THE LEPRECHAUNS - THE LADIES OF THE GARDEN CLUB

January is the month of a new start, also for our garden club.  Yesterday 17 of 20 garden ladies came together to make plans for a new gardening year.  This time the meeting was at my home.  We started with coffee or tea and of course cakes, then we had a review of last year's trips, our financial status, transport arrangements, and especially new ideas for the coming garden season.  At the end the glass was levied on 2015 and there were plenty of delicious snacks brought by the ladies.

Let me introduce our garden club.  We are a group of 20 garden ladies who come together every second Wednesday of the month and that already more than 23 years long, to view and discuss each other and other's peoples gardens. The lady in the middle, second of the right was the founder of our garden club on October 9th, 1991, and we still are together with the same people.  So sad, some members deceased over the years, therefore new ladies had to be introduced and they also feel at home at our club.

The name of our club is 'Leprechauns', they often stumble upon when making appointments. Our oldest garden club member, which has passed away already, invented this name and at that time we all agreed, we thought it a dignified and interesting name, haha, sounds more posh than just garden gnomes, for that's what we are.
A leprechaun is a gnome from Irish folklore. Originally leprechauns are a mischievous and intelligent folk, generally harmless to the general population, although they are known to play the odd trick on farmers and local population of villages and towns. They are solitary creatures and live on quiet places with lots of nature, like a wood. There are many different stories about the leprechauns, it is just what you want to beleive.

At first Snarf thought it very exciting, so many ladies in the house, that means playing.
Toys were brought out by him and laid at the feet, without result. The ladies were too busy talking to each other. Sigh......, then I just lay down and keep an eye on them.

The two organizing ladies of last and this year, friend M. and me on the kitchen steps.

On the pictures they still look a bit timid, but beleive me there was a lot of chatter, yes we are known for that.

Apart from the Primulas, all flowers came from the garden. Now there is not that much, I filled small Moroccan tea glasses with Cyclamen and Viburnum tinus.

The formal part of the meeting comes to an end. One more photo and I shall fill the wine glasses. More snacks are put on the table and Snarf is in his element. When the ladies are leaving, he has made a big mess, napkins are shredded to little pieces on the carpet. Bags are safely put away, Snarf is too curious, haha.  A shame I made no more pictures, but I'm different from other women, I cannot do more than one thing at a time.

On departure one of us came stuck in the mud of the soft shoulder, you should have seen that, shelf behind the wheel and three garden ladies pushed the car on the road again.

Now we are looking forward to start working out our new plans for the new garden club year, so exciting.

´THE GARDENER´S GARDEN´ IS BINNEN VANDAAG. - ´THE GARDENER´S GARDEN´ IS INSIDE TODAY.

Horrible weather with rain and storm today, was not  in the mood at all for writing or photographing and preferred curling up in a chair in front of the stove with a book. But Snarf lured me out, so we did a round in the garden.  Who knows something blooms, nope, the Hellebores show some colour but flowers have not yet opened, snowdrops show white tips, it will not take long. Also many buds of the Camellias are almost bursting and then I see the flowering branches of the Hamamellis 'Jelena', very nice, but in the meantime it's raining cats and dogs again and I run into the greenhouse. Even Snarf has retreated to his doggy bed in front of the fire inside. In the greenhouse is always something to mess and fumble, but on several spots it's leaking. Nevertheless I go into the house to fetch my camera, but this is disappointing.  At the middle of the day it's too dark to make pictures without flash, so most of them failed.

In the greenhouse are some selfsown Cyclamen which I put in pots before winter, they are flowering now, that looks pretty.

But not this Cyclamen, I bought this one last week in the Plantenhal in our neighbourhood for only 1 Euro. I only went to this garden store for a few bags of potting soil and of course came home with some plants.  Honestly speaking I'm not fond of the white stripes, but it was pretty enough as an addition to the greenhouse.  Now I just did a surprising discovery: when you are sniffing the plant, the flowers smell lovely. So I was also nosing my other (garden)Cyclamens, but no those have no fragrance at all.

Another catch, a beautiful greenish rose in pot, also 1 Euro.  You wonder perhaps why I buy something like that.  Firstly I never put a rose in pot in the house, you know beforehand the rose will be short-lived. Secondly I never buy a nameless rose.  This is an experiment. I immediately gave it a bigger pot and put it in the greenhouse, there it´s not warm and the best chance for survival. In spring I put her in the open ground of the greenhouse with fertilizer. I am curious whether she will grow.  In the greenhouse I have two more roses, which are growing better inside than outside, viz. ´Schwarze Madonna´ and ´Black Baccara´, they are doing very well.

Jasmijn (Jasminum polyanthum)

Clematis cirrhosa ´Freckles´

Inside in the conservatory I have some promising  bulbs in pots and glasses and my first sowings, of which the rocket is already visible.

Our neighbour gave us this Phalaenopsis for the new year.

´The Gardener´s Garden´ is met recht binnen vandaag!

´The Gardener´s Garden´ is indeed inside today!

During one of our visits to flower island Madeira F. and I discovered a wonderful plant with huge flowers. We had never seen this plant before and once at home I immediately  consulted my books about plants to find out, haha, it was in 2002 and we had not yet internet. We came to the conclusion that the same plant appears under different names:  Solandra grandiflora, Solandra nitida, Solandra guttata, Solandra hartwegii or Solandra maxima.
Then we wondered whether this plant would be for sale in our country. And yes, we found the Solandra at a nursery for exotic plants not far from our place. We returned home with an unsightly looking speciman consisting of a stem of a few meters long.  We got the hint to keep temperature at least at 15 degr.C.  They also told us that it would be difficult to get flowers in the Solandra in our climate.  Because we kept our greenhouse only frostfree, we decided to put the plant in the conservatory.
After winter we moved him to the greenhouse where he started to grow to enormous proportions.
To be sure, we also took a few cuttings.  In autumn the plant was too big to move back to the conservatory, so we tried to overwinter the Solandra in the greenhouse.  We put one cutting in the conservatory. The plant in de greenhouse did not survive the winter, but the cutting in the conservatory survived and grew but did not form buds.

I almost hung my head until a few years later a miracle happened: The Solandra budded. The flowers were wonderful.  the ends of the flower petals were curling out beautifully within an hour and after another hour the conservatory was filled with a soft sweet fragrance.
The flowers of the Solandra grandiflora are 20 cm. long and have a diameter of 14 cm.  Over a few months 40 flower buds were formed and they all opened wonderfully.

Meanwhile we are several years away and the Solandra is no longer there.  The conservatory changed in a jungle, the plant suffered of various kind of aphids and had to move back to the greenhouse, where it finally kicked the bucket during a severe winter.
But it was fun to try with the ultimate success, and fortunately we have the pictures yet.......
