NARCISSEN OVERVLOED - DAFFODIL GALORE

Vorige week zeurde ik nog dat mijn Narcissen bestand achteruit ging omdat ik zo weinig knoppen zag en nu na een week waarin de natuur een groeispurt nam, zijn ze er gewoon allemaal weer.  Ongelofelijk dat ik elk voorjaar wel een moment heb, dat ik denk dat het niet meer goed komt, hoe dom kun je zijn: de natuur herstelt zichzelf weer, en soms zelfs razendsnel.

Ik begin met een foto van een nieuwe aanwinst, de "Sunny Girlfriend", waarvan de perzik kleur de aandacht trekt. 

Last week I was still whining that my file of daffodils declined because I saw less buds than the years before and now after a week in which nature took a growth spurt, they are all there again.  Unbelievable, every spring I have a moment I think it does not come alright this time, how stupid you can be:  nature repairs itself, and sometimes rapidly.

I start with a photo of a new addition, the "Sunny Girlfriend", of which the peach colour is very attractive.

Door de jaren heen heb ik heel wat verschillende soorten verzameld, helaas heb ik de namen ervan niet onthouden en zou ik ze in catalogi of boeken moeten na gaan zoeken, dat doen we dus even niet.

By the years I collected quite a few daffodils of which I don't remember the names or I should find out by looking in my old catalogues or books, but not today. 

Aan de buitenkant van het hek in de berm staat een lange rij van Narcissen, Leucojums en Hyacinthoides non-scripta's. In de zomer bloeien hier de klimrozen en Clematissen.

Along the road I have a long row of Daffodils, Leucojums and Bluebells which are flowering in May. In summer you see here the climbing Roses and Clematis.

Natuurlijk heb ik ze ook weer naar binnen gehaald en zoals elk jaar als er veel soorten tegelijk bloeien zet ik een drietal van dezelfde Narcissen in flesjes en glazen op een tafel.

Of course I cut a lot of daffodils for decorating and like every year when I have many different cultivars at the same time in bloom, I put three of them in bottles or glasses on a table.

Toen ik de vaasjes op tafel zette, viel er een lieve heersbeestje uit de bloemen, die mocht ook even op de foto voordat ik hem zijn vrijheid buiten op de bloemen teruggaf.

When I put the vases on the table, a ladybug dropped on the tablecloth, after the picture he got back his freedom on the flowers outside.

En na de fotosessie zullen we er zo nog bijna een week binnen van kunnen genieten.

And after the photo session we shall enjoy these daffodils for almost a week inside.

HET VOORJAAR LAAT ZICH ZIEN - SPRING SHOWS.

Met horten en stoten is de temperatuur afgelopen week omhoog gegaan naar normale waarden in deze tijd van het jaar.  En wat een vreugde we hebben ook wat regen gekregen, onmisbaar voor de groei, het gedijen van alle leven op aarde.  

We zien de tuin opfleuren, of beter gezegd groen worden, bloemen openen zich langzaam. De narcissen zijn dit jaar niet alleen veel later, het lijkt wel of er minder zijn, maar wat nog niet is kan nog wel komen.  

Toen ik op een morgen terugkwam van mijn vroege wandeling met Snarf, stond er langs het hek wel een bijzonder narcisje te bloeien, de Rip van Winkle.  Ik kan niet zeggen of ik deze zo mooi vind, in elk geval wel anders.  Het is al een oudje van voor 1884 en komt oorspronkelijk uit Ierland.  Het is een miniatuurtje met gevulde bloemen. Zowel trompetje als de kelkblaadjes zijn verdeeld in smalle stukjes.

Onder de bollenkwekers zijn de meningen verdeeld over dit narcisje, sommigen noemen het minachtend paardenbloemen, waar ze inderdaad iets van weg hebben.

By fits and starts temperature went up to normal values last week.  And what a joy, we also got some rain, indispensable for growth, the thrive of life on earth.

We see our gardens alive again, buds are opening slowly.  The Narcissus are not only late this year, it seems if I have less, but what is not there, may come lateron.  

When I returned one morning from my walk with Snarf, along the fence a characteristic daffodil was flowering, the Rip van Winkle.  I cannot say that I like this one very much, anyway it is different.  This Narcissus is a very old one, before 1884 and originates from Ireland.  It is a mini daffodil with filled flowers. The little trumpet as well as the sepals are separated in pieces.  Bulbgrowers have different opinions about this little Rip van Winkle, some call it disparaging dandelions, and yes in some or another way they look like dandelions.

De heester hierboven is een Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii', die voorzichtig begint uit te lopen. Deze Viburnum heeft al heel wat meegemaakt maar daar vertel ik over als hij in bloei staat.

