MIJN LEVEN ROND DE ROZEN IN DE HERFST - MY LIFE AROUND THE ROSES IN AUTUMN

Summer has easily proceeded in fall,  almost a week has passed again with more sun than we could predict. The roses have done very well this year and many are still flourishing unabated.  During some mornings this week I photographed the flowering roses, for undoubtedly their colours will fade away within short time. When the weather gets really bleak, I mostly cut all my good looking roses to enjoy them inside, but gladly it is not yet that far.

In the beginning of this week the rose Penny Lane was still flowering on the fence with great flowers, that contrast beautifully against the blue sky with light drifting clouds.

Also Bantry Bay shows a late branch with flowers, which are reaching to the sky.  To keep the many roses along the fence strong and healthy, I cover the soil before winter with cow manure or well rotted horse manure.

The rose Madame Isaac Pereire grows high on an obelisk where she shows her second flowering period, often more beautiful than in summer.  The fragrance is lovely but less intense than on balmy summer mornings or nights.

As you see, it is not all moonlight and roses, there is a lot of work to do.  Last week we cleared out and demolished the kitchen, sanded doors and cleaned walls with ammonia. This week the plasterer came and after eating a lot of dust he made a smooth wall, there is a start.
.

Snarf is peeping round the corner and thinks: " That stupid little woman making photos of this....?"

Yes lingering outside between the roses is much better than spending time in that cluttered home.  The rose Souvenir de la Malmaison showed this year many beautiful flowers too, she drew benefit of the many dry days. She showed hardly dirty wet brown crumpled flowers, but this time fragrant, big pale pink filled beauties.

This is the rose Lady Hillingdon, I did not show her before, though she is already a number of years in our garden.  I saw her for the first time on a garden trip to France in 2006, in the garden Le Clos du Coudray, and fell in love.  In that autumn I ordered her.  In our garden this rose is not a fast growing one,  however, she has been moved to another spot in connection with the building of a new garage.  I try to keep an extra eye on her, now in the fall at last she shows some flowers.

These are the last flowers of the rose Acropolis.  A Floribunda rose of Meiland.  It is the first year for this rose, she does excellent, have not yet written about her because I think her striking special colour is a bit disappointing.

A last rose of Moody Blue showing beautiful between the Michalmas daisies.

And then we heard this week at dawn a screeching from the Catalpa.  A group of ringneck parakeets had landed in the tree.. Want to show this, although the photos are not optimal.  These tropical birds originating from South-Asia and Central-Africa are beautiful bright green, noisy and assertive.  They are escaped and released cage birds who also breed in nestboxes, nowadays they are a well-known appearance in our cold damp country, because they can survive excellent.  They eat mainly seeds and fruit which they can find easily in our country. It is not a native specie but for me they may stay when they do not cause too much trouble.

The rose Pat Austin is a gem in my garden.  I have her for the second year and has grown to a beautiful but also strong rose who has given us much pleasure a whole summer long.

The pale yellow Peau douce is there already for years and goes on and on.

This is Oranges and Lemons, do not flower in abundance, but always shows a bud or flower. The orange and yellow stripes have faded somewhat in fall.

Austin's rose Mary Rose, is already for years a topper, despite the fact she is planted on a shady spot under a tree.

The rose Fleurette, a tall shrub rose, which shows from early summer to late in autumn her beautiful single flowers, has no scent but is very strong. Actually a rose  suitable for parks but I should not want to miss her in the garden.

In the middle of this rosy autumn week my mother celebrated her 92nd  birthday, therefore we put her literally and figuratively in the flowers, here on the picture with The Fairy roses.

Now we temporarily cannot use our kitchen, I cook in the greenhouse, do the washing up in the bathroom, tap water in the basement or toilet and we live mainly in the conservatory where our old fridge is situated and other first necessities.  Looking through a window of the conservatory we see the rose Gloire de Dyon, a wonderful rose. At the moment the foliage is suffering of black spot but this is one of my first blooming roses in spring and in autumn she gives e second flush of flowers.  It is one of my all time favourites.

