This autumn we have not had much dense fog and relatively few gloomy days. November is quite varied this year, rain, wind, sun, fog, sun, gray, sun, rain, gray, sun.........When I go out in the morning haunting with Snarf, it is hardly light. The silence is overwhelming, the smell of moss on rotten wood stumps, fungis. The birds are silent, some small birds flutter out of the leaves on the damp earth. In the gray atmosphere you hardly recognize them. A fallen tree is leaning against another tree and an overhanging branch has something fluttering, a decaying magpie.
This reminds me to an old poem, written in 1852 by Piet Paaltjens. I read it in the booklet "A variety of banter and fancy", poems by Dutch poets collected by W.J. van Zeggelen, issued by H.A.M. Roelants, Schiedam at the end of the 19th century. When I read this poem I always have to laugh, it is tragic but so humorous.
En hij trapte in een plas;
't Spattend slik had zijn boordjes bemorst schier.
Dien mijnheer, eens zoo dik
-Piet Paaltjens-
I could not find an official translation of above poem, so I tried to translate it myself :
THE SUICIDE
In the depths of the forest
It was already autumn and very cold
Walked a gentleman on his own to wander.
Oh, his eyes looked so dull!
And his clothes were so weird.
He gritted his teeth, as if he was grinding.
Ha, so he called frantically
I have a brood of vipers,
No, worse, a dragon on my chest here,
And he hit on his coat,
and he stepped in a puddle,
the splashing mud made his cuffs dirty.
And immediately searched his gaze
For a branch of an oak, thick enough
to carry his body.
Then he pulled a rope from his pocket,
Hung himself.
And then he could not longer bedabble.
It became quiet in the forest,
And ten times as cold,
Because winter came.
And meanwhile still hung on his branch,
Dead at ease,
That gentleman, to the amazement of sparrows.
And winter passed,
for spring appeared,
to depart for summer again,
Then wandered over - it was very hot -
A love couple arm in arm through the forest.
But how they were puzzled.

Then wandered over - it was very hot -
A love couple arm in arm through the forest.
But how they were puzzled.
Because, while they went forth, so sweet in love,
And thought:
Below this oak it is good to make love.
Came a boot down of the man hanging there,
Slipping of his long digested left leg.
"All my life! from where does that boot come",
cried the love couple.
And mechanically they looked up,
And there they saw with terror
That gentleman, once so thick,
And now gnawed to a skelton.
On his grinning head,
Was still upright his hat.
But the edge had gone. All his linen
was frayed and drab.
Through a hole in his sleeve
gazed ants and worms and spiders.
His watch had stopped,
And a glass of his spectacles
was broken and the other was fogged.
On the edge of a pocket
of his vest was a snail,
A very slimy snail, gnawing quietly.
In a flash the lust to make love was extinguished by the couple.
They even dared to speak a word.
They looked as white as a sheet,
Already a whole day on the grass to bleach.
Snarf takes me out of my musings by kicking against my shins. He wants to say:
"Come on, back to work, let that ball fly again, I'll catch and bring it back". We walk and run along the border of the bushes and have a break at the edge of the water..........So beautiful, but that is what I think every day. In the meantime it is getting lighter.
And across the lakes of the Rotte, the sun is rising, it will be another beautiful autumn day.
It is a cold day, so I gather all the flowering chrysanthemums in the garden to enjoy them in the house.
I don't make complicated flower arrangements, but put everything together in pitchers and coffee pots.
And then I make myself a mug of coffee.
