SERINGEN EN TULPEN - LILACS AND TULIPS

Hier ben ik dan eindelijk weer eens, want foto's worden er wel regelmatig gemaakt, maar een blogje schrijven daar komt niet veel van terecht.
Zoals je ziet, was ik afgelopen herfst ook al lui, ik zocht slechts weinig tulpen uit op naam maar kocht een grote zak gemengde tulpen. Toch vind ik het resultaat best aardig.

At last, here I am again, fotos are made regularly, but writing a blog is the problem.
As you see I was already lazy in autumn, I only searched for a few tulips by name but bought a big bag of mixed tulips.  Nevertheless, I think the result is pretty nice.

Binnen zoek ik naar een vaas voor bloemen voor het weekend. Wat zal ik eens gebruiken?  Aha, de grote koffiepot met seringen komt nu van pas, want de seringen bloeien volop. Alleen.......hoe kom ik daarbij. De bloeiende takken hangen hoog boven het kippenverblijf, wel mooi maar lastig.

Seringen zijn in mijn tuin lastpakken. Ik had een prachtige witte sering 'Mme Lemoine', helaas op zekere dag stond ze los in de grond, werk van woelratten of -muizen, die de wortels hadden afgeknaagd. Ook was er een purperen sering 'Hugo de Vries', na een aantal jaren hetzelfde liedje. Zouden seringenwortels een lekkernij zijn voor die kleine knagers? Bij deze sering kwam echter opschot uit de grond, waarvan ik er één heb laten groeien, dat is dus deze metershoge lila-roze sering, en tot nu toe blijven ze daar van af.

Heb een trap gepakt en stond op de één na bovenste trede om enkele takken te snijden. Na de bloei ga ik nu toch maar eens grondig snoeien, ze maken gemakkelijk nieuwe takken en dan kan ik er tenminste weer normaal bij, hoop ik.

Inside I look for a vase for flowers for the weekend. What shall I use? Aha, the big lilac coffee pot is now useful, there are lots of lilac flowers in the garden. But...... how can I cut them? The blooming branches are high in the sky above the henhouse, nice but tricky.

In my garden lilacs are troublemakers. I used to have a beautiful white lilac 'Mme Lemoine', unfortunately one day she was loose in the ground, the work of water voles or rats, who had gnawed the roots. After a few years the same song with the purple lilac 'Hugo de Vries'. I wonder if lilac roots are a treat for these little rodents.  However, in the second case an increase of branches came from the ground. I left one of the branches and that is this meters high lilac pink Syringa, until now left alone by the rodents. 

I got a stepladder and stood on the second top step to cut some blooming branches. After flowering I must prune this lilac thouroughly, they easily make new branches which is easier to handle for me.

Uit de tuin worden de 'zwarte' tulpen geselecteerd, het zijn er niet veel maar 5 stuks is genoeg. Dan zet ik ze niet in de koffiepot maar in een donkere Ravelli vaas.

'Black tulips' are selected from the garden. there are only 5 but that will do.  I will not put them in the coffee pot but in a dark Ravelli containter. 

Het resultaat is eenvoudig, maar op de manier waar ik van houd.

The result is simple, but in the way that I love.

JUDITH LEYSTER

Wie is Judith Leyster? Zij was een kunstschilderes in de Gouden Eeuw en leefde van 1609 tot 1660. Haar werkt lijkt heel erg op dat van Frans Hals, waar zij hoogstwaarschijnlijk een leerling van was. In een schilderswereld vol mannen werkte zij zich als enige vrouw op tot 'meesterschilder' bij het Gilde in Haarlem. Haar oeuvre was echter niet groot en vooral van de tijd nadat ze trouwde met Jan Miense Moleenaer, ook een kunstschilder, zijn er niet veel werken van haar bekend.

Een ander werk van Judith is een tulpenboek, bestaande uit 49 bladzijden met op elke bladzijde 1 of 2 tulpen. In de 17de eeuw werden tulpenboeken gebruikt als catalogi voor kwekers. Het boek van Judith wordt beschouwd als één der mooiste uit die tijd.

Who is Judith Leyster?  She was a Dutch painter in the Golden Age and lived from 1609 till 1660.

Her work is very similar tot that of Frans Hals, most probably she was a pupil of him. In an artists'  world full of men, she became the first and only female Master Painter, accepted by the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. Most paintings are from before her marriage with Jan Miense Molenaer, also an artist. There are only a few works known from the time after her marriage. 

Another work of Judith is a tulipbook, excisting of 49 pages with on each page 1 or 2 tulips. These books were used as catalogues for growers in the 17th century.  Judith Leyster's book is one of the most beautiful from that time.

Vorige maand hebben we het boek Tulpenliefde van Femke Roobol op onze leesclub besproken. Een boek waarvan het onderwerp me wel aansprak, een liefde tijdens de tulpenmanie. Het las ook heel gemakkelijk weg. In dit boek speelt Judith Leyster een belangrijke rol als vriendin van de hoofdpersoon in het boek.  Hieronder zie je het motto wat voor in het boek staat.

In October we have discussed the book 'Tulip love' written by Femke Roobol on our reading club. A book whose subject appealed to me, a love during the tulip mania. It also was very easy to read. In this book Judith Leyster plays an important role as friend of the main character in the book.  Above you see the motto mentioned on one of the first pages of the book:  'Here one still paints with good and bold sense.'  Samuel Ampzing about Judith Leyster in his Description and praise of the city of Haarlem in Holland 1628. 

