France' is a Gallica rose, bred prior to 1819.  The 7 cm big, lilac-pink flowers, paling with age towards the edges, pompon-like, often quartered and truly irresistable, so beautiful. When I see this rose, I get appetite for a rose ice-cream. 

´Rosa Mousseline´

Deze roos kocht ik voor de naam, oei wat dom.  Het is een Franse mosroos uit 1855, gekweekt door Portemer en heeft nog een synoniem: Alfred de Dalmas.  Dat klinkt aanzienlijk minder romantisch.  De bloemen zijn romig roze, gevuld en komvormig en natuurlijk ook geurig.  Helaas valt de groei bij mij wat tegen en heeft ze snel last van sterroetdauw.  Ik had het wel gehad met deze roos en knipte ze in maart tot op 15 cm van de bodem na af. Ze groeide weer vrolijk op tot haar compacte vorm van bijna 1 meter hoog, bloeit weer, maar blijft lelijk blad houden.

This rose I bought for the name, oops what silly.  It is a French Moss rose, raised and introduced by Portimer in 1855 and is also often found under the name of 'Alfred de Dalmas'.  That sounds much less romantic.  The flowers are creamy pink, medium sized, cupped and of course delicately scented. Unfortunately the growth is somewhat disappointing at my place and she suffers quickly of black spot. I was fed up with this rose and cut her down to the bottom on 15 cm in March of this year. She grew again cheerfully to a compact bush of about 1 meter high, is in bloom again, but continues to have ugly leaves. 

Vandaag plukte ik wat van de besproken rozen en zette ze met enkele zeeuwse knoopjes in een klein theepotje.

Today I picked some of above mentioned roses and put them with Astrantia flowers in a small teapot.