The shrub on above picture is a Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii', starting to show leaves and buds.  This Viburnum has a long history in my garden, which I shall tell when it is flowering next month.

De Forsythia is ook afgelopen week tot bloei gekomen, bijzonder laat. Er wordt wel gezegd dat je de rozen kunt gaan snoeien als de Forsythia bloeit, dat klopt eigenlijk wel. Ik heb de meeste rozen echter al in maart gesnoeid, de laatste heb ik gisteren gedaan en de klimrozen weer netjes opgebonden.

At last the Forsythia started flowering last week, particularly late.  They say you can start pruning roses when the Forsythia flowers, that's right actually but I pruned almost all my roses in March, the last ones I did yesterday and tying up all my climbing roses.

Dit is een spruit van een boompioen, ondanks de vorst zitten er weer veel knoppen in.

This is a shoot of a tree peony, despite the long frost there are lots of flower buds.

Toen ik op het grindpad langs de vaart kwam, stonden er al enkele blauwe druifjes in het grind te bloeien, dit zijn zaailingen van de bolletjes die naast het pad staan.

When I walked on the gravel path along the canal there were already some blue Grape Hyacinths in the gravel flowering, these are seedlings of the bulbs, planted long ago along the path.

Tja en dan kom ik dit tegen, gistermiddag gestopt met het snoeien van dood hout uit de hortensia's en het ontdoen van de oude bloemen, dus ligt dit voor mijn neus.  Nog even verder op mijn inspectie ronde en dan weer aan de slag.

Yes, and then I see above mess, yesterday afternoon I had to stop suddenly cutting dead wood and deadheading the Hydrangeas. I have to hurry up my garden walk to go to work again.

Gelukkig beginnen de meeste rozen behoorlijk uit te lopen, dit is één van mijn ouderwetse rozen, Madame Legras de St. Germain, een prachtige witte. Het ziet er weer veelbelovend uit.

I feel so happy to see all those new shoots on my roses, above picture is of one of my historic roses, Madame Legras de St. Germain, a beautiful white flowering one.  It looks so promissing.

De Prunus ceracifera 'Nigra' is ook buitengewoon laat. Deze bloeit normaal eind februari, dit jaar begint hij voorzichtig op 10 april.

The Prunus ceracifera 'Nigra'  is extra-ordinary late too.  This tree flowers here normally end of February, this year it starts carefully on April 10th. 

Ik heb geen bijzondere Pulmonaria soorten in mijn tuin, alleen het gewone longkruid, ik vind het toch altijd weer mooi en ga er binnenkort  boeketjes voor op de schoorsteenmantel van maken.

I don't have special Pulmonaria cultivars in my garden, only the ordinary lungwort, I think it is very nice and one of these days I shall make small bouquets for on the mantelpiece.

Dit is de Corylopsis pauciflora met haar zachtgele bloemetjes.  Helaas lijkt het of deze heester na 24 jaar onze tuin opgefleurd te hebben, aan haar einde is.  Er zitten veel dode bemoste takken in.

Above is the Corylopsis pauciflora with soft yellow flowers.  It looks as if this shrub is at the end of her life after 24 happy years in my garden. There are lots of dead mossy branches in it.

De bosanemoontjes bloeien weer volop en bedekken op verschillende plekken in de tuin de grond.

The little wood anemones are in full bloom and cover the ground on several places in the garden.

Tot de werkzaamheden behoorden deze week ook het uitplanten in potjes van diverse zaailingen, o.a. Lobelia's 'Cambridge Blue', nog meer Delphiniums (ben gek van Delphiniums en kan er niet genoeg van hebben), tomaatjes, violen en lathyrus.  En komende weken zal er nog heel wat opgepot worden, want de serre tafel staat vol zaailingen.

Last week I did a lot of potting up in the greenhouse, Lobelias 'Cambridge Blue', more Delphiniums (I am mad with Delphiniums and can never have enough of them), tomatoes, pansies and sweet peas.  Coming weeks I have to pot up lots of more seedlings which are still on the table in the conservatory.

Langs het hek beginnen de Leucojum vernum, lente klokjes, ook te bloeien.  Daar ben ik blij mee. Andere jaren zijn de de Leucojum aestivum, de zomerklokjes deze altijd de baas.  De beide soorten staan langs het hek, maar de zomerklokjes worden veel hoger, tot wel 50 cm. en is een prachtige snijbloem, maar ze bloeien vaak gelijktijdig en overheersen dan het toch ook mooie lenteklokje.

Along the fence the Leucojum vernum, Spring Snowflakes, start flowering. I am very glad with them.  Other years the Leucojum aestivum, Summer Snowflakes, are always in charge.  Both varieties are along the fench, but the Summer Snowflakes grow bigger, till about 50 cm. and are beautiful cuttingflowers. These two, often are together in bloom at the same time and the Summer Snowflake predominates over the yet beautiful Spring Snowflake.

