KERSTDINER TUINCLUB - CHRISTMAS DINNER GARDEN CLUB.

For last Wednesday I invited the 19 ladies of our gardenclub for a Christmas dinner to conclude another garden year. You understand that this was preceded by lots of preparations, this number I can just manage to sit on one long table setting in our room.  I started Saturday before with the decorations, for which I used the stands for table pieces, so pleasant to use on tables, at least they don´t obstruct the view of the table during conversations. For the decorations I mainly used green from the garden and flowers and berries of the Viburnum tinus, which is showing beautiful in the garden at this moment.  Some bought red roses and eucalyptus completed the picture.

To the base of the stand I made a wreath using the same material as for the crown.

By the end of the weekend we moved the interior. Tables and chairs went to other rooms and  the stored old meeting tables from the garage put together.  Monday I set the tables and Tuesday I made preparations for cooking. When you get many guests for dinner and do it all by yourself you need a structured proceeding.

Of course not everything went smoothly, sometimes unexpected things happen, also during cooking.
Tuesday morning I was peeling and dicing celery tubers, at once I heard a strange noise in the diningroom, a quick look made me nervous, a relatively young blue tit swooped past my wine glasses on the table. That day we had mild and sunny weather so the kitchendoor wide open. The blue tit flew inside unnoticed.  I carefully tried to approach the blue tit with a towel in my hand, the bird fluttering against the window and in a corner I got him. With the bird in the towel I went outside on the porch and he flew merrily away.  He is likely to feast again nicely in the peanut butter jar on a pole of the porch.

When soup was ready I started with the game stew. I had to chop 750 gr. of sjallots, tears were rolling down my cheeks. There was a knock on the window, the parcel service was there to sign for a parcel. I apologized that I looked so weepy.  The good man came with this wonderful tip: "A mouthful of water madam, do not swallow before you are finished, and you shall never have tearing eyes chopping onions". I thought it very special and could not help laughing.  Lateron I googled it on the internet and indeed this tip was there with many other miracle remedies.

I was glad Snarf was quiet that day, he is getting older and does not make so many caprioles in the house anymore, certainly not with so many chairs and tables.

This time we have a small space-saving Christmas tree with root ball. After Christmas it goes into the garden and who knows we can use it next year again.  If not, no problem, when we are getting really old we have our garden full of Christmas trees, labour saving, convenient right?

In the conservatory the dessert is on the table. Again no photos of the dishes, I always forget, chatting and serving dinner goes not well together. The last photos I took with my ipad and are of a very bad quality, I just show you that it was real and very enjoyable.
Next year we will celebrate our 25th anniversary and many of us are member from the first hour. 25 years long, 12 times a year a garden visit or meeting creates a special friendship, we certainly will celebrate.  Dear ladies thank you very much for your presence, your sweet words, attentions and above all the cosiness, I've very much enjoyed.

Just for the record, this was the menu:

Starter with Kir Royal and amuse of mackeral cream and celery or smoked salmon.

Celery cream soup.

Games stew of deer, hare and wild boar
Mashed potatoes
Red cabbage with apples
Cranberry compote.

Christmas ice cake with raspberries
Cinnamon ice and cream
English Christmas trifle.

Coffee - After eight.
    .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

FIJNE KERSTDAGEN.

I'm not sure I will be back here before Christmas, so I wish all my followers and other readers of this blog

MERRRY CHRISTMAS.

TUIN EN BOEKEN - GARDEN AND BOOKS

Last Saturday we celebrated St.Nicholas with children and grandchildren. To my great surprise I was given the book on top of my wishlist: Oudolf Hummelo.
This is the book about Piet Oudolf, his work and how he conquered the world as garden designer and perennial grower with pioneering planting designs where ecological aspects are paramount.
Author and friend Noel Kingsbury tells about how he started in Hummelo, how he and his wife Anja forms a strong team and wich colleagues have been decisive for his always innovative planting schemes in countries like The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and the US.  He was inter alia responsible for top projects like the High Line and the Battery in New York and on the Trentham Estate in England he designed rivers of grass and a floral labyrinth.

