´THE GARDENER´S GARDEN´ IS BINNEN VANDAAG. - ´THE GARDENER´S GARDEN´ IS INSIDE TODAY.

Horrible weather with rain and storm today, was not  in the mood at all for writing or photographing and preferred curling up in a chair in front of the stove with a book. But Snarf lured me out, so we did a round in the garden.  Who knows something blooms, nope, the Hellebores show some colour but flowers have not yet opened, snowdrops show white tips, it will not take long. Also many buds of the Camellias are almost bursting and then I see the flowering branches of the Hamamellis 'Jelena', very nice, but in the meantime it's raining cats and dogs again and I run into the greenhouse. Even Snarf has retreated to his doggy bed in front of the fire inside. In the greenhouse is always something to mess and fumble, but on several spots it's leaking. Nevertheless I go into the house to fetch my camera, but this is disappointing.  At the middle of the day it's too dark to make pictures without flash, so most of them failed.

In the greenhouse are some selfsown Cyclamen which I put in pots before winter, they are flowering now, that looks pretty.

But not this Cyclamen, I bought this one last week in the Plantenhal in our neighbourhood for only 1 Euro. I only went to this garden store for a few bags of potting soil and of course came home with some plants.  Honestly speaking I'm not fond of the white stripes, but it was pretty enough as an addition to the greenhouse.  Now I just did a surprising discovery: when you are sniffing the plant, the flowers smell lovely. So I was also nosing my other (garden)Cyclamens, but no those have no fragrance at all.

Another catch, a beautiful greenish rose in pot, also 1 Euro.  You wonder perhaps why I buy something like that.  Firstly I never put a rose in pot in the house, you know beforehand the rose will be short-lived. Secondly I never buy a nameless rose.  This is an experiment. I immediately gave it a bigger pot and put it in the greenhouse, there it´s not warm and the best chance for survival. In spring I put her in the open ground of the greenhouse with fertilizer. I am curious whether she will grow.  In the greenhouse I have two more roses, which are growing better inside than outside, viz. ´Schwarze Madonna´ and ´Black Baccara´, they are doing very well.

Jasmijn (Jasminum polyanthum)

Clematis cirrhosa ´Freckles´

Inside in the conservatory I have some promising  bulbs in pots and glasses and my first sowings, of which the rocket is already visible.

Our neighbour gave us this Phalaenopsis for the new year.

´The Gardener´s Garden´ is met recht binnen vandaag!

´The Gardener´s Garden´ is indeed inside today!

EEN GEWONE TUINDAG - JUST A GARDENING DAY

On my way to the greenhouse I came along a big tub with Tithonia rotundifolia. Why have I planted this wonderful Mexican annual in a tub? The bunnies...... I sowed them in spring in the greenhouse from collected seed of last year to integrate them later in the garden.  When I was going on to plant them out, the earlier planted Zinnias, hollyhocks and larkspurs were almost all eaten by the bunnies. Apparently rabbits don't like Cosmeas and snapdragons because they are in full bloom. For sure I put some Tithonias in a big tub and so they are doing great.
The Tithonia rotundifolia is a Mexican sunflower for a dry and warm climate.  They grow from 90 to 150 cm high and are attractive for bees and butterflies.

After flowering they form attractive seedheads, of which I collect the seeds after ripening.

When I go into the greenhouse, a delicious exotic fragrance meets me.  One flower of the Gardenia has opened, and it keeps me sniffing.  Fortunately there are more buds which hopefully will come into flower soon.

In the greenhouse is work to be done, the faded and wilted clematis is cut short, my handy help is already behind the wheelbarrow.  From the tangle of moldy, black clematis stems which I cut off the bars standing on the stairs, appears a dead robin, no more left than a skeleton with some feathers, so sad that this little bird has become entangled.  Against the glass of the greenhouse behind the clematis are many snails which I throw in a plastic bowl on the sowing table. Of course they climb right out again.

I grab the bowl and toss it empty with a bow across the canal, poor snails, I feel rather bad after this impulsive action.

After this warm and filthy chore I need a shower and then I'll turn back into the greenhouse with a nice cup of tea.  For the first time in my life I made a real 'selfie', haha, old and silly woman.

Tea for one and cake for............ No, this cake is fortunately not only for me, but I took it to the greenhouse for the picture.  Easy recipe, it's just a biscuit dough filled with a mixture of sour cream and cream cheese with on top blackberries, strawberries and blueberries.

I'm going to start,  you are welcome on my virtual table for this afternoon tea.

KOM IN DE KAS - COME INTO MY GREENHOUSE

Today we go to the greenhouse. In summer there is not so much to see, all container plants are outside, only the non-placeable plants remain in the greenhouse, tomatoes and sometimes cucumbers and peppers.  In recent years, I am moving into making it more cosy in summer by adding plants which need more shelter and warmth. In winter I put them in the conservatory to the house.

There is a row of my favourite sweet cherry tomatoes, also healthy tidbits for the grandchildren.

All old stuff we don't use anymore, find their way to the greenhouse, pretty empty blue bottles with selfsown blue lobelias and some small ferns are an eye catcher.  The enamel milk and water boilers are hanging on the bars.

Een zachtroze Dipladenia klimt over de etagère.

A pale pink Dipladenia is climbing over the etagere.

A small collection foliage plants (houseplants) is in the shade in the back of the greenhouse with in the middle the owlet, carved by my father from a piece of treetrunk.

Unused old watering cans and baskets are also hanging in the air, they are out of the way until I need them.

Een bloeiende knolbegonia.

A flowering tuberous begonia.

A broken Agapanthus flower on a bed of green `bedroom happiness` in a terra cotta dish.

It looks neatly in the greenhouse, have been busy last week, but when I turn around I see this.......

This is Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles', flowering from November to June in the greenhouse.  Now she is at the end of her tether. A job for next week, pruning back the Clematis and hosing the windows, then we can enjoy again this special clematis next winter.

Opposite the clematis is the sowing table where lobelias and morning glory are in bloom.

When I step outside the greenhouse, I see on the left the passage through the yew hedge (last week p
trimmed by F.) to the gravel path along the canal.

On the right side I see a piece of bog garden, which also can use a facelift, "o yes,  I am coming".

But behold, let me look forward to take the beauty of the rose 'White Wings'  against a magnificent Dutch blue sky.

And the Hydrangeas, dried up too quickly by the hot sun.  But don't worry there will be more new flowers.