BLAUWBEKKEN - BLUE SHIVERINGS

Puschkinia scilloides libanotica

Vanmorgen weer lekker blauwbekken buiten met Snarf, de wind was weer opgestoken en temperaturen om het vriespunt en dat allemaal in april. In de tuin doe ik nu dus even weinig of niets, maar om werk zit ik niet verlegen want regelmatig ontwerp ik nog tuinen. Zo maakte ik vorige week een beplantingsplan voor een cliënt. Vanmorgen bracht ik de tekening in 3-voud weg maar hier ging wel een bijna ramp aan vooraf.  Nadat de tekening klaar en gekopieerd was, stopte ik deze in mijn werktas, maar er stak een stukje van de rol bovenuit. Gisteravond was ik in de keuken eten aan het koken en liet Snarf binnen die direct doorrende naar de serre waar mijn man F. de krant las. En toen gebeurde het,  mijn harige vriend pakte ongemerkt de rol papier uit de tas en installeerde zich hiermee op de bank.  F. zag net op tijd dat er iets niet pluis was en kon de tekeningen redden van een gewisse ondergang in snippers. Alles even glad gestreken en laten drogen van het honden kwijl.  Zo kon ik ze vanmorgen toch nog afleveren.

This morning it was shivering cold outside on my walk with Snarf, the wind had come up again, temperatures around zero and that all in April. I cannot do much of gardening now, but I am not stuck to work,  for occasionally I still design gardens.  Last week I made a plantingscheme for a customer. Today I delivered the drawing in 3-fold but pre to this I almost had a disaster.  After copying the scheme, I put it into my bag, but just a piece of the roll of paper arose from the bag. Last night I was cooking dinner and I let in Snarf from outside who directly ran to the conservatory where F. (my husband) was reading the newspaper.  And then it happened, my hairy friend took unnoticed the roll out of the bag and installed himself with it on the couch.  F. saw just in time there was something defenitely wrong and saved my drawings of a certain ruin into shreds.  I just smoothed and dried everything of dog drool and could be glad to deliver the drawings to my customer this morning.

Het beplantingsplan / The plantingscheme

Deze bijna 11-jarige heeft zijn streken nog niet verleerd.

This almost 11 year old has not yet forgotten his tricks.

Op de  terugweg kwam ik langs een klein tuincentrum waar ik nog nooit was geweest, dus even naar binnen.
En wat hadden ze daar : één van mijn favoriete tuingereedschappen, de bamboe grashark en deze kost slechts Euro 1,95.  Voor mij gaat er niets boven een grashark van bamboe, de sterkere metalen versie werkt lang niet zo prettig en goed. Deze bamboeharken gaan slechts enkele jaren mee maar kosten ook niet veel.  Waarom ben ik hiermee zo blij?  De laatste jaren waren ze hier nauwelijks meer verkrijgbaar en moest ik het doen met een hark waar allemaal stukken vanaf waren, toch liet ik die ijzeren hark liever binnen staan.
Bij dit tuincentrum hadden ze ook een bloemenhoek en dat bracht me aan het twijfelen, ik koop nooit bloemen, gebruik uitsluitend materiaal uit de tuin of natuur.  Maar na de vondst van die hark en het feit dat de mensen zeer tevreden waren met het beplantingsplan wilde ik mezelf verrassen met blauwe anemoontjes om thuis een "blauw van de kou" stukje te schrijven.  Die hadden ze dus niet, maar ze hadden wel witte Freesia's en die geurden zo aantrekkelijk dat ik visioenen kreeg van een huis vol bloemengeur.
Thuisgekomen eerst een rondje tuin met Snarf.  Daar ontdekte ik toch ook nog wat blauwe bloemen.

On my way back I passed a small garden centre where I never had been before.  Of course I paid a visit and what did they sell:  one of my favourite garden tools, the bamboo rake and only for Euro 1,95.  For me nothing beats a bamboo grass rake, the stronger metal version is not so pleasant and good in use, I think. These bamboo rakes do not last many years but they are inexpensive.  Why I am so glad with this rake?  The last few years they were hardly to obtain and I had to manage with an old one missing bits and pieces, yet I preferred to leave the iron one in the shed. 
In this garden centre they also had a flower corner with cutting flowers and  this made me hesitating, I never buy flowers, only use material from own garden or nature.  But with the find of the rake and the fact that people were very satisfied with my plantingscheme, I wanted to surprise myself with blue anemones to make at home a "blue of cold" blogpost. Unfortunately they sold no anemones, but they had white Freesias with a lovely scent which I could not resist.  I had visions of a house full of floral scent out of another world.  At home I first made a walk around the garden with Snarf.  There I discovered yet some real blue flowers.

