GEDACHTEN UIT MIJN 'TUIN'-STOEL - THOUGHTS FROM MY 'GARDEN' SEAT.

Last week I had no energy to sit down at the pc, just for a moment looking on my iPad during coffee- or lunchtime, that was it. We had some wonderful days on which I hardly knew where to start, so much to do and to enjoy outside in the garden as well as inside. While I prefer working outdoors, the house was calling, cleaning jitters fell upon me. Especially in our living where the woodstove burned all winter it was not a luxury to give it a good cleaning with soapy water. But the sun was luring me out again and again. Result: everywhere work in progress, anyway I will get ready, it only will take some time.  Of course I took some photos during my early morning round in the garden.

Friday I thought: 'Now I have to make a blogpost', pffft in the evening I lacked the energy, yes years are counting. Saturday afternoon I sorted the photos, then I had a look at my blogposts of former years in April. I should not have done that, largely it was every year the same. From 2012 until this moment about the same flowers and plants, about new growth and so on, even the photos were almost the same.  Depressed I closed the computer, next time better.

Last night, actually very early in the morning I thought it all over and see, I'm here again.

I clean my house, the jackdaws make preparations for their nest in the dovecote.

Former years they upholstered their nest with horsehair, the horse called Grandiose, remains stoically.

This year they had other plans. For spring cleaning I put the red cow-hide, normally as a carpet in the livingroom, outside on the porch.  Promptly one of the crows began pulling out hairs....... What's the idea behind: 'This is even more convenient, only 5 meters from my nest, flying to those horsebacks is about 10 meters....'.  After the photo I took the 'carpet' immediately inside, you understand.

Pear trees blossom white, after the book written by Gerbrand Bakker, highly recommended.
This is the Gieser Wildeman, F. loves stewed pears in winter. I could not resist to make another photo, phenomenal against the plain blue sky.

The budding leaves of the Acer pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantissimum', make me lyrical.

Oh I wanted to reduce this time in photos and in text, but I cannot resist, when I have started I naturally get excited.

Rovers....

I almost stepped on this egg in the flowerborder. Probably the duck could not keep her egg until she reached her nest. I put the egg on a boxwood, next day it had gone. Raptors....

Mijn ontdekking in de composthoop.........

My discovery in the compost heap......

Do you see this cute little one? When we had our breakfast in the conservatory this morning I saw the bunny nibbling on the Nepetas. There are three of them and their parents, that makes five (may be there are more). In the evening when the sun goes down, they eat together on the lawn. The little ones are slightly bigger than my hand. When I'm in the garden, I sometimes hear them crackling between plants or I see them running away. They have already been nibbling at my just planted sweet peas. F. put wire mesh around now.

Hier geldt echter mijn motto:

'Eerst de dieren dan de planten'.

I adore them despite they destroy half my garden. However, here goes my motto:

'First animals, second plants'.

Iedereen een prachtige nieuwe week toegewenst!

A wonderful new week for you all!

'ORANGES AND LEMONS'

When I see my pictures, the garden is a real pleasure ground. However, this is not true, by the profusion of blooming roses you do not notice that there is much wrong with the garden.
Wild bunnies have beheaded lots of Geraniums, only the stems are still standing. But not all Geranium varieties are eaten, fortunately they left some nice ones for us to enjoy. It was quite sad with the columbines, no flower was spared, even though my carnation cultivars only show bare stems peaking in the air.
Then the big slug infestation, I was just too late and should not have gone on hollidays, haha.
I am so sorry that my Delphiniums has been suffering of slugs, as also the Hostas, Lupins and the Dahlias.
Of course lily beetles are featuring of the lilies, worse than ever.
Yes, I have failed, should have been catching rabbits, slugs and lily beetles, every day.
So glad there is still plenty that looks good, I would be crazy to take pictures of Hostas full of slug holes.

Rosa 'Pat Austin' is in her third year and performs better than ever. This rose had a weak start and flowers on drooping stems, but she is growing stronger with the years. On the background Salvia guaranitica shows a very early flower, normally this plant starts flowering late summer. This pretty plant is earlier due to the frostfree winter and the fact I left her in the garden instead of the greenhouse.

