KOM IN MIJN KAS - COME INTO MY GREENHOUSE

Toen ik afgelopen week in mijn kas bezig was met het opruimen van de tomaten-, komkommer- en paprikaplanten realiseerde ik me dat ik deze zomer vrij weinig heb laten zien van de kas.  Als het niet te hard vriest overwinteren de oleanders, agapanthussen en allerlei zomerbloeiende knollen er. Het staat dan behoorlijk vol.  In het vroege voorjaar zaai ik er van alles, van sla tot éénjarigen, vaste planten en bijzondere planten. Als de maand mei aanbreekt, wordt het leger en leger en wordt de kas schoongemaakt.  De tomatenplantjes enz. gaan dan de volle grond in.  Om de kas er ook in de zomer aantrekkelijk uit te laten zien, staan er twee niet zo gemakkelijke rozen in,  'Black Baccara' en 'Schwarze Madonna'.  Er groeit en bloeit een Jasmijn, twee Clematissen en verder nog een aantal planten in pot. 

Nu alle paprika's en tomaten weg zijn,  is de tijd aangebroken om de kas winterklaar te maken, maar er staan nog zo veel planten mooi te zijn dat ik het jammer vind om alles af te breken. 

When I was busy in my greenhouse last week pulling out tomatoe-, cucumber- and paprika-plants I realized that I have not shown much of my greenhouse this summer. If it does not freeze too hard, Oleanders, Agapanthus and all kinds of summer flowering bulbs overwinter in the crowded greenhouse. In early spring I like sowing  seeds, from vegetables to annuals, perennials and exotic plants. Most exciting is to try something new every year. When the month of May arrives the greenhouse is almost empty and then it's cleaning time.  After cleaning, the tomatoe plants and others can be planted in the soil.  To show the greenhouse in summer attractive too, there are two roses which are not easy to grow in my garden, the 'Black Baccara' and 'Schwarze Madonna'. Furthermore, two not so hardy Clematis, a Jasminum polyanthum and a number of plants in pots. 

Now all peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes have gone, it is time to make the greenhouse ready for winter, but there are still so many plants showing nicely, that it's a shame to break them down. 

Op het oude wit geverfde tafeltje staat een varen, die in de herfst naar de warme serre verhuist.

On the old white painted table is a fern, which moves to the warm conservatory in autumn.

Op de zaai- en stektafel bloeit nog een blauwe Lobelia, die zich zelf uitgezaaid heeft.

On the seeding and cutting table is still a blue annual Lobelia flowering, which has spreaded it self.

Ook op de tafel een gewone witte Pelargonium.

Also on the table a common white Pelargonium.

De Plumbago of mannentrouw staat in mijn grote terracotta hagedissenpot, die ik al weer heel lang geleden voor mijn 50ste verjaardag kreeg. De Plumbago is nog jong en doet het ook niet zo geweldig.

The Plumbago stands in my big terracotta lizard pot, which was a present for my 50th birthday long ago.  The plumbago is still a young plant and does not do great until now. 

Dit is de paarse vorm van de Asarina scandens, een leuk klimmertje waarvan ik heel veel jaren geleden een pakje zaad kocht bij Thomson & Morgan. In de koude kas bloeit ze, als het niet vriest, tot de kerst . Ik verzamel het zaad en ook als ik dat niet doe, zaait dit plantje zich zelf uit in de kas.

This is the violet one of the Asarina scandens, a sophisticated climber, of which I bought a packet of seed at Thomas & Morgan many years ago. In the cool greenhouse the Asarina produces masses of flowers until Christmas if there are no hard frosts.  I collect the seeds and even if I don't, this plant is self seeding in the greenhouse sometimes.

Achter in de kas heb ik een groep Coleus staan. Eigenlijk vind ik dit suffe kamerplanten, maar ik kon de verleiding niet weerstaan om een zakje gemixt zaad te kopen.  Dit is het resultaat, ik vind ze zelf prachtig staan achter in de kas.  Nu het herfst is, zullen ze wel snel achteruit gaan, maar ik vind ze zo leuk dat ik er over denk om ze ook maar in huis te halen zodat ik ze misschien kan overhouden tot volgend jaar.
O ja, zie je wat er op de grond groeit : slaapkamergeluk (Soleirolia soleirolii).  Ooit als kamerplantje gekocht, nu is de grond van de kas er mee bedekt.

In the back of the greenhouse I have a display of Coleus. I actually think these are dull houseplants, but I could not resist to buy a packet of mixed seeds.  This is the result, I think they are showing beautiful in the back of the greenhouse.   Now autumn has arrived, they will quickly deteriorate, but they are so pretty I shall move them into our home to try to keep them going for next year. 
O yes, do you see what is growing on the ground: baby's tears (Soleirolia soleirolii). Once bought as a small houseplant, now it is a groundcover in the greenhouse.

