VIBURNUM TINUS BLOEMEN VOOR SINTERKLAAS ZIJN VERJAARDAG - VIBURNUM TINUS FLOWERS FOR ST. NICHOLAS' BIRTHDAY

Een koude grijze dag vandaag met temperaturen rond het vriespunt. Dat valt even tegen na een lange tijd van vorstloze dagen.

Ik ben druk bezig met de voorbereidingen voor ons Sinterklaasfeestje, 5 december, maar besloot toch even de tuin in te gaan om wat bloemen te zoeken.

En zie de Viburnum tinus 'Gwenllian' bloeit volop. Ik pluk er knopjes, bloemetjes die licht geuren, nieuwe bruinrode besjes en oude blauwzwarte besjes van.  Is het niet grappig, dat dit allemaal tegelijkertijd aan de struik zit?

A cold gray day today with temperatures around zero, rather disappointing after a very long period of too high temperatures for the time of year.  

I am busy with preparations for our St. Nicholas birthday party, but I decided to go into the garden for some flowers.

And look, the Viburnum tinus 'Gwenllian'  shows lots of flowers.  I pick some buds, flower heads with tiny slightly fragrant flowers, new brownreddish berries and old metalic black berries. Is n't it funny that these are all on the shrub at the same time?

Deze groenblijvende, compacte Viburnum komt uit het Middellandse Zeegebied en zolang we geen lange, zware vorstperiode krijgen doet deze Viburnum het goed in ons land. Enkele jaren geleden toen we een lange koude winter hadden, liep de plant veel schade op en heb ik hem in april flink teruggesnoeid. Even zag het er niet mooi uit, maar weldra vormden zich nieuwe takken en herstelde de struik zich.

This evergreen, compact Viburnum is from the Mediteranean area and as long as we don't have long and heavy frost periods this Viburnum is growing well in our country. For some years we had a long and cold winter, with damage of frost.  In April I cut all the damaged branches back.  At first it was looking ugly but soon new branches were formed and the shrub restored.

Advantage of the Viburnum tinus :  long period of flowering:
                                          November, December, January, February, March and April.

Nadeel van deze heester : de matige winterhardheid in ons klimaat.

Chocoladetaart is gebakken voor Sinterklaas en ik heb mijn leuke vogel kopjes uit de kast gehaald.

I baked a chocolate cake for the St. Nicholas party and got my cute bird cups from the cupboard.

Dit zijn ze dan Sint en Piet, foto genomen en een beetje bijgesneden in het gezellige en goede verzorgingshuis waar mijn moeder nu woont. Ik mocht daar meegenieten van hun Sinterklaasfeest en een heerlijk buffet.

Here they are, Sint and Piet. I cropped the photo a little which I took in the cozy and good care home where my mother lives. I joined their St. Nicholas party and enjoyed a delicious buffet with the elderly and their family. 

Cadeautjes, vooral voor mijn jongetjes, dochters en schoonzoon, Snarf en F. staan al klaar op de schoorsteenmantel. Alleen de gedichten moeten nog worden gemaakt, hoe langer ik er mee wacht hoe beter het gaat.

Presents, especially for my little boys, daughters and son, Snarf and F. are already on the mantelpiece. Only the rhymes must be made, the longer I wait, the better it goes. 

En Snarf houdt elke beweging van mij nauwlettend in de gaten!

And Snarf  keeps a close eye on every movement!

MOOIE MOMENTEN - HAPPY MOMENTS

Begin van de week zocht ik in de tuin nog wat laatste rozen om in deze bijzondere kop en schotel te zetten die ik van een vriendin kreeg.  Zij had van haar moeder heel veel oude kop en schotels geërfd en weet dat ik van rozen houd.  

In the beginning of the week I was looking around in my garden for some last roses to put in this special cup and saucer which a friend gave to me. She inherited from her mother lots of old cups and saucers and she knows I love roses.

Het parelmoer glanzende kopje heeft 3 pootjes en is daardoor erg wankel, met de rozen werd het topzwaar en viel het drie keer om voordat het bleef staan.

The pearly cup has 3 legs and is therefore very shaky, with the roses it became top-heavy and it fell three times before it stood.

Op donderdag 5 december was het Sinterklaas wat vooral een kinderfeest is en bij ons thuis gevierd wordt met kinderen, kleinkinderen en Snarf...... Na de hapjes en pompoensoep kon het feest dan eindelijk beginnen. De jongetjes vonden ook de rijmpjes en gedichtjes erg leuk.

On Thursday December 5th it was Santa-Claus, which is mainly a children's party and is celebrated in our home with children, grand-children and Snarf...... After the appetizers and pumpkinsoup Santa-Claus knocked on the door and threw gingernuts inside. The children ran to the door but he had already gone. |There were presents for everyone with funny rhymes and poems.

Snarf was in zijn nopjes met zijn nieuwe piepende kerstboom man.

Snarf was in his element with his new squeaking christmas-tree-man.

En toen kwam ik vanmorgen in de kas om mijn laatste Iris bolletjes in een pot te poten en viel mij de Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' op die er al een maand staat te bloeien.

And then I came this morning in the greenhouse to plant my last Iris reticulata bulbs in a pot and I noticed the Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles', which is flowering already for a month.

Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles', is een wintergroene clematis die op een beschutte standplaats in november en december bloeit met fraaie, kleurrijke, klokvormige bloemen.   Bij ons staat deze clematis in de kas, want ze verdraagt wel wat vorst maar beslist geen strenge winters. Soms gebruik ik takjes waaraan de uitzonderlijk lange, dunne bloemstelen van 6-7 cm zitten in schalen als decoratie in huis.

Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles', is an  evergreen clematis which flowers on a sheltered site in November and December with beautiful, colorful, bell shaped flowers.  We have this clematis in the greenhouse, because she is rather hardy but does not tolerate severe frost.  Sometimes I use twigs with exceptional long thin flower stems of 6 to 7 cm. in dishes to decorate the house.