Here you see the red branches with terribly sharp thorns of the rose 'Canary Bird'.
'Canary Bird' is an early flowering shrub, May is normal flowering time, but this year the rose was already in full bloom in April.
This morning I walked past the rose and saw one beautiful latecomer.

Notwithstanding  the thorns, this rose has some ornamental value by the fine foliage after flowering.

And this is 'Lady Hillingdon', a climbing Tea rose which I saw for the first time in a French garden, I looked and she conquered my heart.
I immediately loved this rose and ordered her next autumn. Meanwhile the rose has been moved around twice in connection with the building of a new garage.  It took some time to recover, but she did it, first flowers are there again.
It is already an antique rose for she is bred by Lowe & Shawyer in the U.K. in 1910.  She has a delicate apricot-yellow colour, contrasting fine with the dark green foliage which is coppery- mahogany when young.  She has a strong but lovely Tea Rose fragrance.
What more could we want......
I

Phlomis russeliana, is a perennial loving sun and heat and a well drained soil.  Is already for many years in my garden with good and less good results, but until now they have not disappeared.  This spring the Phlomis had a good start and I even discovered seedlings on unexpected spots.

At last I can put David Austin's rose 'Abraham Darby' in the spotlights. This rose we have already 25 years in our garden, stood at first for years at an open gazebo until we removed the gazebo and the rose was regressing rapidly.  But 'Abraham Darby' is still alive and shows at the moment some beautiful flowers on a shrub afflicted by black spot. The great thing about the flowers is that from bud to wilting they show a lot of difference in colour and even in shape.   I took some close-ups and made a collage to cover up the imperfections of the leaves on the background.

Rabbit meets hare, here's the bad guy again. But there is not only one rabbit, when I came outside with my camera, there was another one making antics on the garden path.

Rosa 'Peaudouce' with in the front a long stem with buds of the Yucca filamentosa.

Rosa 'Peaudouce' is one of my healthiest Hybrid Tea roses.  Nowadays she is called 'Elina' because 'peaudouce' represents a French nappy trade mark as well.  I like the name 'Peaudouce' more,  the name sounds pretty in the ears and the rose looks like a 'soft skin'.  The colour  of a delicate pale yellow belongs to the soft skin I think.  She has slight fragrance and was bred in 1984 by Dickson in the UK.

Verbascum nigrum, a simple yellow torch of which I collected seeds in the French Alps many years ago on one of our camping hollidays with the children. Since that time they appear every year on different spots in the garden.

And this is again a Hybrid Tea rose, named 'Grenadine'.  She is rather new, was bred in 2000 by Poulsen in Denmark.  I have to confess this was an impulse purchase at the gardencentre round the corner.  It was summer and 'Grenadine' was smiling at me with her sunny face, I could not resist her and took her with me.   She is doing perfect for already five years and is extremely healthy.  Slight fragrance, but always showing some flowers, while she is not planted on the most convenient spot, slightly more sun would probably do wonders.

Trifolium ochroleucon is a sulphur perennial clover, easy to multiply from seed.

This invasive yellow Lysimachia punctata or loosestrife should not be missing in a yellow planting. Anything too much you just pull out.  In our garden the vertical flowers are situated around the David Austin roses 'Graham Thomas'.

The Austin roses 'Graham Thomas' are with three on one and the same spot for more than 25 years. They go backwards now but still give a good show. When I planted them, the garden was still bare, now they are standing in the shade of the Catalpa tree.

Lychnis chalcedonica, the burning love belongs in my hot colour garden too. Not a very strong perennial but I always collect seeds for next years.

And this is again my New Zealand rose of Sam McGrady, the 'Brown Velvet', or as they call her in New Zealand 'Colourbreak'.
When there is no sun, the flowers are of a deep terra-cotta, very unusual but beautiful. By sunny weather they tend to orange.

But for today this is the last one, but certainly not the least: Rosa 'Oranges and Lemons', a two coloured beauty.
Roses with stripes are not my favourites, but yes there are always exceptions, even more.
Also this is again a Hybrid Tea rose, I only now discover that I have so many tea roses, and is bred by Sam McGredy in 1995. Oh, it is almost annoying, this a a strong, healthy and high growing rose too and every year I am looking forward to her first special flowers.

'Oranges and Lemons' always make me think of a glass of lemonade, fresh and sweet on a hot summerday.
