BOLLEN EN EEN BESCHILDERD EI - BULBS AND A PAINTED EGG

This week I planted the last 100 mixed tulips and put the hyacinths on their glasses. They are now in a dark corner of the basement until they are sprouting in the new year. It's always a joy to start the new year with own grown bulbs.

When I came into the basement, there was a peacock butterfly fluttering below the lamp and sat down on the wall. After the photo I put the butterfly carefully outside.

More butterflies. After visiting the exhibition of Botanical Art in the noordbrabants museum in 's Hertogenbosch with our garden club, I came home last night and found a parcel on the table wrapped in butterfly paper. In the parcel was the painted egg I ordered at Yolanda of www.komachterom.blogspot.nl. That's quick, ordered on Monday, in the house on Wednesday. Thank you for the quick delivery and the safe packing Yolanda.

The painted goose egg is a St.Nicholas gift for my 94 years old mother in the nursinghome. They have a St. Nicholas party with small presents and because she loves robins, St.Nicholas gives her this beautiful egg.  I will carefully pack it again and then it will be delivered to St. Nicholas.  The party is end of this month and of course I will be there to celebrate it with the elderly.

That's it for today. Snarf and I wish you all a very nice weekend!

ALLES DRAAIT OM SNARF EN ROZEN - IT'S ALL ABOUT SNARF AND ROSES

Another beautiful morning.  I look outside and  see a bright red glow above the glasshouses. "Come on Snarf, let's go to the riverside quickly to watch the sunrise. On our way I see a crimson ball emerge through the trees. When we are almost there, Snarf suddenly has lost his tennisball. Expectantly he looks at me, but I'm almost running to the riverside to admire and photograph the wonderful scarlet ball on the horizon. "Find the ball Snarf", but that is not that easy, she is always helping to find the ball and now she does not want to.  Of course I yield to him, time is lost, but finally he finds his ball.  Arrived at the waterside, the scarlet ball has changed in gold. A golden glow spreads over emerging clouds and reflects in the water. It seems like Snarf is enjoying too.......

"So sorry, I dropped my tennisball into the water, please get him for me, I do not dare to jump in here".

"Snarf you are such a dullard, I'll get the ball".

Snarf loves water and swimming, but also is very careful.  He shall never jump into the water from a steep side, but walk into the water until his paws don't touch the ground, then he swims. I like this caution.
However, he is served by me at his beck and call, he knows and sometimes makes abuse of me.
The fun of a border collie, they do everything for you, but also require a lot of attention. We are a good team, our motto is: "I do something for you, you do something for me".

"When you arise in the morning,
think of what a precious privilege
it is to be alive - to breathe,
to think, to enjoy, to love."
                 - Marcus Aurelius-

"Morning glory is the best name,
it always refreshes me to see it."
                         -Henry david Thoreau-

The game continues, it looks as if he is herding a flock of sheep, in reality he is focused on his tennisball.

The bridleway between the bushes along the dike is covered with a thick layer of fallen leaves. We are going home Snarf!

"The stillness of the early morning scene
enables me to take in and enjoy many things
which pass me by during the bustle of the day.
First, there are the scents, whichs seem even
more generous with their offerings
than they are in the evening."
                                -Rosemary Verey-

At home I cut the last roses of this summer.

I sort them a bit by colour. I make a combination of the orange 'Pat Austin'  with 'Peaudouce' and on the right the yellow 'Graham Thomas'.

I made a decoration of white, pinks and reds, here shown in my glass cupboard in the conservatory.

This window vase I found in a thrift shop for Euro 2,50.  Normally I would have walked past quickly, but I saw the little roses...... They won, because in my imagination I saw this vase full of real roses.

'Ghita Renaissance' in full glory and on the right 'Black Baccara' from my greenhouse, below you can see a part of  'Leonardo da Vinci'.

The red 'Paul's Scarlet' had a few flowers and 'The Fairy' continues blooming till frost arrives.

Among others you see here the white flowering 'Glamis Castle' and the ivory 'Alliance'.

One of my favorites: 'Old Blush', she has semi-double flowers with a faint fragrance. A rose which can continue flowering until December. In the past also called 'Monthly Rose', because in China she produced flowers during all months of the year. According to some people this is the rose, written about in "The Last Rose of Summer" by Thomas Moore.

With these last roses I all wish you a very happy new week!

DE TUIN 31 OKTOBER - THE GARDEN OCTOBER 31st.

- Rosa 'Tess of d'Urbervilles'-

- Rosa 'Ghita Renaissance'-

How we enjoyed the sun this last week of October! Yet another lovely weekend we could spend on the verandah with a book. With a cup of tea the Swiss life feeling came over me, what a luxury.
The garden is still flaming here and there with roses glittering like stars in the sky. Now the bugbanes (Cimicifugas) are at their best, together with the garden they slowly but sure will go out like a candle.

- Rosa 'Penny Lane'-

- Clematis 'Guernsey Cream'-

At last my Salvia guaranitica starts flowering, here you see first flower and their are many buds but I'm in doubt if these will flower before winter falls.......... This not hardy Salvia I left in open ground last winter. The plant survived the mild winter but it took some effort to get going.  For security I will take some cuttings now.

Sedum spectabile 'Herbstfreude' is a very common but a grateful strong perennial, planted on various spots in the garden.

In front of the Cimicifugas is still one beautiful blue Delphinium flower. The blue inserts beautifully with the white.

Strange, you see in the middle a totally green Hosta. However, most Hostas are coloured to yellow the last few weeks and collapsed as plum pudding.

Nooit ver van me vandaan......

Never far from me........

Geranium 'Rozanne', the best Geranium purchase I have ever done.

Rosa 'Graham Thomas' still shows a wonderful flowering branch.  This rose is already for 26 years on the same spot, now plagued by the shade of grown-up trees and shrubs. Yet this fall he puts his best foot forward, better late than never.

A question:  Why does our Ginkgo biloba never get the yellow autumn colour?  At this moment you see everywhere beautiful yellow Ginkgos, I noticed this already in the years before.  It is a beautiful, healthy tree but hardly gets an autumn colour.

Verbena bonariensis goes on flowering here and there. However, the bunnies have already gnawn a lot of stems.

Daar ga ik straks wat van plukken.

I'm going to pick some Chrysanthemums.

Veel varens blijven groen in de winter.

Many ferns remain green in winter.

This eye-cather on the gate, the Cobae scandens 'Alba' is still growing and blooming on and on.

A surprise, Magnolia 'Black Tulip' shows two wonderful shaped seedpods.  The other two Magnolias, already for 26 years in the garden, never formed seed. This 'Black Tulip' is only for the fourth year here and see......The seeds almost fall off, so I took them inside.  Next week I put them in sowing soil, I am curious.

That was the garden on October 31st.
The evening was spent in a very different way:  I was appointed as a fortune-teller at the Halloween party of eldest grandson.  There I was, face painted with black pointed hat, in a dark corner of the attick staring into my crystal ball.......
However, it was a very nice evening with lots of fun, grandma loves ghosts!