Graham Thomas is also a long flowering rose, until frost arrives.  The shrubs however, are old and worn out, they are already for 24 years on the same spot.

Brown Velvet or in New Zealand called Colourbreak has rather a lot of buds yet, it is one of my most cherished roses due to sweet memories of our travels in New Zealand.

The rose Lady of the Dawn is at least 20 years in the garden, the plants look somewhat weedy but the flowers remain invariably beautiful.

The hips of the rose Scharlachsglut are glowing and brilliant for a long time.

Despite the mess I wanted te make it a little cozy at home. At last our grapes are good for eating, but the birds discovered them too, so we picked them all this week. During Snarf's early morning walk we saw many hazelnuts, so I crammed my pockets with them.  The glossy stone dear in the centre, was a find on the annual antiques and curiosa market in Lille.  Actually, lateron I disliked it, but at first I thought it was for pâté, but no it is only a dish for chocolates or so with a deer lid.  Anyway, it was only a few Euros.  Now I used the thing to drape  the grapes over it.  Dahlias and Sedum from the garden are put in a soupcup of the Palissy tableware I found on a bootsale on the grounds of Kingston Lacey Estate in England.  As I have already more parts of this tableware, it was a nice addition.  The pinecones we gathered in the woods near Heeze a month ago.

When I am relaxed working and fiddling on the verandah with my decorations, of course this hairy boy is there too. "Time is precious, you better spend that time to me, is not it?" - "Yes Snarf, I am coming."

Yesterday morning the weather turned at last, it was raining and raining all day long. Alas, it had to happen.  The blue  bindweed is still flowering and colours nicely together with the dark blue berries of the Virginia creeper.

The rose Tchaikovsky is almost dripping of raindrops but her pale yellow-pink colour combines wonderfully with the yellow Chrysanthemums.

Davind Austin's Abraham Darby defies the rain and still tries to show her heart. The season of the roses is almost over.

'T is the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone.

  1. Oh, my - your roses are so very pretty! I could not name a favorite, you have so many pretty ones. I love the photo of the rose bloom with the Michalmas daisies. I hope your renovation goes quickly and smoothly. It has to be difficult to work with no kitchen, but you have a great attitude.

  3. Hi Janneke, I'm impressed with your collection of roses and oh boy you remember all their names. I only have five of a kind and even then I struggle to remember their names. Your little buddy Snarf is such a loyal companion isn't he? He loves sneaking to see what you're doing. I would love to forage in your local parks to find some goodies. The hazelnuts look so fresh and the grapes are sweet.

Thank dear friend for your visit and sharing your bounty.

    Have. Lovely week

  9. You have so many beautiful roses - I only have a few maybe six - but would love to find room for many more - but they must have fragrance and I must learn how to look after them better. Hope you are managing ok without your kitchen and that it isn't too stressful for you and Snarf of course. Have a good week.

  13. Greetings Janneke,
Happy Birthday 92nd to your mom, I wish for her a lovely day.
The variety of roses you grow is so impressive.
I was amazed that Indian Ringnecks have adapted to living year round in a colder climate. Our Buttercuo that I sometimes feature in my posts is a Lutino ( yellow color mutation) Indian Ringneck. He is now 11 years old and is indeed very hardy and goes outside with me often until Winter. Thank you for sharing that and those amazing photos of them.
Of course Hello also to the smiling "HairyBoy" . He looks like he also supervises the kitchen renovations (from the doorway) from time to time.ha ha

  28. Hello Janneke,

Happy 92nd birthday to your mom. A mom is so precious.

Like you, I love autumn roses. They present so many different shades than in spring or summer and they are valuable because we know they will soon fade. Your roses are still very attractive in spite of the rain.
In the previous post, I like very much your green house and the conservatory where you must enjoy a family lunch with a beautiful view on your garden. I never had a green house in the garden and probably will never have one.
It must be very practicable to store your plants. Do you heat it during the winter ?
Bon courage for the work in the kitchen.

Thank you very much to visit my blog regularly. It is very appreciated.

    Nice week.
