Jaren had ik een klein groepje Colchicums in de tuin aan de voet van de Abies koreana. Vorig jaar was het plotseling minder en dit jaar zijn ze helemaal niet meer opgekomen, vreemd.......
Toen ik een paar weken geleden in Boskoop was en daar nog wat extra bloembollen kocht voor de tuin, zag ik prachtige knollen van de Colchicums in potjes staan. Ik kon het niet laten om er een potje mee te nemen voor op het tafeltje naast de keukendeur op de veranda. Ze bloeien al wekenlang en zijn ook nu nog mooi. Als ze uitgebloeid zijn, gaan ze naar de tuin maar wel op een andere plek dan de vorige.
De Colchicum autumnale, hier bekend als herfsttijloos komt verspreid voor in Centraal- en West-Europa. De exemplaren met grotere bloemen uit Oost-Europa worden Colchicum pannonicum genoemd.
De naam Colchicum is afgeleid van Colchis, de streek waar de mythologische gifmengster Medea woonde. Het grootste aantal soorten treft men in de Balkan en in Anatolië aan.

When I was in Boskoop a few weeks ago and bought some more bulbs for the garden, I saw beautiful Colchicums in pot, not yet flowering. I could not resist to buy one pot for the small table next to the kitchendoor on the porcch. They are flowering already for weeks and are still nice. When they have finished flowering I'll put them in the garden but certainly on another spot than the former ones.
The Colchicum autumnale, in our country known as 'herfsttijloos' are native to Cntral- and Western Europe. The ones with bigger flowers from Easteren Europe are called Colchicum pannonicum.
The name Colchicum is from Colchis, the area where the poison-mixer Medea was living.

De tafel was gedekt voor 6 uitgenodigde vrienden en ik kan nu vertellen, het werd een gezellige avond.
I had collected flowers for the Sunday as I had invited friends for dinner. Miscanthus plumes in the middle of the decoration. I can tell you now it became a very pleasant evening.
Op een tafeltje tegen de muur maakte ik een 'drijvertje' met Clematis sororia 'Freckles' uit de kas. Zo is er altijd, ook in November, nog wel iets bruikbaars te vinden op eigen terrein.

Na de voorbereidingen voor het eten, was het goed wachten op de gasten met een glaasje eigengemaakte pruimenbrandewijn. Nee, wel aanlokkelijk maar dit is een grapje, kon moeilijk al aan de alcohol gaan voordat de gasten binnen waren.
After preparations for dinner, it was a good waiting for the guests with a glass of home-made plum brandy. No, I'm joking, no alcohol before the guests were in.