Toen ik daarna mijn bollen bestelde bij Verberghe, zag ik tot mijn verrassing dat ze ook een tulp hadden met de naam Judith Leyster. Jullie begrijpen, die moest ik erbij hebben. Afgelopen zaterdag zijn ze aangekomen en op onderstaande foto kun je zien hoe ze worden in het voorjaar.

When I ordered my bulbs by Verberghe, I was surprised to discover in their catalogue a tulip called Judith Leyster. You will understand I ordered this one too. Last Saturday the bulbs arrived and on above picture you can see how they will be next spring.

Toen de doos aankwam was het natuurlijk gelijk uitpakken en uitstallen op tafel buiten. Zoals gewoonlijk hielden de kippen me gezelschap.  En........vanmiddag bijna alles gepoot, dat was pas leuk, kon bijna niet werken, ze stonden met z'n tienen om mij en de bollen heen, bij iedere steek in de grond kwam wel een worm vrij en daar waren ze als de kippen bij.

When the box arrived of course it was immediately unpacking and displaying on the table outside. As usually chickens were keeping me company. And......this afternoon almost all of them have been planted, that was fun, I almost could not work, they were with ten around me and the bulbs, at each stab in the ground a worm came up and there they were the chickens. 

SERINGEN EN TULPEN VOOR PASEN - LILACS AND TULIPS FOR EASTER.

Er groeit en bloeit momenteel zoveel in de tuin dat ik bijna niet weet wat ik het eerst wil laten zien, maar omdat het zaterdag voor Pasen is, ga ik een rondje tuin doen voor een paasboeket. Het zal een combinatie van seringen en tulpen worden.

Hier zie je de seringen struik op de achtergrond en op de voorgrond een mini-veldje van gemengde tulpen. In het midden zie je mijn eerstbloeiende roos ´Canary Bird´, waar ik een andere keer op terugkom.

At the moment there is so much flowering in the garden that I hardly know what to show first, but because it´s the Saturday before Easter I´m going into the garden for an Easterbouquet. It wil be a mix of lilacs and tulips.

Here you see the lilac shrub on the background and in the front a mini-field of mixed tulips.
In the middle you just can see my firstblooming rose ´Canary Bird, of which I shall show you more pictures on a later time.

De tulpen zijn ´s morgens nog dicht - Tulips are almost closed early in the morning.

Midden op de dag als de zon schijnt gaan ze open / At noon when the sun is shining they open their flowers.

Zoals altijd is dit mijn trouwste volger, hier bespiedt hij mij.

De bloemen worden in een kan gezet en wat paasspulletjes erbij, klaar is kees.  De kip in het kooitje kreeg ik van een lieve vriendin, haar man vond het een afschuwelijk cadeautje, maar ik vind de kip schattig hoor Pauline.  Het vogelnestje op de voorgrond is van vorig jaar uit de heg, een paar namaak vogeltjes en eitjes erin, net echt.

I put the flowers in a jug and decorated with some Easter stuff it´s done. The chicken in the cage I got from a dear friend, her husband thought it was a horrible present, but I have to say Pauline your chicken is very cute and quiet. The birdnest in the front is an old nest from our hedge, a couple of fake birds and some eggs, just real.

EEN BEZOEK AAN DE HORTUS BULBORUM TE LIMMEN - A VISIT TO THE HORTUS BULBORUM IN LIMMEN VILLAGE.

Tweede woensdag van de maand is tuinclubdag.  Dit keer bezochten we de Hortus Bulborum te Limmen, de schatkamer van historische bolgewassen.

Een kleine tuin anno 1928, maar wel uniek in binnen en buitenland want er wordt een ongekende collectie van veelal oude en historische bolgewassen getoond. Voor de commercie zijn deze bolgewassen nauwelijks meer interessant en worden daarom bijna niet meer gekweekt, eigenlijk is het een openlucht bollenmuseum.

De primaire doelstelling is het in stand houden van allerlei oude rassen.

De omvangrijke verzameling omvat inmiddels meer dan 4000 verschillende soorten, waaronder meer dan 2600 tulpen, 130 hyacinten, ongeveer 1100 narcissen, 110 krokussoorten en ruim 24 verschillende Frittilaria´s.

Second Wednesday of the month is gardenclub day. This time we visited the Hortus Bulborum at Limmen, a treasury of historical bulbs.
A small garden, established in 1928, but nowhere on this globe you will find such a fine selection of old bulbs in one place. Many of these bulbs have no commercial value for modern mass production whatsoever.  The aim is to maintain these cultivars and safeguard them for the future generations, so the fundamental in this garden is the preservation of heirloom bulbs. 

The Hortus Bulborum is the only museum garden in the world where you can find over 4000 different bulbs. The current collection contains over 2600 cultivars of tulips, some 130 hyacinths, around 1100 daffodils, some 110 crocuses and a few dozen of fritillaries.

The ´Leprechauns´ (club name) are interested garden lovers and enjoyed the sunny day.

Van de keizerskronen heb ik er slechts enkelen in mijn tuin om de mollen af te schrikken, maar hier op het veld staan ze prachtig.

I have only a few Fritillaria imperialis in my garden to frighten the moles, but here in the field they show wonderful.

Zelfs tulpen in de kerk / Even tulips in church.

Deze laatste foto is van de oudste gekweekte tulp uit de collectie van de Hortus Bulborum, de enkele vroege tulp ´Duc van Tol Rood en Geel´ uit 1595.  Hiervan kreeg ik afgelopen herfst 5 bollen van mijn jongste dochter, die nu bloeien in een pot.

This last picture is of the famous ´Duc van Tol Red and Yellow´, dated from 1595 and the oldest known cultivar. I got last autumn 5 bulbs from my youngest daughter which are flowering now.