Dit is de Clematis florida "Alba Plena", een niet zo erg winterharde clematis.  Ongeveer 15 jaar geleden bezocht ik met 3 tuinvriendinnen de Hampton Court Flowershow, waar we allemaal deze clematis kochten. Thuisgekomen zette ik ze voor de zekerheid in de kas waar ze het goed heeft gedaan tot afgelopen winter, die heeft ze niet overleefd.  In mei van dit jaar waren we in Engeland en kocht ik weer een piepkleine nieuwe Clematis florida "Alba Plena" voor de kas waar ze goed groeit en nog laat enkele bloemen geeft.

This is the Clematis florida "Alba Plena", a not so hardy clematis. About 15 years ago 3 gardening friends and I visited the Hampton Court Flowershow, where we all bought this clematis.  At home again, I put this Clematis for security in the greenhouse where she did very well till last winter, which she did not survive.  In May of this year we were in England and I bought a very tiny new Clematis florida "Alba Plena" for the greenhouse. She is growing well and shows at this very moment some flowers.

Op de etagère aan de linkerkant van de kas staan rode Pelargoniums met daartussen enkele bontbladige Begonia's. Linksonderaan Helichrysum petiolare, gemakkelijk te vermenigvuldigen door te stekken.

On the etagere on the left side of the greenhouse are red Pelargoniums with variegated Begonias. Left below Helichrysum petiolare easily to multiply from cuttings.

Eindelijk heb ik dan een bloem in mijn Gloriosa.  Heel lang geleden had ik ook Gloriosa's van een oude schoolvriendin gekregen en die deden het geweldig en gaven veel bloemen. Uit nostalgie kocht ik vorig jaar weer een knol en pas nu heb ik slechts één bloem.

At last I have one flower in my Gloriosa.  A very long time ago (about 35 years) an old school friend gave me Gloriosa tubers and they were growing great with many flowers.  With sweet memories I bought last year one tuber of a Gloriosa. At this moment after one and a half year I have only one flower.

Zo dat was dan mijn kas op dit moment.  De deur zit dicht, ik ga naar binnen in mijn huis. En o ja, komende weken moeten ook al mijn Primula auricula's die op de etagère voor het huis staan naar de kas verhuizen.  Daar worden ze nagekeken, sommigen worden gedeeld, krijgen nieuwe grond en mest en komen op de etagère in de kas te staan tot ze gaan bloeien volgend voorjaar in april. Dat vooruitzicht is ook weer genieten!

Well this was my greenhouse at this moment.  The door is closed, I go home. Coming weeks I have to move my Primula auriculas to the greenhouse. They are now outside in the front of our house. I will check each plant, some will be divided, get new soil and fertilizer and put on the etagere in the greenhouse until flowering time in April, next spring. I can enjoy that prospect! 

EEN FAMILIE FEESTJE - A FAMILY PARTY

Omdat we afgelopen zaterdag iets te vieren hadden, werden er extra bloemen uit de tuin geplukt, gebakken en gekookt.  Voor mijn oven en kookplaat waren het de laatste loodjes en die wogen het zwaarst, maar nu mogen ze gerust het loodje leggen, want binnenkort wordt de keuken gerenoveerd. Vanavond is mijn man begonnen alles er uit te slopen, dus de komende tijd wordt het behelpen in de kelder en op de veranda. De magnetron zal meer dan ooit gebruikt worden. Maar ja we moeten wat over hebben voor een mooi betegelde vloer, een goed werkend fornuis, een mooi gestukadoorde muur i.p.v. de jaren zeventig schrootjes en niet te vergeten, een afwasmachine.  Nooit wilde ik aan een afwasmachine, vond het onzin, maar door de jaren heen kregen we steeds vaker grotere gezelschappen te eten,  gewoon omdat ik het steeds leuker ben gaan vinden om te koken. Dus nu zie ik het meest uit naar de afwasmachine, want opgeruimd staat netjes.
Daarom heb ik zaterdag voor kinderen en kleinkinderen nog één keer uitgebreid gekookt. De volgende keer dat ik dat doe, is het wellicht december.

