BOLLEN EN EEN BESCHILDERD EI - BULBS AND A PAINTED EGG

This week I planted the last 100 mixed tulips and put the hyacinths on their glasses. They are now in a dark corner of the basement until they are sprouting in the new year. It's always a joy to start the new year with own grown bulbs.

When I came into the basement, there was a peacock butterfly fluttering below the lamp and sat down on the wall. After the photo I put the butterfly carefully outside.

More butterflies. After visiting the exhibition of Botanical Art in the noordbrabants museum in 's Hertogenbosch with our garden club, I came home last night and found a parcel on the table wrapped in butterfly paper. In the parcel was the painted egg I ordered at Yolanda of www.komachterom.blogspot.nl. That's quick, ordered on Monday, in the house on Wednesday. Thank you for the quick delivery and the safe packing Yolanda.

The painted goose egg is a St.Nicholas gift for my 94 years old mother in the nursinghome. They have a St. Nicholas party with small presents and because she loves robins, St.Nicholas gives her this beautiful egg.  I will carefully pack it again and then it will be delivered to St. Nicholas.  The party is end of this month and of course I will be there to celebrate it with the elderly.

That's it for today. Snarf and I wish you all a very nice weekend!

ZWANEN EN DE LAATSTE ROZEN? - SWANS AND LAST ROSES?

A whole day at home, that does not happen often nowadays, but perfect to spend all day gardening. Almost do not know where to start so much to do before real wet and cold days are coming.  Although temperatures are back to normal for November, it is fine weather for outdoor work.
I start in front of the house, cut wheelbarrows full of ivy, old hydrangea branches and so on.  I am suddenly startled by a spectacular sound that rages in the water, it's mom and dad swan with their child making a deafening noise and wing flapping to rise slowly and land softly after a hundred meters.
I continue gardening, moments later they approach. Swimming and floating quietly, they look curious what I'm doing, but of course someone else has already seen them too.......

Snarf welcomes them barking loud, the swans blow back.

Rosa 'Mary Rose'

 Rosa 'Lavender Dream'

In the afternoon I take pictures of some last flowering roses and then I pick them off.

 Rosa 'Queen Elisabeth'

 Rosa 'Etoile de Hollande'

 Rosa 'Ferdinand Prichard'

 Rosa 'Paul's Scarlet'

In the kitchen I fill various vases with roses.

 Rosa 'Tchaikovsky'

The rose 'Tchaikovksy' has a firm long flowering branch, I have a moment of doubt and cut it off.....

We have 'Tchaikovski' since last summer and it appears to be an asset to the garden.

Rosa 'Pat Austin'

 Rosa 'Glamis C astle'

 Rosa 'Kent'

Bulb glasses are also very useful for flowers and decoration.

Still, remains for me to thank you all for the astonishing number of comments on my post about the hydrangeas, I really enjoyed it and shall do my best to react as much as possible on your news.

HERFST IN HUIS EN TUIN - AUTUMN IN HOUSE AND GARDEN.

.When I returned  yesterday morning from my adventures with Snarf, my eye was caught by a cobweb on the gate. I watched to the left and saw another cobweb with a pretty spider. "Shall we make a stroll in the garden first?"  I asked Snarf,  he looked at me and walked straight on to the gardenpath for he understands many, many words, even sentences.

We walk along the waving grass, Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' and look from behind a border into the garden.

In these borders we still can enjoy the Hydrangeas, which have lost their intense colours by now and have adapted themselves to the season.  Asters are still flowering profusely but are over their top, alse caused by the very bad weather of a week ago.  There are yet monkshood flowers and here and there a rose, as this "Brown Velvet".  The rusty colour of this rose is the best in dark weather, when it is sunny and warm the colour tends to a less beautiful tint of orange.

Along the path to the upper garden is an enormous Hydrangea 'Annabelle', which also has the best time behind them.  This Hydrangea I ever got as a small cutting of a gardening friend.  In the meantime, I have taken many pieces of this shrub as give-aways.

And yes, the Metasequoia cannot escape the eye either.  It is a huge grower,  about one meter a year, where is he going, straight to the sky.  This tree was a wish of my husband, I hope we won't regret.

We leave the upper garden to the left and go straight on to the gravelpath along the canal, there are the most of our Hydrangeas.  These Hydrangeas, of which I do not know the cultivar names, because these are all cuttings from all kind of shrubs, are almost growing literally above the greenhouse.

And who peeks around the corner of the yew hedge:  My most faithful follower.  He has thrown a toy on the gravelpath.

In the afternoon I go to cut some Hydrangeas before they are unsightly.  Most flowers are  already dried on the shrub and can be used immediately, without water.  I also collected chestnuts. When I see them, I cannot resist to pick my bags full, like children do.

For inside I made a wreath, quite boring for I make every year one or more wreaths.  The old cloth which was draped above the mantelpiece in the fifties of the last century, is brought out each fall to put on the old table temporarily.

In the wreath I also used some flowers of autumn asters and shimmering seed hairs of clematis.

One branch of the pretty Aster 'Purple Dome', I put on one of my bulb glasses.  Within a few weeks the bulbs will be put on the glasses for next spring.

"October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The chestnuts, oaks and maples,
And leaves of every name.
The sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band."

SPELEN MET BLOEIENDE BOLLEN - PLAYING WITH BLOOMING BULBS

In the conservatory more and more bulbs come into flower.  Today I'll get to work with the blue and white flowering ones.
The Iris reticulata, dwarf iris, is a widespread species from Turkey, Caucasus, Iran and Iraq. In that region they are grown on large scale.  The bottle-shaped bulbs require an alkaline, well drained soil and sunny positions. They are ideally suited to the rock garden or the front of borders and are flowering in February.
In our garden I tried them various times but it remains a one year, sometimes two year show.  I suppose that's due to the fact I have no rock garden soil.
This time I had an idea. I planted mother and baby swan full of bulbs of the blue Iris reticulata. During the frost period I moved them from the cold greenhouse to the warm conservatory where they quickly came to bloom.  It is not that explosion of blue as I imagined, some are in flower others just peep above the soil, but I think it's worthwhile to show.

Fortunately, I put white hyacinths in my blue bulb glasses, where they just start flowering.

The white Amaryllis was first in a pot on the windowsill but became too heavy for the stem and has broken , now I put the white flower on a glass dish.