De Puschkinia libanotica, genoemd naar Count Puschkin die diverse planten verzamelde in de Kaukasus en stierf in 1805. De herkomst is Turkije en Centraal en West Azië.  Het is een  leuk klein bolgewasje dat al vele jaren in de tuin staat en goed verwilderd.  De mooie lichtblauwe bloemetjes hebben een donkerblauwe streep op elk bloemblad.  De bloemen verschijnen in trosjes aan de top van de bloemstengel.

The Puschkinia libanotica is called to Count Puschkin who collected various plants in the Kaukasus and died in 1805.  The origin is Turkey and Central and West Asia.  The silver-blue flowered bulbs are sometimes called Striped Squill and grow already for many years in my garden. The individual pale blue flowers are attractive and worthy of closer inspectation, since each perianth segment has a dark blue line along its centre.

De alom bekende Vinca minor of kleine maagdenpalm begint op zonnige plekjes ook al te bloeien. Dit is een snel groeiende sterke wintergroene vaste plant voor zon en schaduw en is een goede bodembedekker met mooie bloemen. De blauwe vorm is het meest gangbaar er zijn echter ook witte en paarse cultivars.  Maagdenpalm vormt een goede combinatie met tal van andere planten en bollen.

The well-known Vinca minor or dwarf periwinkle starts flowering on sunny spots.  This is a fast growing strong evergreen perennial for sun and shadow and is a good groundcover with pretty flowers.  The blue form is most common, but there are also white and purple varieties. 
You can use periwinkle in combination  with lots of other plants and bulbs. 

De Scilla siberica, oftewel sterhyacintje, afkomstig uit Siberië, hoewel de meningen hierover verdeeld zijn. Er zijn bronnen die vermelden dat het originele verspreidingsgebied Midden Rusland en Turkije is. Dit bolgewasje is prima geschikt voor verwildering want de bolletjes vermeerderen gemakkelijk en bovendien zaaien ze zich zelf uit.  In onze tuin lijkt het alsof ze na een aantal jaren groei nu weer aan het verminderen zijn, hoewel ze beginnen nog maar net uit de grond te komen en dit zijn de eerste bloemetjes. Ze worden ook niet hoger dan een centimeter of 15 en bloeien met helderblauwe knikkende bloempjes.

The Scilla siberica, originating from Russia and Turkey spread quickly and can cover a lot of ground. The tiny bulbs grow and multiple easily and the plants will also self-seed.  In our garden it looks as if after many years increasing numbers of plants, they are slowly decreasing now, but they just showed the first flowers and many on their way I hope. The plants don't get much taller than about 5 inches and the star- or bell-shaped blue flowers nod and droop on their short stems.

Dan lopen we nog even naar de kas waar de blauwe violen al klaar staan om naar buiten op tafel gezet te worden.
Then we go to the greenhouse to look at the pansies which are ready to go outside on the tables.

Nu staan er alleen op het kleine tafeltje naast de keukendeur op de veranda wat blauwe druifjes, die had ik daar voor de Pasen neergezet maar ze moeten eigenlijk nog beginnen met bloeien.  In de tuin komen de knopjes nog nauwelijks te voorschijn.

For Easter I put some Muscari, Grape hyacinths on the small table near the kitchen door on the verandah but they are not yet in full bloom.  In the garden they hardly show their buds. 

We gaan naar binnen in mijn blauwe keuken,  waar op deze foto alle voorbereidingen  klaar staan om in de serre op tafel gezet te worden voor de Paas thee met kinderen en kleinkinderen.  Deze foto is dus van enige dagen geleden.
Nu ga ik eerst mijn nieuwe Freesia's op water zetten in mijn blauwe bollenglazen en dan ga ik lekker theedrinken uit mijn allermooiste blauwe Zwiebelmuster serviesje van Hutschenreuter op mijn blauwe bloemen tafellaken uit Madeira en dan ga ik me te goed doen aan de restjes van Pasen.

Then we enter my blue kitchen, where on above picture preparations for Easter afternoon tea with children and grandchildren, are ready to transport to the table in the conservatory.  You understand this picture is a few days old.
But now I am putting my new Freesias on water in my  blue bulbvases and then I shall have a nice cup of tea, using my most beautiful blue Zwiebelmuster china of Hutschenreuter on my blue flowered tablecloth from Madeira and I 'm going to feast on the left overs of Eastermonday.  

Ik pak er ook nog een paar blauwe boeken bij over blauwe planten en ga daar lekker in zitten neuzen. Mijn dag is weer goed, dit keer met een koud blauw randje.

I take some blue books about blue plants from my library and go nosing and browsing comfortably in it. My day is good again, this time with a cold blue edge.