Because we had to celebrate something last Saturday, I picked extra flowers from the garden and spent time with baking and cooking.  For my oven and hob it was about the last time, they are in bad condition, worn-out. Within short time the kitchen will be renovated.  Tonight my husband started to demolish, so coming weeks I have to manage cooking and washing up in the basement or on the veranda, I think the magnetron will be used more than ever. But when it is ready I hope to have a beautiful tiled floor, a perfect working stove, a stuccoed wall instead of paneling from the seventies,and last but not least a dishwasher. I never wanted a dishwasher, thought it was nonsense,but over the years I invited more and more friends for dinner, just because I have more time and fun in cooking. So I am looking forward to my dishwasher.......
That is why I have been cooking dinner for children and grandchildren last Saturday, for next time may be in December.

Ik maakte de bloemen standaard op met verse hortensia's en klimop uit de tuin. Zoals je ziet, vormen zich bij de hortensia's naast de gedroogde bloemen, nog steeds nieuwe bloemen. Die heb ik er dus lekker tussen uit geplukt.  Gedroogde bloemen kunnen we later in het seizoen nog genoeg gebruiken.

I made the flower stand with fresh Hydrangeas and Hedera from the garden.  As you can see, the Hydrangeas continue to form fresh flowers in addition to the dried flowers. I have cut these away from it. We can use the dried flowers long enough later in the season.

Maar wat stond er op het menu ?  Vooruit dan maar :

EIND SEPTEMBER - THE END OF SEPTEMBER

De laatste dagen van september zijn aangebroken, het is rustig weer en niet koud, 's morgens vaak mistig of grijs en later op de dag komt de zon er door. Na een tijdje van relatieve rust in de tuin, begint het nu toch weer te kriebelen, wat kan ik al vast gaan opruimen?  Straks als het koud en guur is, wordt het toch minder aantrekkelijk om uren buiten bezig te zijn. Hoewel ik heel wat planten laat staan voor het wintersilhouet, blijven er genoeg over die beter afgeknipt kunnen worden ter compostering.  En zo wordt er menig kruiwagen afgevoerd. Weet je wat het grappige hiervan is, er vallen geen noemenswaardige gaten, het valt gewoon niet op in de tuin. Het blijft een bloeiende wildernis, alsof ik helemaal niets doe, maar niets is minder waar, de composthoop wordt wel degelijk hoger en hoger.

Ook staat er nog van alles in bloei, laten we maar weer eens een rondje tuin doen.

The last days of September have arrived, the weather is quiet and not cold at all, in the morning often misty or just grey and later on the day the sun comes through. After a period of relative rest in the garden, it is now starting to itch again, what can I go to clean up. Later when it is cold and bleak, it will be less attractive to be busy outside for hours and hours.  Although lots of plants are untouched for the winter silhouette, there are many others which better can be cut down for the compostheap.  And thus many wheelbarrows full of green waste are discharged. Do you know what is so funny, you almost cannot see any gaps, you do not notice there is something removed out of  the garden.  It is still one blooming wilderness, as if I do nothing at all, but that is not true, the compost pile gets higher and higher.  Lots of flowers are still there, let's once again do a round in the garden. 

De bloeiende rozen over het hek zijn nu plaatselijk overgenomen door Clematis orientalis 'Golden Tiara', een laatbloeiende soort die het geweldig goed doet.

The blooming summer roses on the fence are temporary locally taken over by Clematis orientalis 'Golden Tiara', a late-flowering species which is growing and showing great. 

De clematis groeit zelfs in de perenboom langs het hek. Het is nog een jonge boom die al aardig wat stoofperen draagt, de Gieser Wildeman.

This clematis is even growing into the peartree along the fence.  It is still a young tree which already bears quite a few cooking pears, the Gieser Wildeman.

Hier de éénjarige vurig gekleurde Tithonia rotundifolia 'Torch' vóór de Miscanthus sinensis. Deze dominante éénjarige zie je zelden in Nederlandse tuinen. Het zal er wel mee te maken hebben dat het warmteminnende Mexicanen zijn, ze worden dan ook Mexicaanse zonnebloemen genoemd. In april heb ik ze voorgezaaid in de kas en pas eind mei in de volle grond gezet op een zonnige plaats. Dit jaar hadden we het geluk van een prachtige zomer dus groeiden deze vrolijkerds tot meer dan anderhalve meter hoog. Ze bloeien nog vrolijk door tot dat het echt te koud gaat worden.

This is the orange colored annual Tithonia rotundifolia 'Torch' in front of the Miscanthus sinensis.  This dominating annual you rarely see in Dutch gardens. It will have to do with that they are heat-loving Mexicans, the so called Mexican Sunflower.  I sowed them in the greenhouse in April and only end of May I put them in the soil on a sunny spot.  This year we were so lucky to have a beautiful summer, so these cheerful flowers grew up to a height of more than one and a half meter. They are still blooming prolific until it will be too cold.  

