AAN ALLES KOMT EEN EIND - EVERYTHING COMES TO AN END

Everything comes to an end, even to the life of a dovecote. This I saw last week on the morning after a stormy night.

I went outside and saw something on the path in front of the porch I could not place immediately, I looked up and help.....the wind had robbed the roof of the house of my beloved crows. Only a ruin was left of my once so beautiful dovecote.  Since one week I feed the birds again, the crows come by but of course just have interest in the food. When they fly away they are making a landing movement, but o no, there is no roof on their house to sit on..... Such a pity, so in the future no more babies in the dovecote.  The poor condition of the ruin is not subject to renovation I think. That is being sown and leaving the strong pole standing for my climbing rose ´Pierre de Ronsard´, also called Eden rose. And well, may be I put a new dovecote on it some day.

The dovecote in better times. Also this building was made by my father more than 25 years ago, and while he thought I never should be a pigeon-fancier, he made a wooden fake dove for each entrance. After a number of years one fake dove fell down and the little crows, also called jackdaws, discovered the entrance. Everything was thoroughly inspected and finally found well to build a nest. For years they have raised youngsters in different apartments, was one 'room' not clean enough, they just took another, and pushed along the fake doves until these fell down too.

You will understand that we had lots of pleasure observing these clever birds.

This picture I took this summer with Eden Rose in full bloom, the dovecote is already in decline.

A lonely rose is still flowering on the pole, alone.......

KAUWEN EN EDEN ROSE IN DE DUIVENTIL - JACKDAWS AND EDEN ROSE ON THE DOVECOTE.

The last few months I developed an obsession for jackdaws, for I made a 101 pictures of them.
On the end of the verandah we have a dovecote on a distance of two meters, without pigeons.  The dovecote came first, lateron the verandah. You understand I do not want to have pigeons, because the verandah should change in a pigeon playground with an abundance of droppings. Around the pole grows Rosa 'Pierre de Ronsard'  luxuriantly, unless until this year. The rose visibly has had difficulties last winter, but she is in bloom again.  For the balconies on the dovecote my father made a variety of wooden pigeons.  End of March there arrived a couple of jackdaws to inspect the loft. 'En passant' they threw a few wooden pigeons down and had a look inside. One apartment was found to be good and this was just on the side I could see from the kitchendoor.

April 2, it looked like above, they were collecting at that time twigs for some weeks and making a nest inside.  Sometimes the twigs were too big, which they carefully maneuvered in the apartment. This job took a lot of time before they finally  could start with the interior of the nest.

14 april.

April 14th. What is that, tufts of hair?  Where does that come from ? They go together in their apartment and after some time they leave again, where are they going to?

Across the gate to our neighbours. It cannot be easier, here are 2 horses who like to be plucked.

Together they are busy preparing a cosy nest.

April 20th. They have started on the next layer.  What is that, it looks like toiletpaper, brrrr where does that come from.

4 mei.

May 4th. It seems they have almost finished their nest. They go in and out and sit on the roof.  She will lay her eggs soon now, I have not seen them, but the mother is mainly inside and her husband is outside on the balcony. Meanwhile we go on holidays.

4 juni.

June 4th. The jackdaws have had a quiet time without our peeking.  In the meantime we are back, curious if there are already babies, but we don't see or hear a thing.  Just dad and mum who regularly go in and out. And yes, than I see one jackdaw going into the nest with a head full of food and the other one comes out with the poo.  They have some busy weeks and soon we hear the baby birds squaking, the volume of which increases by the day till they have the sound of little jackdaws.

On June 16th at last I have the chance to photograph a baby jackdaw. I saw already for about 10 days movements in the nest, but it was too dark to make pictures.  I also could not see how many there were, at first we saw only one.

Carefully, the little bird takes a look outside and is curiously watching the world.

17 juni.

June 17th.  Mum and dad are very busy taking care of their babies, and look, finally a picture with 2 small beaks.

The jackdaw watches me with a slightly suspicious glance, on which the children begin to shriek: "Come on, we will food".

18 juni.

June 18th is our first hot day of the year. Mum jackdaw calls them out of their nest, it will be very warm under the roof.

De Eden Rose begint inmiddels te bloeien.

In the meantime the Eden Rose is beginning to show flowers.

"I want to go out but it is a bit scaring, shall I take the plunge?

With this beautiful warm weather I am waiting on the verandah to see them leaving their nest, I read a bit, to my feeling it takes long and I go away for half an hour........... I come back and the birds have   flown!  I know where they are, behind the house under the thicket, mum and dad are feeding them there and give lessons in flying.  Sometimes I see them, but I do hear them all the better.

It is quiet on the verandah, fortunately we still have the Eden rose to look at.
