Finally we can skate on the lakes. Last week the weather was very promising, moderate to heavy frost, hardly any wind, the water changed in one night in ice smooth as a mirror. In the weekend icy wind and snowfall were a kill-joy. But frost continued, the sun came back and now we have already three beautiful ice-skating days.
My father was an enthusiast figure skater and when I was 6 years old he put me on the ice. Where I have been grown up there was less water than where we live now so we skated in that time on the natural ice rink or behind the farm where two very deep wheels were situated, named "The Large and The Small Hole". These wheels are caused by a damburst in 1533.
When I was 8 I got real figure skates and my father teached us circling, reeling and all kind of caprioles. In that time figure skating was more in vogue than nowadays, there are hardly figure skaters on natural ice, speed skating is the typical Dutch sport. After my marriage I moved to the watery area of South-Holland, I still know I said the first time I came here : "what a high water level". They also told me in the past they could skate in cold winters from Rotterdam to Gouda, where they bought a long stone pipe, the point was to bring this pipe back home unbroken.
When I had been skating several times on the frozen river on my figure skates, I wanted Norwegian speedskates. That was a big change, but I got used to it. After that time I kept my figure skates for the ice rink or on a pond and I joined an ice dancing club for some years.
Nowadays I mainly skate when there is natural ice. I have to acknowledge that I don't even skate for sport, being outside in nature with all elements of the weather is most important for me, the plain of ice, the wide open landscape, the cold, the wind, the sun and the snow. Looking around and enjoying, preferably in the morning when there are hardly people to be seen.

After all those years there has not changed so much on the ice, the 'Koek en Zopie' is still there.
What is the origine of the word 'Koek en Zopie'? This is the food and beverage which is sold by the ice, mainly consisting of hot chocolate, glühwein, pea soup and filled cakes. Zopie is the name of the liquor people were drinking on the ice in the 17th up to and incl. the 19th century, and yes, in Duth the name speaks for itself, when you drink enough of this, you will be drunken.
The original recipee for Zopie is as follows:
1 liter beer
1 cinnamon stick
2 cloves
2 slices of lemon
125 gr. brown caster sugar
2 eggs
1 dl brown rum
Boil the beer together with the cinnamon, cloves and lemon. Infuse it on a low back burner for about 20 minutes. Mix the sugar with the eggs and thicken the beer with this. Finally add the rum.
You should drink it hot!