Bij het mini-vijvertje groeit de Erigeron karvinskianus, een lieverdje, die ik niet meer zou willen missen.
Ze zijn niet winterhard, maar zaaien zich altijd wel ergens uit zodat je nooit zonder hoeft te zitten.

At the mini pond grows the Erigeron karvinskianus, a sweety that I should not want to miss. This plant is not hardy, but they always sow themselves somewhere, so  you never have to be without. 

De Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' vind ik ook een prachtige vaste zonnebloem. Ze staat hier aan het eind van de gele border op een schaduwrijke plek onder de Catalpa en vóór de composthoop. Ja, U heeft het goed gelezen, deze zonaanbidder staat bij mij in de schaduw en doet het prima.   Het citroen geel licht hier heerlijk op.

The Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is for me a beautiful perennial sunflower.  She is situated at the end of the yellow border on a shady spot near the Catalpa and in front of the compost pile.  Yes, you read it correct, this sunlover stands in my garden in the shade and is doing very well. The pretty lemon yellow lightens this dark spot wonderful. 

Mijn harige vriend probeert mij hier over te halen voor een spelletje.  Met zijn nimmer aflatende energie, houdt mij altijd bezig. Ik ben zijn bazin, het lijkt echter alsof hij de baas wil spelen, dat is echter schijn, wij zijn een twee éénheid, hij doet wat voor mij, ik doe wat voor hem.

My hairy friend tries to pursuade me for a game.  With his unfailing energy, he always keeps me busy. I am his boss, it seems he wants to play the boss, that is only apparent, we are a two unit, he does something for me, I do something for him.

De varens beginnen al bruin te worden. / Ferns are already turning brown.

De Nicandra physaloides of in gewoon Nederlands het zegelkruid heb ik jaren geleden eens gezaaid. Als ik in het vroege voorjaar eigengemaakte compost op de tuin strooi, komen er soms leuke verrassingen op. Deze zaailing van het zegelkruid staat aan de rand van een groep hortensia's en groeit over het pad.

The Nicandra physaloides is an annual I have sown once many years ago.  When I use my home made compost in the garden in early spring, there sometimes show up pretty surprises.  This seedling of the Nicandra is on the border of a group of Hydrangeas and grows over the path.
  

De Anemonen 'Honorine Jobert' bloeien inmiddels weelderig, de groepen ervan worden elk jaar groter en omringen de rozen 'Glamis Castle' die ook niet van opgeven willen weten.

In the meantime, the Anemones 'Honorine Jobert' are blooming lush, the groups of plants grow bigger each year and surround the roses 'Glamis Castle'  which do not give up yet too.    

Dit jaar heb ik ook weer eens Cosmea's gezaaid. Ze zijn betrekkelijk laat gaan bloeien maar zullen doorgaan totdat de vorst invalt.  Cosmea's groeien wat wild op maar zijn dankbare snijbloemen.

This year I also sowed Cosmeas. They began flowering rather late but will continue until the frost comes.  My Cosmeas grow wild on but are grateful cuttingflowers.

Ik eindig dit keer met een heerlijk boek van de beroemde Zwitserse schrijver en dichter Hermann Hesse over zijn tuin. Een groot deel van zijn leven bezat Hermann Hesse een eigen tuin, waarin hij schilderde en mediteerde. Tussen de bloemen, struiken en bomen deed hij inspiratie op voor zijn boeken. "In de tuin"  is een verzameling beschouwingen en gedichten over de vreugde die aan een tuin te beleven is en over de rust die uitgaat van het leven in harmonie met de natuur. Het is daarmee een van Hesse's meest inpirerende boeken.

In het boek staat o.a. een gedicht over de maand september, wat als volgt luidt :

September

De tuin verkilt

En regen vult de bloemen af,

De zomer rilt

En nadert stilletjes zijn graf.

Goud druppelt blad voor blad

Neer van de hoge acaciaboom.

Zomer glimlacht verbaasd en mat

In de stervende tuinendroom.

I finish this time with a very nice book of the famous Swiss writer and poet Hermann Hesse about his garden.  A large part of his life Hermann Hesse had a private garden, in which he painted and meditated.  Between the flowers, shrubs and trees he took inspiration for his books.  "In the garden" is a collection of reflections and poems about the joy the garden gives and about the peace posed by living in harmony with nature. It is one of Hesse's most inspiring books.

In this book is a poem about the month of September which sounds as follows :

September

The garden is in mourning, 
Cool rain seeps into the flowers.
Summertime shudders
quietly awaiting his end.

Golden leaf after leaf falls
from the tall acacia tree.
Summer smiles, astonished and feeble,
at his dying dream of a garden.

For just a while he tarries
beside the roses, yearning for repose.
Slowly he closes
his weary eyes.
