We hebben een week met schitterend weer achter de rug en de nieuwe week begint ook al weer goed. Als ik 's morgens wakker word en zie dat het licht begint te worden, en dan nog eens met wijd open ogen naar buiten kijk (zonder bril), word ik onrustig en wil naar buiten. Snarf is het altijd met me eens en binnen 10 minuten zijn we op pad.
Vanmorgen aan de Rotte zag ik dat, ondanks de frisse wind over het water, deze treurwilg al iets verder uitgelopen is dan de treurwilgen elders in de omgeving. Een groene waas hangt over het water waar ik mijn ogen bijna niet vanaf kan houden. Wat is het vroege voorjaar met al het nieuwe groen toch mooi......
We have a wonderful week behind us and the new week has started fine too. When I awake and see the morning light, and look through the window with wide open eyes (without spectacles) I get restless and want to go outside. Snarf always agrees with me and within ten minutes we are on our way.
This morning I saw on the lakeside this weeping willow. Despite the chilly wind over the water this tree is already a little further than other weeping willows elsewhere in the area. A soft green haze hangs over the water, I almost can't keep my eyes from the greenish wisps. How beautiful is early spring with all new green.

De wilgenkatjes bloeien nu ook volop, het lijken wel poederdonsjes.
The willow catkins are in full bloom now and look like small powderpuffs.
Thuisgekomen doen we zoals gewoonlijk nog een rondje tuin en ja, het klopt precies, als de Forsythia bloeit mogen de rozen gesnoeid worden. De Forsythia bloeit al ruim een week, dus er zijn al heel wat rozen gesnoeid. Het ging echter niet van een leien dakje, want een stukje rozenstekel vond zijn weg naar binnen bij een gewricht van mijn rechter middelvinger en dat ging lelijk zweren.
Home again we had our usual walk around the garden and yes, it's true, when the Forsythia is flowering, roses may be pruned. The forsythia is already blooming for a week, so I have pruned quite a lot of roses. However, it was not without a hitch, a piece of thorn found its way inside a joint of my middle finger which caused a nasty fester.
Magnolia stellata
I marvel about the Magnolias. We have three of them in the garden, the Magnolia stellata, the Magnolia soulangiana and the Magnolia 'Black Tulip', of which normally the Magnolia stellata flowers first. This year they start all at once.
De Magnolia stellata vertoont de laatste jaren korstmossen op de takken, de heester staat al 25 jaar in de tuin op een vrij vochtige plek. Ik vrees dat deze heester het niet lang meer maakt, maar een boomspecialist in Boskoop vertelde dat het verarming van de grond is en dat het geen kwaad kan. Toch vertrouw ik het nog niet helemaal.
The last few years the Magnolia stellata shows lichens on the branches, the shrub is already for 25 years in the garden on a rather moist spot. I fear that this shrub does not last long, but a tree specialist at Boskoop told me it is due to impoverishment of the soil and does no harm. I still do not trust it at all.
Als we geen late vorst hebben is de Magnolia soulangiana prachtig, het is een enorme struik maar staat ook al weer 23 jaar in de tuin.
If we don't get late frosts, the Magnolia soulangiana is beautiful, it is a huge shrub and already 23 years in our garden.
Dit is dan onze Magnolia 'Black Tulip'. Voor het derde jaar in onze tuin en kan nog wat jaartjes vooruit voordat ze de anderen ingehaald heeft. Op onderstaande foto kun je de maat van de heester goed zien.

Het valt op dat er dit vroege voorjaar al bijzonder veel insecten zijn. Komt dit door de zachte winter?
It is striking we have so very many insects this early spring. Is this due to the mild winter?
Vanmiddag bloemen geplukt: narcissen, heel veel verschillende narcissen en enkele zomerklokjes, de Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant'. De naam zomerklokje is wel wat misleidend want deze klokjes bloeien van maart tot mei.
Ik zette een bos in een annagroene vaas in de bibliotheek. Niet zo handig op dat trapje dus toch maar weer terug naar de kamer.
In the afternoon I picked flowers: daffodils, many different daffodils and some summer snowflakes, the Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant'. The name summer snowflake is misleading, for these snowflakes are blooming from March till May.
I put a bunch in an uranium glass vase in the library. Not so convenient on that library steps, so back to the livingroom.
Er bloeien in de tuin ook aardig wat narcissen 'Rip van Winkle', dus daar heb ik ook wat van geplukt voor een mini boeketje.
In the garden there are quite a few Narcissus 'Rip van Winkle', so I also picked some for a posy.
En in een narcissen kop en schotel zetten we nog wat kleine vroege narcisjes met Viburnum tinus bloemetjes.
And finally I put some small daffodils with flowers of Viburnum tinus in a narcissus decorated cup and saucer.