I promised myself to keep the book for reading during Christmas when we are at home, but I could not resist to start reading and yes, I continued reading.  The book is reading like a success story and by means of a lot of colour photographs and planting schemes, his changed view of planting over the past 30 years is clear. It is a must for all gardeners, professional and hobbyists.

From Piet Oudolf back to our own garden. In the conservatory the various cuttings of Pelargoniums, Salvias and hardy Fuchsias are doing well. On such a sunny day as yesterday it's nice and warm in the conservatory, good for growth.  Now we go outside.

Prunus subhirtella autumnalis shows his flowers against a blue sky.

The Cologne pots and other stuff on the shelves of the garden terrace have moved inside. The wreaths and deer can stick around.

Oudolf grasses?

There is still hither and thither a rose blossom, this is the rose 'White Wings', a beauty in summer, but also now still rather pretty.

And what to say about this, a messy flower of the rose 'Honorine de Brabant' but unique in December.

In December I see actually rather rose hips than flowers in the roses.

En kijk, langs de Taxus haag is mijn eerste Helleborus in bloei gekomen.

And look. along the yew hedge my first Hellebore flower.

Hartelijk dank Madelief!

Then I walk to the mailbox and what a surprise, there is a parcel. It's the give-away I won on Madelief's blog, I'm so happy with the book. As my most followers probably will know, Madelief has a lovely, colourful blog, where she among others shows us her vintage tea parties, her cheerful garden and her love for England, see www.madeliefje-madelief.blogspot.nl.

It was the first time I joined a give-away because I did not know the book and I'm curious about these special women about their gardens in Germany. Here it's usually all about English women gardeners.
I browsed just quickly through the book which I certainly will enjoy. Thank you so much Madelief!

DE TUIN BEGIN DECEMBER - THE GARDEN IN THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER.

My end of the month gardenpost is this time a beginning of the month post. The last days of November were too bad to make photos outside. We got rain and storm over us. Today and yesterday fortunately a little better, but still rainy and gray but normal for the time of year. First photo I took from the stairs of the verandah, as you can see the Oleanders are still outside and as long as we have no severe frost they stay there.
Despite wind and rain there are some reasonable looking roses, these are the super strong ones, like Rosa 'Leonardo da Vinci', who always shows some flowers from early summer to late autumn. As most of the Meilland roses they unfortunately have no fragrance.

On the left of the path is Flora with a background of ivy and in summer the rose 'Guirlande d 'Amour'. On the right side you look through the pyramids of boxwood to the lawn. I'm glad there are rather a lot of evergreens in the garden so that the wintergarden is not one and all sadness. As you can see the blackbirds have not yet picked all holly berries, perhaps there are enough left for my Christmas decorations the coming weeks.

Somber weer, sombere foto's.

Gloomy weather, gloomy pictures. The Larix has almost lost all needles, some roses however, still have their leaves and the rose 'Peaudouce', even shows a nice bud.

There were still some beautiful late Delphinium flowers, the weather made an abrupt end to this.

A thick layer of Ginkgo leaves, among which these green ferns show nicely.

Mijn vriend houdt me altijd in de gaten  -  My friend always keeps an eye on me.

And sure enough there is still a beautiful neat rose of 'Winchester Cathedral'.

Among th many withered Hydrangeas are still beautiful specimens.

Viburnum tinus is the shrub of the month, with buds, flowers and berries.

Witch hazel 'Jelena'  is pretty but too early blooming.

A strange sensation, roses and wicth hazels flowering at the same time. This is Rosa 'Glamis Castle' next to the witch hazel.

A look into the greenhouse where one of the Primula auriculas shows a flower.

Where bric-à-brac and baskets are hanging on the beams.

Along the canal are still many pretty looking Hydrangeas.

Okay Snarf, I'm coming, we have done our round again and go inside.

Inside I have the high whatnot with Hydrangeas, next week it's going back to the greenhouse to make room for Christmas decorations.

Help, ik ontdekte een groene stinkwants.

Help, I discovered a green stinkbug.
